After The Lo Down spotted this typo to warn drivers about school students in the area—"SHCOOL X-NG"—on Stanton Street and the Post got its panties in a wad, the Department of Transportation fixed the glaring errors yesterday, righting the C and H in "SCHOOL" and adding an I to "X-NG". Gerunds!
School's Back: Worrisome Stanton Street Typo Fixed
"SHCOOL X-NG": Big Typo On Stanton Street
The Post is horrified that "A slew of officials have failed to report a humiliating spelling error — 'SHCOOL X-NG' — plastered on Stanton Street outside a Lower East Side high school for months." It's been on the street so long, it's on Google Maps! Also, The Lo Down was all over earlier.
LES High School Allegedly Underreporting Violence To Prevent Closure
Following the release of Mayor Bloomberg's hit list of 19 schools that "just don't do the job," it behooves the ones who survived to shape up or face the impending municipal axe. Or, cut back on reporting things that would get you there. Parents and former employees of the Lower East Side's Marta Valle High School are claiming Principal Mimi Fortunato is attempting to play down the number of violent altercations and lax attendance policy to avoid closure. "See how I get a drink?" one truant student told a Post reporter outside the school. "If there was discipline, I'd be in class."
Man Stabbed To Death In The LES, Suspect Still At Large
A fight inside a Lower East Side halfway house early Wednesday morning resulted in the stabbing of a 50-year-old man, and his murderer is still on the loose, the Daily News reports. Police "recovered a blood-spattered knife" on Attorney and Stanton streets, nearby the The Stanton House, which is on 190 Stanton. Bowery Boogie notes that a police helicopter descended upon the neighborhood, along with a "half-dozen squad cars
blocking the road between Attorney and Ridge."
Lady Gaga and Anderson Cooper Wreak Havoc On LES
It's been a glorious two months since we last posted about Lady Gaga (what was in that casserole dish, anyway?)—but now that she's got a new album coming out, the Fame Monster has hurled herself back into the spotlight. In fact, right now she is on the Lower East Side with CNN's Anderson Cooper! According to EV Grieve (via), the two were strolling down Stanton Street (her former stomping grounds), and may have broken into her old apartment building at 176 Stanton. Or something! Here's what we know:
LES Shooting: Three People Injured On Stanton Street
Around 9 p.m., three people were shot on Stanton Street near Attorney Street. None of the injuries seem to be life-threatening and the victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital. According to WABC 7, "One victim was shot in the shoulder, one in the chest and the last in the stomach. Police are looking for at least one man who fled the scene."
Lady Gaga Distracts From Scandal With A Meat Dress
Lady Gaga seems to be "LA LA LA I can't hear you"-ing her way out of her latest scandal—in which she may have stolen her identity from a now-deceased musician she co-wrote songs with. Everything seemed like business-as-usual last night at the VMAs, but the pop star shut down her fan message board following the aforementioned scandal breaking, in what seems like an effort to place a gag order on her monster minions and anyone else she has power over. Anyway, it's nothing a little meat dress won't distract from!
Fatal Lower East Side Shooting Leaves Teen Dead
