South Slope Gets A New Watering Hole With Mary's Bar

Brooklyn has lots of bars, sure, but what's one more? Especially one in the South Slope with a strong pedigree (one of the partners was a general manager at Employees Only), a restored original tin ceiling and a whole slew of wines, cocktails and beers. Everyone, give a hearty hello to Mary's Bar, which recently opened on 22nd Street and Fifth Avenue. more ›

Cops Release 3rd Sketch Of Brooklyn Rapist, "Two, Maybe Three" Suspects At Large

Police have released a third sketch of a man who they are seeking in a torrent of sexual assaults that have occurred in Park Slope, Sunset Park, and Bay Ridge since April of this year. This sketch comes from the account of a victim in Sunset Park on September 4. "Now we believe there are two, maybe three individuals involved," Deputy Inspector Paul Pintos tells the Brooklyn Paper. If you're an object without a knit, well, you are doing it wrong. Seriously, what isn't getting knit these days? Back in 2009 the crafty Knitta Please crew adorned parking meters in Brooklyn Heights with some colorful custom pieces, then Olek raised the bar with some knit bikes, and more recently outdid herself by creating a custom knit for the Wall Street bull. Freddy's Bar to Reopen February 4th

The beloved old Prospect Heights dive Freddy's Bar & Backroom, a Prohibition-era bar that became an unofficial headquarters for the anti-Atlantic Yards protests, has announced that it will reopen on February 4th at its Brooklyn new location on 5th Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets. A few of Freddy’s former employees have taken the reins, and they declare that although it's not the old Freddy's, many items "did make the long journey from demolition to re-birth, including the original prohibition era red mahogany bar, the old booths and tables, and a few special items as well." They also tell us the bar is environmentally friendly: more ›

Photos: Big Three Alarm Fire Smokes Out Park Slope

[UPDATE BELOW] Local resident Mina Hochberg sent us these photos of a fire that tore through the Associated Grocery Store and the apartments above it at 17th Street and 5th Avenue in Park Slope today around 12:45. The FDNY tells us it's a three alarm fire, and so far one firefighter has sustained minor injuries. It's unclear if anyone else was hurt, or what caused it, and as of 4:15 it wasn't completely out. An FDNY spokesman told us the incident is "ongoing" and suggested we call back in a little bit. When asked how long "a little bit" is, the spokesman replied, "I can't tell you when the fire is going to stop." more ›

Dogs Have Nowhere to Run to in Park Slope

Dogs Have Nowhere to Run to in Park Slope

The dog owners of the outer boroughs have oddly always seemed to have less outdoor space for their canines than those in Manhattan; or maybe they just speak up about it more. Either way, the Brooklyn Paper reports that dog owners of the South Slope "have commandeered a small park near the Prospect Expressway for a dog run" and are now angling to make it official. more ›
