The skies have been illuminated by some wondrous spectacles over the last week. First, the strongest solar flare in more than six years bombarded the Earth with radiation. And then an especially luminous aurora borealis—aka the northern lights—blanketed the skies around the world, from Norway to Alaska, in the middle of the week. Watch a video of the phenomenon from over Birtavarre, Norway below.

Neat: Average Color Of The NYC Sky Right Now
Have you ever wondered what the main color in the New York City sky is at any given moment? Well Mike Bodge is telling you every five minutes with his website that captures the average color of the sky. As we type this at 9:45 a.m., should you be gazing up and thinking, "this is the color I want to paint my walls," it's at #F3F4F3... but you might want to wait until some softer tones come into the mix.
Hurricane Earl Makes A Great Sunset
After all that fuss, Earl didn't really do much of anything in New York. Parts of Long Island suffered some street flooding and beach erosion, but the city escaped the rain and wind we'd been gearing up for all week. However, the hurricane did give us a beautiful sunset last night! The sky was lit up in pinks and oranges last night, and some of our readers captures beautiful images. If you have any photos of last night's sunset, email them to us at photos[at]gothamist[dot]com, or tag them "gothamist" on Flickr.
Street Art in the Air!
Earlier this morning Will Sherman of Animal alerted us that he spotted a C-L-O-U-D cloud in the sky, but said, "I popped inside for 5 minutes and it basically disappeared." Such is the fleeting nature of sky art. That's right, street art was taken to a higher altitude this morning by Ron English. There's no escaping it now. Enjoy!
Rainbows! Even Mother Nature Is Celebrating Gay Pride
Yesterday's brief downpour didn't result in Mammatus clouds, but it did bring a pretty rainbow. We'll take it!
Mammatus Clouds Forever: More Photos Of The Bumpy Clouds
While today's sky has been blue with fluffy (cumulus?) clouds, we're still thinking about last night's dazzling post-storm mammatus clouds. Here are some more of photographs of the clouds. Thank you to everyone who shared their pictures—we apologize that we couldn't put them all up (we did get a lot!).
Apocalyptic Sky Over New York Tonight
Whoa! Was Ghostbusters 3 filming tonight? Because those were some crazy clouds just after sunset. They appear to be a mammatus formation-- that's Latin for "bumpy clouds."
