Since opening over the summer, Delicatessen, that trendy restaurant-bar-lounge-tool magnet has been pissed on, robbed, and threatened by neighbors furious about the hotspot's cacophony. Now the Observer has piled on too, declaring it "undeniably the city’s most loathed new restaurant in 2008." Even if you know you hate the place already, it's a fun read, detailing how owner Mark Thomas Amadei, 35, installed Delicatessen in the space formerly occupied by the humble Buffa’s Coffee Shop,......

The new bike lane on Grand Street that a local shop owner recently called the possible "demise of Little Italy" continues to draw attention with complaints that fire trucks are struggling to maneuver around the new setup of the block. Ernest Lepore, owner of Ferrara Cafe who originally talked to Villager, appears to have taken his case against the lane to the Post, telling the paper, "I saw one truck back up four or five......

This is Greenhouse, a new 6,000 square foot, bi-level club that opened last week in Soho in the former Club Shelter space. As the name suggests, they're working the eco-friendly angle here with (deep breath) high-efficiency heating, an LED lighting system, fabrics made from recycled materials, bamboo floor and wall coverings, and furniture made with FSC wood. Owner Jon Bakhshi, who is applying for LEED certification, tells the Times he spent at least 33 percent......

A reader sent us some cameraphone photos and wrote:I was in my apartment when I heard something that sounded like a 13-car pile up. After going outside I saw a crazy scene. According to eyewitnesses someone stole a van around Bleecker St, drove down Macdougal and then into the park where Prince St/MacDougal St/6th Ave meet. He hit a woman, smashed into a store display, then smashed into a Smart Car (which sent it flying......

Ohio has officially arrived in New York! This summer Mayor Bloomberg announced that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would open an Annex in SoHo, officially extending the Cleveland museum all the way to Manhattan. This week the 76 Mercer Street location officially opened to the tune of $9 million. ArtInfo reports that the "25,000-square-foot basement space, focuses on New York rock culture, with a special gallery devoted to local musicians and temporary exhibitions......

The new bike lane that extends along Grand Street between Varick and Chrystie Streets has been warmly received by many cyclists who like the way it's separated from traffic by a row of parked cars. Not so pleased are business owners through Soho, Little Italy and Chinatown, some of whom fear the bike lane will "hurt business and create a dangerous situation," according to The Villager. Ernest Lepore, owner of Ferrara Little Italy, says, "Last......

Last night the City Winery opened its slightly unfinished doors to the press, revealing New York's only fully functioning winery/venue. Downstairs in a temperature-controlled room, casks of wine made on the premises were being stored...some of it for customers who had already purchased their own. (Customers like Lou Reed.) That's right, possibly the best thing about this place is that you can put your name on a barrel and come tap into it whenever you......

Last year the police were hassling the art vendors in SoHo, something documented by Robert Lederman, president of A.R.T.I.S.T. (Artists’ Response to Illegal State Tactics). Around the same time, word of an Alan Gerson-proposed bill to "deal with the problem" was getting out, and now the City Council proposal has arrived, leaving the artists on the defense. The NY Post reports that "The council last week began considering limiting the number of art vendors to......

The Chestnut Bar: Carroll Gardens neighborhood restaurant Chestnut has expanded into the space next door with a “cozy, rustic bar.” We're told it’s got exposed brick, tin ceilings, a U-shaped bar, tall snack tables made of recycled Chestnut, and a collection of antique "chestnuts" (bottles like these, from which the restaurant got its original name). Chef and co-owner Daniel Eardley is all about the farm-to-table, sustainable agriculture thing, and his $30 three-course prix fixe menu......

You'll recall that neighbors living near the revoltingly trendy Delicatessen in Soho are getting really fed up with all the obnoxious tools blathering through the night, with one man going so far as to urinate down onto the roof, which is part glass. Could this be the same scold who led a near-riot last night, according to this priceless email sent to Eater by one witness? "Some young super-angry dude storms up to the bar......

Last night (on what would have been his 68th birthday), the Openhouse Gallery in SoHo opened their exhibit "Imagine Peace," displaying over 100 of John Lennon's drawings. The installation will be around through the weekend, and it'll cost you $2 to get in, with the money going towards City Meals-on-Wheels. Featuring "Lennon’s characteristic drawings in hand-signed pieces and limited edition prints, as well as serigraphs, lithographs, copper etchings and aqua tints," some of the collection......

