Just when you thought it was safe to bike and sit and fish (maybe not fish) off the new East River Esplanade, four wheeled rogues clothed in disgraceful New York puns and stubby shoes ruin the fun. DNAinfo reports that City councilmember Margaret Chin was SHOCKED to find the area rife with skateboarders. "It's really dangerous," Chin said in a hearing last week. "It's supposed to be a really tranquil place for people to sit and look at the water, but it was filled with young adults on skateboards. You need to create a place for them." Despite there being two skateparks nearby, we suppose the "tranquility" of sitting underneath the FDR is too much of a draw.
Skateboarding "Hooligans" Ruining East River Waterfront Park
Staten Island Youth: "Give Us Back Our Skate Park"
After the Parks Department gleefully destroyed Staten Island's Benjamin Soto Skate Park in front of skaters and bikers, citizens took to their community board meeting last night to protest the demolition, which the Parks Department justified by claiming that it was in "disrepair" and "dangerous to the children." Even so, what could possibly be more dangerous than a group of bored teenagers holding wooden boards affixed with heavy, metallic, bludgeoning-axles?
Skateboarders Race Manhattan For "Broadway Bomb "
Between the bull riding tournaments, Zombie protests and now this, Manhattan has been filled to the brim with bizarre events the past two days. Over 450 skaterboarding enthusiasts took over Broadway yesterday, darting past cabs and pedestrians alike for the annual "illegal" Broadway Bomb event, a skating race across Manhattan. The "world's most dangerous skateboard race" started at w 116th street by Riverside Park, and ended at the Charging Bull statue at Bowling Green. The race was started by three skaters in 2001 who challenged each other to skate the full length of Broadway to the bull, and not get killed in the process. You can see a video of yesterday's event below.
Rowdy Skateboarders in Windsor Terrace Exploit Police Precinct Gray Area
Some Windsor Terrace residents say they're fed up with the NYPD's failure to do anything about the late night cacophony from skateboarders in Bartel-Pritchard Square, at the intersection of Prospect Park West and Prospect Park Southwest. So they reached out to City Councilmember Bill de Blasio, who held a community meeting last night in an attempt to resolve the age old problem of skateboarding, adolescence, and rowdiness. Local resident Jim Rallis tells YourNabe that on the night of June 13th, the teens were so obstreperous that he called the police. When they didn’t respond quickly enough, he says, "I went down there to tell them to be quiet and one of them pulled a box−cutter out and put it against my body."
