• Yankees 6, Blue Jays 4: The Yankees used some home runs and a bloop single to beat Toronto. Alex Rodriguez hit his 32nd home run of the season and career home run number 496, but it was Andy Phillips who delivered the go-ahead runs. With two outs in the 6th inning, Phillips broke a tie game with bloop single to center, scoring Jorge Posada and Robinson Cano. The two teams combined for six home runs (Hideki Matsui, Cano, and Rodriguez for the Yankees, Troy Glaus x 2 and Alex Rios for the Jays) to score the first eight runs of the game. Yankees' starter Kei Igawa needed 115 pitches to get through 5 innings in his 4th start back in the Majors. It's the 7th win in 9 games for the Yankees.
• Padres 5, Mets 1: The Mets started a 7-game Southern California road trip with a loss to an overweight 40 year-old that pitches surprisingly well for his size and age. David Wells held the Mets to only one run in 6 innings. While the Mets only trailed by one run for most of the game, they seemed flat after their trip west, making two errors in the loss. Carlos Beltran continued to slump, going 0-4 in the game, making him 1-16 since the All-Star break. On the positive side, Jorge Sosa pitched well in his first start after returning from the DL. Things don't get any better for the Mets Tuesday when Jake Peavy takes the mound for the Padres.
• SI Yankees 6, Lake Monsters 5: The scary Lake Monsters scored 4 runs in the top of the 9th to tie the game at 5, but the Yankees scored in the bottom of the inning to slay the beast.

- Mets 4, Astros 2: We always thought that Philadelphia fans had the reputation for being the nastiest fans in the sports, but maybe not. Last night, former Astro and current Mets MVP candidate, Carlos Beltran made a game saving catch with two runners on base in the 9th inning and hurt his knee on the fence in the process. While being helped off the field, an audible group of Astros fans were actually booing Beltran. The injury was diagnosed as a bruised knee. John Maine won for the 5th straight time as the Mets reduced their magic number was reduced to 12.

- Yankees 8, Twins 1: Doing well against a potential first round opponent is never a bad thing. Unfortunately for the Yankees, they weren't facing one of the Twins' aces yesterday. Fortunately, it looks like Alex Rodriguez might be coming out of his slump. A-Rod got the Yankees off to a good start with a solo home run in the 2nd inning and later added another solo shot in the 7th. There was even a bases-loaded single in a four-run Yankee fifth inning. It was the 2nd game in a row that Rodriguez had a home run and the first time since July 1st and 2nd, good enough to earn him a curtain call. Corey Lidle pitched six shutout innings for his 3rd win as a Yankee.

- Mets 10, Rockies 5: The humidor didn't seem to be keeping the offense down in Colorado last night as the Mets rang up two home runs and David Wright's bat came back to life. TheRockies didn't help their cause with some missed opportunities in the outfield. Carlos Beltran hit his 39th home run of the season, setting a career record and later in the game batted to chants of MVP from at least one Mets fan in attendance at Coors Field. Steve Trachsel pitched six innings and allowed three runs for his 14th win of the season.

- Mets 6, Nationals 4: John Maine's scoreless inning streak surely couldn't last. Former Yankee Nick Johnson ended the streak at 26 with a home run in the 4th inning of last night's win against the Nationals. Maine's chance of winning his third game ended in the 6th inning when the Nationals scored 3 runs, chasing him from the game. The Mets scored two in the 7th to break a 4-4 tie with RBI from Jose Valentin and Michael Tucker. Billy Wagner pitched a perfect 9th inning for his 27th save of the season. And for those readers that like to place the Mets in the AL East for comparison (not sure why you would) - their 70 wins would put them atop the Yankees.

- Mets 4, Phillies 3: Since June 23rd, Tom Glavine was stuck on career win number 286, but thanks to Philly starter Jon Lieber, he was finally able to move one win closer to #300. Glavine and the Mets trailed the Phillies by two runs after one inning but took the lead in the 6th inning when Lieber threw away what should have been the third out of the inning. Prior to the error, Lieber retired 17 straight batters. Aaron Heilman pitched a perfect 8th inning and Billy Wagner picked up his 24th save.

- Yankees 14, White Sox 3: It's always encouraging when you can beat one of the best teams in baseball. Even better when you beat them comfortably. At the end of the day though, a win is a win and the Yankees remain 1.5 games behind the Red Sox for the AL East lead and only 4 games behind the White Sox for the Wild Card. Who says the Wild Card has to come out of the AL Central? In drubbing the White Sox, every yankee starter reached base

-Mets 7, Florida 6: David Wright's three-run homer helped the Mets come back and earn a split of the weekend's four-game series. They won't be tested until the playoffs, but the biggest challenge for the NL East leaders will be readjusting their starting rotation. After Pedro Martinez and Tom Glavine, question marks remain. The Mets are fortunate to have a second half and a 12-game lead to make adjustments.

- Marlins 3, Mets 2: John Maine was the tough-luck loser yesterday in the first game of yesterday's doubleheader against the Marlins. Maine allowed only 6 hits over 6 innings, but three of those hits were home runs. The Mets didn't offer up much run support in the loss, getting only 3 hits.

- Yankees 1, Devil Rays 0: What does Jaret Wright have to do to pitch more than 6 innings? Last night against Tampa Bay, Wright's pitch count was only at 91 after the 6th inning, he tied a career-high strikeout total with 10 and only allowed four hits. The Yankee bullpen kept the D-Rays hitless in the next three innings to preserve Wright's 5th victory of the season. The lone Yankee run came on a 2-out RBI by Bernie Williams in the 4th. The Yankees spoiled the Tampa debut of Jae Seo, who 2-hit the Yankees over 7 innings.

- Red Sox 9, Mets 4: The Mets had their chances against Jon Lester, loading the bases twice, but the rookie pitcher got out of the jams and the Red Sox won their 10th straight game. Alay Soler had his worst outing of the season, aided by a Lastings Milledge misplay of a fly ball into a two-run double in the fourth inning. The biggest scare for the Mets wasn't Big Papi or Manny Ramirez, but Jose Reyes bouncing off Jason Varitek's leg in the 5th inning. Luckily for the Mets, Reyes escaped without major injury. Tonight, Pedro Martinez returns to the mound in his first game against his former team.