Banksy and his friends at Colossal Media have put up two new billboards-- one at the corner of Houston and Macdougal, the other on Canal and West Broadway. The one on Houston seems to indicate an upcoming show-- in one of the -ber months. So if you missed his blowout in LA a couple of years back, where he brought in a live elephant and painted it, and then sold a load of stuff to......

A huge Banksy mural was spotted being put up in Soho at Wooster and Grand this morning. At first it appeared that it was possibly Banksy himself painting the huge rat, but the painter's American accent quickly revealed that it was not in fact the pseudo-anonymous British graffiti artist. After initially dodging questions, the painter revealed that he was working for the sign painting company Colossal Media and was given the commission. It's expected that......

Here, pour yourself a morning cup o' contempt, courtesy Frank Bruni's review of Delicatessen (pictured), the overpriced, overcrowded Soho comfort food lounge where tools and over-privileged scenesters flock to judge each other. (You know, the place that's driving neighbors to urinate on it.) After conceding that "this seriously mediocre but ingeniously conceived restaurant" isn't catering to epicures, but rather "night crawlers looking for foodstuffs that double as alcohol sponges," Bruni decides that "many of these......

The Apple store in SoHO has become a magnet for lines, whether it's for the new iPhone or a big act performing in their intimate space. Seems the SoHo Alliance isn't happy with the company congesting its sidewalks, and the NY Sun reports that "the last straw came when thousands of teenage girls poured onto the streets en route to an in-store Jonas Brothers concert." Amongst the list of complaints were screaming teens, blocked traffic,......

Photo via Overconsume's Flickr. Someone is telling SoHo what they really think! Razor Apple reports on the "Fuck SoHo" stickers that have been popping up with more frequency in the neighborhood. They report: "Spelled out with misappropriated streetwear logos, these 'Fuck SoHo' stickers caught our eye recently, in part because we sometimes think the same thing. But who hates SoHo enough to print up stickers?" All signs point towards the Secret Society (especially this......

The Van Leeuwen Artisan ice cream truck rolled up to DUMBO for a couple hours this afternoon, affording Gothamist a taste of creamy ecstasy. And not a moment too soon; driver Dan Suarez told us that a turf war had already broken out on Main Street with rival truck Tommy’s Ice Cream, whose owner told Dan he’s been working the block for four years. One could see why Tommy would be threatened: there was an......

Yesterday, police scoured Soho for clues after a 19-year-old was sexually assaulted in her apartment building on Prince Street near Sullivan. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly confirmed the victim was followed home from the subway station by the attacker: "She was followed by an individual who asked her for a cigarette. She did give him a cigarette. She went into her residence; he followed her upstairs. He then accosted her, dragged her downstairs, and sexually......

Clearly Lafayette Street between Houston and Prince Streets isn't gritty enough when a movie production crew has to carefully spray paint tags on boarded up store. And of course the boards were applied to the former Otto Tootsi Plohound location earlier in the morning. All this hard work is for When in Rome, a comedy starring Kristen Bell (aka Veronica Mars, Sara Marshall), who told MTV, “It’s about a slightly cynical girl who has......

The cast iron facades, high ceilings, and wide-open floor plans that made the neighborhood so desirable as a place for artists, and later well-heeled residents, are rooted in SoHo's industrial past. It was a neighborhood of factories and manufacturing. That era has passed, however, and after more than a century in business, John De Lorenzo and Bro., Iron and Sheet Metal Contractor closed their shop this week. It will be converted to a building housing......

Police are looking for a man who tried to rape a woman entering her Sullivan Street apartment on Sunday morning. According to WABC 7, after the woman "opened the door to her apartment...the suspect forced his way in, pushed her onto the bed and began to choke her." Photo of Orphic Memory Sausage by Matthew Weinreb 2008, printed with permission from the artists: Mimi Oka and Doug Fitch. Lots of chefs consider their food to be art, but few artists see their art as food. A new festival called Umami – a Japanese word meaning "savory" or "meaty" – is trying to change all that. The ten day smorgasbord, which started Tuesday, spotlights artists and performers who use food as a medium, and......

The Buildings Department has partially lifted the stop work order at 246 Spring Street, aka the Trump Soho building at Spring and Varick. On January 14, a construction worker fell to his death while pouring concrete molds on the 42nd floor. A second worker also fell, but was saved by netting around the building. The DOB says workers were allowed to proceed "with interior construction and installation of curtain wall panels on the lower......
