Fall is ending on a warm and rainy note. As expected a warm front has moved across the city this morning, bringing widespread clouds, fog, and light rain. The temperature is going to hover in the mid and upper 50s all day. Expect delays if you're flying somewhere today. There's plenty of fog all along the East Coast, the Great Plains and Rockies are getting socked with snow, and Los Angeles will be in for a round of Santa Ana winds. For your Saturnalian pleasure there's a slight chance of thunder and a good chance for gusty winds as a cold front arrives around the time of tonight's winter solstice.
Winter Solstice, Sans Winter Weather, Arrives Tonight
Winter Solstice Arrives
Are you ready for a second straight week of cold weather? Daily temperatures have been running about eight degrees below normal since last Monday. Cold, blustery weather will be around for a few more days thanks to a storm that's way out to sea and and approaching high pressure system. As the high moves eastward and gets closer to the Atlantic storm we will see a brisk north wind develop today and tomorrow. Highs today and tomorrow will be in the mid 30s with lows in the mid 20s, both under clear skies.
The Summer Solstice Was Yesterday
Yesterday was the longest day of the year, and it seems most New Yorkers just went along their business. Except some Wiccans who gathered in the East Village, who held a "hush-hush" event for "people in the coven."
Winter to Start Warm and Rainy
On Wednesday, much to our regret, we cavalierly dismissed the Weather Channel's call for a chilly Friday. We much preferred the National Weather Service forecast at the time.
