Last Night's Action: Coming Back Home

Last Night's Action: Coming Back Home

The Yankees' offense finally woke up as they battered Detroit 10-1 to force a Game 5 showdown Thursday at the Stadium. The surprise of the year was AJ Burnett allowing only one earned run while lasting almost six innings to earn the win. Kudos should go to Curtis Granderson, who made two enormous defensive plays to keep Detroit in check. Ivan Nova will face Doug Fister with an ALCS spot on the line Thursday in the Bronx. more ›

Last Night's Action: Yanks Draw First Blood in ALDS

Last Night's Action: Yanks Draw First Blood in ALDS

They needed two nights and two starting pitchers, but the Yankees finally took Game 1 of their American League division series against the Tigers. Ivan Nova "started" the game -- it resumed in the bottom of the second after rain delayed it Friday -- and held the Tigers in check. He worked into the ninth and didn't allow a run until after he left the game. He struck out five and walked four. Robinson Cano took care of the rest, knocking in six runs. He hit a go-ahead double off the top -- very top -- of the left-field wall and then hit a grand slam in a six-run sixth. For good measure, he added an RBI double in the seventh. Brett Gardner had a key two-strike single that turned a 2-1 lead into a 4-1 advantage. The only downside? Luis Ayala struggled in relief of Rivera, and the Yankees had to turn to Mariano Rivera to throw three pitches. more ›

Last Night's Action: 601

Mariano Rivera tied Trevor Hoffman's career save record with his 601st in the Yankees 7-6 win over Toronto. Rivera's save capped a topsy-turvy game that saw the Yankees trail 6-1 before rallying for the win. A-Rod hit his 16th homer of the season, a three-run blast, to bring the Yankees within one run. Curtis Granderson launched his 40th homer of the year, a two-run shot, to put the Yankees up by the final margin. Aaron Laffey earned the win and the bullpen did a remarkable job, not allowing a hit over five innings of work. more ›

Last Night's Action: Posada Carries the Day

Jorge Posada lost his job as the regular designated hitter, but he got the start Saturday. He didn't disappoint. With a two-run single and a grand slam among his three hits, Posada accuonted for six of the Yankees' nine runs in a 9-2 win over the Rays. The Yankees, who are virtually guaranteed to make the playoffs, got six strong innings from Phil Hughes, too. They lead the Rays by 8 1/2 games in the wild-card standings and will finish the series Sunday with A.J. Burnett pitching in the stead of Freddy Garcia, who cut a finger on his pitching hand. more ›

Last Night's Action: Even Again in the AL East

Last Night's Action: Even Again in the AL East

Red Sox 10, Yankees 4: With an eight-game winning streak and sole possession of 1st place in the American League East, the Yankees handed the ball to their ace Saturday. Despite his strong season, entering Saturday, CC Sabathia was winless against his team's Boston rivals. That would remain the case, as Sabathia allowed seven runs and nine hits over six innings. It was Sabathia's fourth loss to the Red Sox this season and the seven runs allowed equals the number of runs Sabathia allowed in his previous eight starts combined. Jacoby Ellsbury had six RBI in the game, including a three-run homer in the 4th off Sabathia. The two teams meet again for sole possession of first tomorrow night. more ›

Last Night's Action: Mets Lose Beltran But Win Third Straight

Last Night's Action: Mets Lose Beltran But Win Third Straight

With Carlos Beltran reportedly en route to join the Giants, the Mets played the Reds with 24 men on Friday but still took their third straight from the Reds, 8-2. Unless the Beltran deal hits a snag, he will be sent to San Francisco in exchange for highly regarded pitching prospect Zack Wheeler, who was with Class A San Jose. Mike Pelfrey impressed with a complete game, striking out three and walking none. Lucas Duda, playing right field in Beltran's absence, had a homer for the Mets' fifth run. Much of the damage had been done before that. Angel Pagan had a two-run double in the first and Daniel Murphy—still blistering hot—had another one in the fifth. David Wright had a homer in a 2-for-4 performance. more ›

Last Night's Action: Yanks Fall in Heat

Last Night's Action: Yanks Fall in Heat

After Friday's game started with the temperature at 100 degrees, the Yankees and A's played Saturday's affair at a cool 93. Unfortunately for the Yankees, their bats didn't stay hot, and they fell, 4-3 in the middle game of a three-game set. A.J. Burnett struck out six and walked three and was chased with two outs in the sixth. He ended up allowing three runs. Derek Jeter had three hits and the Yankees, down two in the ninth, made a comeback attempt. Nick Swisher hit a home run off the facing off the upper deck in right field -- he is the first Yankee to do that -- but that only counted for one run. more ›

Last Night's Action: Series Wins

Last Night's Action: Series Wins

Old Timer's Day at Yankee Stadium is always a special occasion, but Sunday's affair seemed bigger than usual, in part because Joe Torre and Bernie Williams came back for their first Old Timer's Day. Yogi closed the introductions as usual and plenty of former stars highlighted the festivities. On the field, the Yankees overcame a 3-0 deficit to beat Colorado 6-4. Jorge Posada and Nick Swisher went deep and Mariano Rivera, who begged Michael Kay to introduce him as an old timer, showed he still has time on his side by striking out the side to earn his 20th save. more ›

Last Night's Action: Wins For Mets, Yankees, Red Bulls, Liberty

Mets 8, Pirates 1: One probably wouldn't expect it, but the only undefeated starter in the National League is on the Mets. Dillon Gee pitched 8 innings, allowing only one run, on his way to winning his 7th game this season. Gee is 5th Mets starter to reach this mark, following in the footsteps of Ron Darling, Dwight Gooden, Jason Isringhausen and Octavio Dotel (also a rookie at the time). The Mets have now won two straight and 5 of 6 in the last week. more ›

The Mets were able to score five runs (four earned) in the 7th inning, knocking Jurrjens out of the game. The rubber match takes place tomorrow night at 8pm. more ›
