The following post is from our advertiser, Focus Features. Pirate Radio is the newest ensemble comedy from filmmaker Richard Curtis (screenwriter of Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill, and writer/director of Love Actually). This high-spirited film tells the story of 8 DJs whose love affair with Rock n Roll changed the world forever. In the 1960s a group of rogue DJs, on a boat in the middle of the Northern Atlantic, played rock records and broke the law all for the love of music. The songs they played united and defined an entire generation and drove the British government crazy. The band of rebels is lead by The Count, played by Academy Award Winner Philip Seymour Hoffman. Pirate Radio also stars Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost, Kenneth Branagh, and Tom Sturridge, and features an unbelievable selection of music including The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, Cream, and The Beach Boys, just to name a few. The following post is from our advertiser, 500 Days of Summer. This is a story of boy meets girl, begins the wry, probing narrator of 500 Days of Summer, and with that the film takes off at breakneck speed into a funny, true-to-life and unique dissection of the unruly and unpredictable year-and-a-half of one young man’s no-holds-barred love affair. Tom, the boy, still believes, even in this cynical modern world, in the notion of a transforming, cosmically destined, lightning-strikes-once kind of love. Summer, the girl, doesn’t. Not at all. But that doesn’t stop Tom from going after her, again and again, like a modern Don Quixote, with all his might and courage. Suddenly, Tom is in love not just with a lovely, witty, intelligent woman - not that he minds any of that — but with the very idea of Summer, the very idea of a love that still has the power to shock the heart and stop the world. Fox Searchlight Pictures presents 500 Days of Summer, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. In select theaters July 17. Sponsored Post: Away We Go, From Director Sam Mendes

The following post is from our advertiser, Focus Features. Exploring the comedic twists and emotional turns in one couple’s journey across contemporary America, Away We Go is the new movie from Academy Award-winning director Sam Mendes, from the first original screenplay by novelists Dave Eggers & Vendela Vida, and featuring music by singer/songwriter Alexi Murdoch.

2009_06_awgsp.jpg
Longtime (and now thirtysomething) couple Burt (John Krasinski) and Verona (Maya Rudolph) are going to have a baby. The pregnancy progresses smoothly, but six months in, the pair is put off and put out by the cavalierly delivered news from Burt’s parents Jerry and Gloria (Jeff Daniels and Catherine O’Hara) that the eccentric elder Farlanders are moving out of Colorado - thereby eliminating the expectant couple’s main reason for living there. So, where, and among whom of those closest to them, might Burt and Verona best put down roots to raise their impending bundle of joy? The couple embarks on an ambitious itinerary to visit friends and family, and to evaluate cities. Their journey takes them across the country as they visit friends and family before realizing that they must define home on their own terms. Away We Go opens today at the AMC Lincoln Square and the Regal Union Square and in additional theaters on Friday, 6/12.

Sponsored Post: April 28 Public Hearing to End Tax on Freelancers

2009_04_freelancerssp.jpg
Council Member David Yassky has called a City Council public hearing for April 28th on exempting freelancers from the Unincorporated Business Tax (UBT). Since the event is open to the public, the membership and advocacy organization Freelancers Union is inviting all freelancers and independent workers to show up and send a clear message to City and State leaders. Freelancers are encouraged to show up at 250 Broadway (across from City Hall), the 14th floor Hearing Room, at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, where volunteers and Freelancers Union staff will greet them. You can let the Freelancers Union know you’re planning to be there by signing up here. The UBT taxes the same individual's earnings as both business and personal income. It drains millions of dollars a year from the pockets of self-employed workers, who comprise one of the largest segments of job growth in the city. The UBT was originally designed to catch corporate tax dodgers, not the self-employed. But despite the law’s good intentions, big businesses still escape through loopholes while thousands of NYC freelancers are unfairly penalized.

Has anyone else noticed these ads for WhatIsTheNewBlack.tv popping up all over town? From the URL, we're guessing it's a new TV show. And the site it links to lets you play dress up with a cute model, so we're betting the show has something to do with fashion. Any other clues? Email them to us at tips@gothamist.com.

2009_04_freelancerssp.jpg
The Unincorporated Business Tax (UBT) is an unfair double tax on New York City’s freelancers, taxing the same individual's earnings as both business and personal income. It’s an unfair, imprecise tax that needs to be completely overhauled so it can work as it was originally intended. On April 28th, the New York City Council will hold a public hearing on exempting freelancers from the UBT. By packing the room, we’ll send a clear message to City and State leaders: END THE DOUBLE TAX ON FREELANCERS. Click here to learn more.

But then one day she meets Veronica-a young, fair-skinned, flame-haired East Village beauty with a love of all things vintage and a penchant for falling in love with the wrong men-and suddenly it becomes clear to Lil that she’s been given a chance at redemption.
