It's hard out there for a boarder this year: there was a skateboarding groper running amok near Columbia University this summer, giving a bad name to skateboarders everywhere. In addition, boarders have been driven out of Columbus Circle and the East River Esplanade for being "hooligans." There's nowhere for these outcasts of society to practice their art anymore—except for the subway!

BMX Track, Skatepark May Get Kingsbridge Armory Tryout
We were intrigued after hearing that the Bronx's Kingsbridge Armory may be turned into a combination velodrome and BMX park, thanks to a study conducted by the NYU's Wagner School that deemed it a viable option. New York City used to be a hub for bike racing, and supporters say that an indoor bike park would encourage fitness and give young folk in the Bronx another way to stay off the streets. Michael Green of the National Cycling Association, the group that's spearheading the velodrome initiative, tells us that the group plans to get a permit from the city to open up a temporary bike track, BMX facility and skatepark in the armory, "We want to show the public how the facility will work and to get people excited about reclaiming this old, unused structure," Green says.
Video: Tillman And Norman Battle For World's Fastest Dog (But Where's The Beefy?)
Last year at this time Tillman the skateboarding dog was in town showing off his stuff on the New York City streets (the bulldog and his human hail from Southern California), and this weekend he returned to face off with his big competition: Norman the Briard (of Georgia). But where was New York's own Beefy the skateboarding bulldog? Just another example of Fox News dropping the ball. Fair and balanced, indeed.
Video: Astoria's Skateboarding Bulldog Seeks Fame, Fortune
There are quite a few skate-boarding bulldogs out there on the Internets—there is even a Guinness World Record for fastest skateboarding dog—so it can be hard to pick a favorite. But now that we know that we've got a local skateboarding pup, the decision is so much easier. Everybody give a welcoming bark (quietly if you are in the office) to Astoria's own skateboarding bulldog, Mr. Beefy!
Columbus Circle Facing Skateboarding Teen Invasion
We have a long-standing policy to stay the hell away from roving gangs of pimple-pinched teenagers. And for the most part, as long as we steer clear of places like the Cube at St. Marks and the mall at the Atlantic Center, that's been working out great for us! But these hooligans have slowly been encroaching into taxpaying citizen's spaces in Columbus Circle, with their skateboards and their eight tracks, and people are none too pleased to have to deal with these pubescent flies!
New Course Brings Hope For NYC's Skateboarding Future
This weekend's Maloof Money Cup skateboarding competition brought a new skate park to Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens. The winner of the $100,000 prize, Chris Cole, told the NY Times, “There’s a lot of different options here for kids to find a lot of fun. It’s not your standard skate spot where it’s back and forth.”
Skateboarding Dog Arrives In NYC
The famous 4-year-old English skateboarding bulldog from Southern California has arrived in NYC for the first time ever. According to the Daily News, Tillman—the world’s fastest skateboarding canine—is here for Saturday's “Bark in the Park” event, where Mets fans and their furry friends are both invited to a game.
"Best Of" Skate Park Breaks Ground Near Unisphere
Earlier this week, construction got started on a new skate park near the 1964 World's Fair site in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. The 16,000 square foot course, which is being built above the old Astral Fountain, will feature elements from around the city: "Original Brooklyn Banks 9-stair replica rail; Union Square rail/steps Police Plaza 7-stair rail/various stairs; Ziegfeld ledge; Chrystie Park ledge; Exchange Place street gap; JFK Banks; Con Ed Banks; Pyramid ledges; Flushing Meadows Park ledge-over-the-grate replica."
Nine-Year-Old Stabbed To Death Over Video Game
The nine-year-old New Jersey boy who was stabbed and killed in a Harlem housing project on Saturday was murdered over a video game, according to the Daily News. Fourth grade student Anthony Maldonado was spending the weekend with his uncle in the General Grant Houses when 25-year-old Alejandro Morales — one of his uncle's roommates — plunged a knife into the boy's chest after an altercation involving a Tony Hawk skateboarding video game, according to police.
Brooklyn Banks No Match For Bridge Construction
The city has made up its mind. Come December, the Brooklyn Banks will be boarded up and transformed into a construction area for the Brooklyn Bridge rehabilitation project, Scott Gastel, spokesperson for the city Dept. of Transportation told Downtown Express.
Brooklyn Banks Skate Park Closing
The Downtown Express reports that an area under the Brooklyn Bridge that's a popular skatepark called Brooklyn Banks (video) will probably be closing: "The city plans to use the internationally known Brooklyn Banks skate park as a staging area during the Brooklyn Bridge reconstruction, which is starting later this year and will last until 2014," according to the Parks Department. And the Department of Transportation "said the city would definitely need the space" at some point.
NYC Skate Legend Andy Kessler Dies
One of NYC's skateboarding legends, Andy Kessler, died yesterday in Montauk at the age of 49. Initial reports are stating that the cause of death was an allergic reaction to a hornet sting. In 2005, New York magazine profiled the skater and the Zoo York tribe he was a part of, just as the West Coast skaters were getting all the attention on the big screen.
Skateboarding Replaces Snowboarding at East River Park (CANCELED!)
East River Park, which hosted some gnarly snowboarders last week, was to become a winter wonderland for locals, with the excess snow creating hills primed for winter sports. Since that all melted thanks to the unseasonably warm weather, the Parks Department has just announced that from February 16th to 22nd (noon to 6 p.m.) there will be a "Vacation Skate Station" in its place. Leave your ice skates at home though, this is for skateboarding only. The week will include skateboarding programs for all levels, professional demonstrations, free skateboard rentals, ramps, raffles and giveaways, all as the East Side High School's DJ provide the tunes. Update: The Parks Dept. has now canceled the event—apparently Red Bull, who is organizing it, feels the weather will be bad this weekend.

Coan "Buddy" Nichols, Deathbowl to Downtown
Coan Nichols (aka "Buddy") and Rick Charnoski have been making movies together on 8mm film since the late 90s; their main focus being skateboarding. At some point they abandoned their New York City stomping grounds for the warmer weather of the West Coast, but the city is still the inspiration for their latest release. Deathbowl to Downtown chronicles the origin of skating in NYC and is "the first to explore skateboarding’s urban history in-depth." (View trailer here.)
NYC's Skateboarding History Gets Screentime
Deathbowl to Downtown – The Evolution of Skateboarding in New York City will be seeping into theaters starting this summer (with a national release this fall); the film is the first to explore skateboarding’s urban history in Manhattan. Tracing "skating's epochal shift from the parks and pools of the 70's, to ramp skating in the 80's, to the street ascendancy of the 1990's as seen from a New York-centric perspective," it includes footage and interviews with pioneers from the past and those still grinding today.
Skater Runs Over Wheelchair Racer in Marathon
Yesterday, as many respectfully cheered on the marathon participants, a skateboarder ran directly into a wheelchair racer in Park Slope. Was it intentional? Witnesses say it was. From this Flickr thread:He came riding in from the side and didn't even try to stop himself. As soon as he stood up, he was smirking and after the NYPD yelled at him, when he retrieved his skateboard and walked up the block towards where I was standing,...
