Dudes, isn't it frustrating when you're macking on some foxy lady and then suddenly the conversation turns to art. And you're like, uh, The Gates were okay, but I wasn't feeling that giant flower puppy. Help is on the way! Instead of pounding Corona in a sombrero on Cinco de Mayo, one Brooke Mellen, who does the Dating is an Art blog and holds an MFA in arts administration, will teach you the basics on how to meet artsy women. Note that we're not just talking about artists, but artsy ladies—a term which encompasses a much broader field of candidates; from the quirky, bespectacled young dilettantes; to the utterly gorgeous gallery assistants; to the cougar gallery owners. For just $75, Mellen will teach you where "to meet quality, artsy women," how to "behave" at an arts event, and "where to buy affordable art for your apartment that appeals to women." The one hour tutorial will be followed by an hour of speed dating with actual artsy women! And it's all over by 9 p.m., so if you strike out there's still time to hit Coyote Ugly for Cuervo shots. Details.

Smiths and Singles in Greenpoint Fit Like Hand in Glove
"Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now," the Smiths-themed speed dating event, had its fourth monthly installment at Greenpoint's Black Rabbit bar last night. And with just about every table in the place filled with daters, it's safe to say that the ironic brainchild of comedian Dave Hill may have transcended gimmick status and become something of a minor phenomenon. (When we say ironic, it's not due to involvement of hipsters, but rather the event drawing its inspiration from Morrissey, at one time the most famous self-proclaimed asexual.)
Single Smiths Fans of the World Unite...in Brooklyn
Are any New York-based Morrissey fans less miserable now? Last night a Smiths speed dating event went down in Greenpoint, and NY Mag tossed themselves into the mix of single Moz fans. Sadly, but appropriately, it was as awkward as one might expect— this charming man reports back: "Among the single souls who turned up hoping to use mildly suicidal rock music as a basis for true love was your Intel correspondent's ex-girlfriend. Along with every other single girl in Brooklyn." It turns out too many women showed, throwing off the gender balance and forcing host Dave Hill to announce that "we have to close the registration to women.” which even meant “The girl with the Smiths tattoos got turned away”. Le sigh. Perhaps band-themed speed dating should be reserved for more upbeat groups like They Might Be Giants.
Older Gals With Means Try to Get Into Young Dudes' Jeans
Jeremy Abelson, founder of the luxury lifestyle newsletter Pocket Change, struck a publicity goldmine last February when his company sponsored a speed dating event that matched affluent men of any age with attractive young women of any I.Q. Called “Natural Selection Speed Date: Rich Guys & Hot Girls,” the event drew hate mail from women objecting to the crass, misogynistic nature of this “exercise in eugenics.”
