Today is Memorial Day, the federal holiday where U.S. men and women who have died in military service are remembered. Federal and state offices are closed, as well as post offices, schools, financial markets, and banks. The subways and buses are running on a Sunday schedule; Metro-North is on a Sunday schedule while the LIRR is on a holiday schedule; and the PATH is on weekend schedule. Mayor Bloomberg marched in two parades in......

After the U.S.S. Intrepid was towed (and stuck in the mud for a spell) late last year for much-needed repairs, Manhattan's west side waterfront hasn't been the same. So we welcomed this story about the Intrepid heading to land in Bayonne, NJ for the next phase of its repairs. This will be the first time the aircraft carrier has been on dry land in over 30 years, and the president of the Intrepid Air, Sea......

Austinist gets arty with an interactive guide to SXSW, loved some local art galleries and a new art exhibit and lamented the possible loss of "Friday Night Lights" production to New Mexico. Bostonist was happy they finally found an Anna Nicole Smith connection to their fair city and that an Apple Store was opening up. They were less happy that new rules have been established limiting underage shows and that their Governor spending a lot......

If at first you don't succeed... dig a big trench and wait for the next high tide. Bill White, president of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum announced yesterday that the Intrepid aircraft carrier is scheduled to be moved to Bayonne next Tuesday. The first attempt to move the ship on November 6th ended after only a few feet of movement as the 36,000 ton carrier's propellers got stuck in the mud. The......

Last Monday, after months of planning, tugboats attempted to move the USS Intrepid from Pier 86 on Manhattan's West Side to Bayonne, NJ for repairs. Unfortunately, the aircraft carrier's propellers were partially stuck in the mud and couldn't be budged. But now the Navy is coming to the rescue, agreeing to send a salvage team to dredge Intrepid and have it moved within three weeks. Apparently there were appeals from many levels of New York......

The Intrepid Air & Space Museum will be moved from its Manhattan pier to Bayonne for repair work tomorrow. Well, it'll head to Jersey if it can even move. The Daily News reports that even though more than "16,000 cubic yards of mud have been dredged from the Hudson and 500 tons of water released from the ballast tanks to lift the ship just 2 feet off the Hudson floor," one part of the aircraft......

Today's Times brings up an intersesting question: What happens when a floating military museum needs to get touched up and repaired? The answer it seems, at least in the case of the U.S.S. Intrepid, which has been sitting at a dock on the West Side of Manhattan for over twenty years, is a mystery wrapped in secrecy: sometime in the next several months, the 900-foot-long leviathan, with a collection of jets and helicopters strapped......

Let's step away from some of the more popular sports for a second. Move aside basketball and your NCAA Tournament. Take a chill pill baseball with your World Baseball Classic and Spring Training. Yesterday the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum hosted the Big Apple Grapple, which featuring the some of the world's best male and female arm wrestlers. All battling for NYC's King and Queen of Arms. Unfortunately, there are no results online for this scintillating display......

The Parks Department is wondering what to do with the New York Pavilion from the 1964-65 World's Fair, including those 250-foot towers, you see when driving in Queens (okay, sitting in a car, bus, or airport shuttle). The Post reports that the Parks Department is asking developers for their ideas to revive that part of Flushing Corona Park. The towers themselves are crumbling and many of the inside features are rusted through and useless, though......

The arrival of the Queen Mary 2 yesterday awed and excited New Yorkers, with thrilling moments like when the biggest ship ever (so far) plugged along under the Verranzano Narrows Bridge and passed the Statue of Liberty. The Post put the ship's size into perspective - it's "86 feet longer than the Chrysler Building is tall." Holy. New Yorkers oohed and aahed over a spectacle not seen since the decline of transatlantic boat travel. An......

A Concorde has finally landed at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum on the Hudson River. With the retirement of the supersonic jets, Concorde decided to donate one to the Intrepid and that jet was moved to the museum today. All the morning news shows cut to the sight of the plane traveling via barge along the water. The Times article has a link to aviation reporter Edward Wong's multimedia essay about the Concorde's Last Flight.......
