Thief Nabbed After Targeting Soho Apple Store Customers

Apple items are really hot: Police arrested a man who "would allegedly stalk his victims as they left the [Apple] store on Prince Street, assault and rob them, and then pawn the stolen merchandise," according to the Post. In one instance, Dwyane Stewart came up behind a business executive, pushed a "hard object" into his back and threatened, "Don't do nothing stupid," before taking his computer. Stewart robbed three people, pawning the items at an electronics store: "He was nabbed after a person who had unwittingly bought one of the hot computers took it in for service at an Apple Store. A worker there looked up its registration number and discovered it had been reported stolen." The computer was traced back to the store and then to Stewart. Stewart admitted to the robberies and is being held on $50,000 bail.

EVENT: We're sponsoring, and our publisher is hosting, the NYC Photobloggers event tonight. Come over to the Apple Store to see a dazzling display of digital images and the faces behind the photos: Eliot Shepard, Jay Parkinson (yes, that Jay Parkinson) and a whole lot more will be on hand. There will also be a special presentation by Jen Bekman of 20x200, Hey Hot Shot, and the Jen Bekman Gallery and an after party at Merc Bar.

at 9 pm.

It's the day for the Apple iPhone to be released to the public, and the public is doing its job to feed into the media frenzy. If you're not on line waiting for the iPhone, you've either seen people waiting on line or mocked people waiting on line (while secretly coveting one, of course). WCBS has some photographs of people on line this morning - someone even brought his dog, which is named Beta! David Clayman, second in line, has been blogging about his waiting at iPhone Adventure. And earlier this week, on the luck of seven interviewed the person at the head of the line, Greg Packer, and Clayman - here's the video.

EVENT: Tonight at the Apple Store, the NYC photobloggers get together again. Come check out: Scott Heiferman, Kara Canal, Rebecca Smeyne, Will Sherman, Kamau Mucoki, Boogie and Martin Fuchs.

EVENT: Every time a new song by Madonna, Bloc Party or...anyone really, come sout - it's pretty safe to say it'll be remixed within a week. Tonight DJ Spooky discusses the art of the remix at the Apple Store. All you need is a little imagination, some knowledge of modern sampling and production techniques and, of course, a Mac.

EVENT: NYC Photobloggers will take over the Apple Store again tonight, for the 7th of their events there. The A-list...um, list, of past photographers is a long one. Six more will join the ranks tonight, as they are the centerpieces for this event. They are:

What's the nerdiest place you've met someone? Or have you been approached at the Apple Store? Gothamist tends to get lost wondering about the engineering involved to have a floating glass floor, so we're sort of oblivious to the whole scene. And for our non-NYC readers, is this the case at other Apple Stores?

Hello, everybody. We've had a couple of exciting months, launching SFist and DCist as well as growing our staff, and have a busy fall/winter planned as well:

Various personalities of the blogging world will collide at the NY Bloggers talk at the SoHo Apple Store this Monday, May 3. See Buzzmachine's Jeff Jarvis moderate/referee a discussion with web publishers Nick Denton and Jason Calacanis. ftrain's Paul Ford chats with Meg Hourihan, Anil Dash, and Jason Kottke about technology. And Felix Salmon will find out what kinds of medication Choire Sicha, Lockhart Steele, and Jen Chung must be on during the editors panel. Plus, Jake will be running around as the water boy. We can also promise question-and-answer time as well as some surprises. All in all, a great opportunity to see the bloggers you love (to hate?). Be there to be square.

It was a great night at the SoHo Apple Store last night, with the NYC Photobloggers Exhibition. Not only did we get to see the photographs of clarsen, slower, Bluejake, Laura Holder (above), Infrangible, rion.nu, Satan's Laundromat, 990000, and lightningfield, we also got to more about their respective starts, processes, and favorite subjects - a nice sampling of different outlooks on photoblogging. Additionally, Anil spoke about Six Apart's Typepad (and demonstrated its moblog potential by creating one of the evening) and Adam and Scott explained the beauty of fotolog.net and its community building aspects. Thanks, photobloggers and friends!

Gothamist loved this photograph from Rion Nakaya's rion.nu because it reminded us of one of our favorite films, but there are other fabulous photographs to be found on the site. Rion and other photobloggers will be speaking at the New York City Photobloggers Exhibition, on Thursday, February 26, SoHo Apple Store.

From the photographic stylings of Laura Holder, whose two sites, lauraholder.com and fotolog laura titian, keep Gothamist busy. Laura and other area photobloggers will speaking at the New York City Photobloggers Exhibition, on Thursday, February 26, SoHo Apple Store.

A picture of alma mater from Jake Dobkin's photoblog, Bluejake. Jake will join other photobloggers in speaking and showing their photographs at the New York City Photobloggers Exhibition, on Thursday, February 26, SoHo Apple Store.

A beautiful photograph from Eliot Shepard's slower of the Brooklyn Army Terminal. Eliot and other photobloggers will be speaking at the New York City Photobloggers Exhibition, on Thursday, February 26, SoHo Apple Store.

More about the iPod mini.

To get ready for the New York City Photobloggers Exhibition at the SoHo Apple Store next Thursday, February 26, Gothamist will bring you a photograph of each one of the photobloggers until the talk which will include presentation from Six Apart and fotolog.net. Today's photoblogger is David Gallagher of lightningfield, with a picture from inside the Time Warner Center.

SoHo retail real estate is very hit or miss these days, according to the Times and gives further credence to my position that SoHo is just missing the glass atrium to be a mall:
