Orthodox Lawyer Suspended After Lying About Anti-Semitism

Orthodox Lawyer Suspended After Lying About Anti-Semitism

Injecting anti-semitism into a traffic stop didn't work too well for Mel Gibson, and one Queens lawyer who pulled a "reverse Gibson" on a New Jersey state trooper has been suspended from practicing law. Elliot Dear, an orthodox Jew, was pulled over for driving 84 mph in a 55 zone in 2007. The Post reports that several days later, Dear sent the traffic court a letter claiming that the trooper called him a "Jew kike," and said "this prejudice obviously was the cause for the ticket." But Dear didn't expect the conversation to be recorded. more ›

"I heard two blowing horns and tires screeching simultaneously, then I heard a huge smash," another witness tells the Daily News. Sanitation workers helped Strauss flee from the wreckage despite a broken leg, and the driver of the minivan was in stable condition at Bellevue. more ›

NYC's Very First "Neighborhood Slow Zone" Open For Molasses

NYC's Very First "Neighborhood Slow Zone" Open For Molasses

The Claremont neighborhood of the Bronx has become the first neighborhood in NYC to be transformed into an idyllic "Slow Zone" by the DOT. While the department already has many 20 mph reduced speed zones on streets around schools, the Claremont slow zone is the first to cover a large swath of a neighborhood, with "gateway" signs that clearly indicate the entrance of the slow zone, and 28 new signs marking the 20 mph speed limit in and around the zone. And the zone itself is "self-enforcing," because the quarter-square-mile area comes complete with 14 speed bumps that will force maniac drivers to take it easy. more ›

Proposed Law: Catch Drivers Going 5 MPH Over Speed Limit

Did you know that a Staten Island Assemblyman co-sponsored legislation that would have cameras capture drivers who go 5 miles over the speed limit? According to the State Island Advance, "Violators convicted of traveling between five and 10 miles per hour more than the posted speed limit will be charged a $50 fine. Driving between 10 and 30 mph above the limit will result in a $75 fine that doubles to $150 for speeders who exceed 30 mph." more ›

Bloomberg: Publish Names Of Speeders, Have Red-Light Cameras At Every Corner

Bloomberg: Publish Names Of Speeders, Have Red-Light Cameras At Every Corner

Red-light cameras at every intersection? Mayor Bloomberg, already a fan of the nanny state, wouldn't mind! At yesterday's press conference about all the filming going on in the city Hizzoner was asked about the push to bring more of the cash-cow cameras to town and he took the idea one step further: "I think we should have them on every corner if we could," he said. "Using technology instead of having cops makes a lot of sense, and something, because of the economics, that we really have to do, and it does show that they are very effective." Oh, and also? He'd also like to print the name of speeders in the newspaper. more ›

The Land Rover SUV carrying 7 people that flew off the FDR and onto a taxi cab at E. 23rd street in Kips Bay may have been "doing about 112 mph." According to the Daily News' police sources, the driver was speeding and lost control, sending the vehicle over the elevated roadway and onto cabbie Atif Raza, who has only been driving a taxi for three months. "I couldn't believe it," a witness tells the paper, "I was actually seeing a car come off the divider and flip. It was flying." All eight people involved in the accident were injured, but only two critically, and one woman even "walked away" from the wreckage. more ›

NYC's "Scary" New Skeleton "Slow Down" Signs Target Speeders, Deadheads

NYC's "Scary" New Skeleton "Slow Down" Signs Target Speeders, Deadheads

Drivers clocked going over 30 mph as they zoom past the city's new digital "Slow Down" signs will soon get an added bonus: a skeleton image, intended to remind them of the potential consequences of speeding. It's a good start, but couldn't the DOT at least give the skeleton a top hat, or throw some dancing bears on there? We guess we'll take what we can get. The signs are intended to reduce speeding, and NY1 asserts that "one way to slow down traffic is simply to give more tickets, but Mayor Bloomberg said today that because of the city's tight budget, that's not going to happen." Besides, the NYPD is already maxed out ticketing all these speeding cyclists. more ›

Cops Apologize For Ticketing 9 Out Of 10 Central Park Cyclists

Cops Apologize For Ticketing 9 Out Of 10 Central Park Cyclists

In a shocking turn of events on par with the fall of the Berlin Wall or the Black Eyed Peas' popularity, the NYPD went to the homes of cyclists last night and apologized for handing out speeding tickets early yesterday morning in Central Park (video). Yes, we have confirmed at this hour that cops have personally apologized to bicycle riders. Let's just let that sink in a minute... Getting a little misty-eyed over here! Okay, now back to reality: The NYPD apology was not for ticketing "speeding" cyclists per se, but for "erroneously" ticketing cyclists. Nine out of ten cyclists have had their tickets voided, but a tenth cyclist still faces a $275 speeding ticket because he was busted "correctly." more ›

DOT Cutting Speed Limit to 20 MPH in 75 New Zones

DOT Cutting Speed Limit to 20 MPH in 75 New Zones

The Department of Transportation is greatly expanding the number of reduced speed zones around the city, and Boerum Hill wants to get in on the slowdown. This year, the department will triple its 20 mph reduced speed zones around schools, and is also trying out a pilot 20 mph zone program that would slow traffic on an area-wide, rather than individual street, basis. The plan calls for at least 75 reduced speed zones, if a pilot zone in the Bronx is deemed a success. CBS 2 reports that in Boerum Hill, community leaders are already calling for the DOT to include them. more ›

However, the SUV—a Range Rover—may have been traveling at a very fast speed. One witness told the News, "[The driver] was turning the corner. He had to be doing 60. NJ Attorney General Ticketed for Speeding

NJ Attorney General Ticketed for Speeding

NJ Attorney General Anne Milgram was issued a ticket for driving 69 mph in a 50 mph zone on Route 1 in New Brunswick. Milgram, in a 1994 Honda, didn't identify herself as AG and the officer only realized who she was when he returned to the department. Milgram won't fight the $176 fine (also 4 points on her license), "I made a mistake and know what I did was wrong. I take responsibility for driving too fast." (When her boss--NJ Governor Jon Corzine--was critically injured in his speeding state trooper-driven SUV, Corzine paid a fine for not wearing a seat belt.) The Star-Ledger noted that Senate President Richard Codey said, "The fact that the attorney general drives a '94 Honda proves without question she is a woman of great integrity and frugality." more ›
