  • Knicks 89 Philadelphia 76ers 81: The Knicks enjoyed a team effort in defeating another struggling Eastern Conference team, the Sixers. Five players scored in the double digits, led by Jamal Crawford's 18 pounts and Zach Randolph's 16 points and 14 rebounds. Coach Isiah Thomas said, "We have good shot distribution, everyone feels part of the game, everyone gets to touch the basketball."

How many times this season are we going to say that the Knicks have hit an all time low? It seems that every couple weeks the team drops another disgraceful notch, and this weekend was the latest. No one knew how the team would react to the death of Stephon Marbury's father last week, but the sense was that they had come together as a unit out of the tragedy, and many might have thought...

Philadelphia 105 Knicks 77: On Tuesday, the Sixers fired their GM and President. On Wednesday, they lost to Boston, a team that is currently 17-2. On Friday and Saturday they swept a home-and-home against the Knicks, a team that desperately needs to start over again. It’s time Jim Dolan, if you even care anymore. It’s time Isiah Thomas, if you care about anything beyond your current job. Long ago the Garden was a magical place...

Yesterday's Knicks practice was cancelled so that the entire team could attend the funeral for Don Marbury, father of Knicks captain Stephon Marbury. Don Marbury died during the Knicks' Sunday night game. Despite being a team often criticized for lacking chemistry, they all stood together at the Coney Island Gospel Assembly on Neptune Ave. to support their point guard during his difficult time. Malik Rose spoke on behalf of the team to the 600-plus...

Bostonist knows how to party, and party it did this week! As the Red Sox played their winning Game 4 against the Colorado Rockies in the World Series, one fan composed tunes for each player on the team. Then, when the Red Sox won the World Series, fans celebrated all over town and snarfed the free tacos that Taco Bell gave the nation when Jacoby Ellsbury stole a base. Then they watched jigging Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon get his boogie on at the Red Sox Rally after the World Series. Manny Ramirez also invited them--and the entire city of Boston--to his house for drinks, but since the invitation came from the elusive Mr. Ramirez, Bostonist didn't believe him. And now we're moving on to the mother of all football games and the rise of Ghidorah on the basketball court. Beyond Red Sox news, Bostonist is honoring the passing of the late, great Robert Goulet by encouraging men to grow mustaches.

  • Sixers 92, Knicks 90: Two missed free throws by Kyle Korver, the top foul shooter in the NBA, gave the Knicks a shot at a win, but Stephon Marbury missed a three-pointer at the buzzer and his team lost for the seventh time in eight games. He had 30 points but missed 13 shots, and things have not looked this bleak for the Knicks since well before Coach Isiah Thomas received a contract extension. Maybe the Garden was too hasty on that one?
  • Bruins 4, Devils 1: Rare do you see the Devils come out flat, but that's exactly what they did at home against the Bruins. Boston is fighting for a playoff spot and New Jersey is safely ensconced, but that doesn't excuse an effort like that. The Devils let a young backup goalkeeper named Joey McDonald hold down the fort. Patrick Elias said his team "had nothing" and that "there just wasn't enough urgency on our part." That about covers it.
  • As some teams played to lose Tuesday, the Nets hardly played to win, though the game remained devoid of some star power. The Nets' Jason Kidd and Richard Jefferson joined Sixers stars Allen Iverson and Chris Webber on the bench. Well, at least Kidd and Jefferson showed up; Webber and Iverson did not get to the game on time. Vince Carter also set the single-season mark for Nets scoring.

It has come to this, Larry Brown comparing himself to Roy Rubin, a coach of the 1972-73 Sixers- the worst team in NBA history. While the Knicks will not break that record for futility, they are quickly approaching some of their own. Monday they lost 100-72 in Dallas, their tenth consecutive loss.

Saturday night was a display of tough defense and big rebounds, exactly what Larry Brown wants to see. The only problem was that the Sixers and not the Knicks were the team displaying them. Philadelphia beat New York 91-76, thoroughly dominating the defensive end.

After a sluggish start, the Nets have won 12 of 15 games, including Wednesday's win over Philadelphia. Their recent streak has established their position as an upper-tier team in their conference (they lead the Sixers in their division by four games), but one that does not quite seem ready to handle the best teams in the league. For the first of these two characteristics, they have Vince Carter to thank.

This afternoon, the Knicks will announce the hiring of NBA vagabond Larry Brown as the new coach of the Knicks. The contract pays Brown around $10 million per season. Brown is 64 and is already a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame. He has coached teams to both an NCAA title and an NBA championship, and is widely regarded (along with Phil Jackson) as the NBA's top coach.

Tonight marks the end of the NBA regular season. Depending on the results of tonight's Nets/Celtics and Cavs/Raptors games, Jason Kidd will either head off to the playoffs or...to the golf course. The Nets are tied with LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavs for the final playoff spot. The Nets own the tiebreaker, so the odds are good that the Nets will live to see another year in the postseason.

7 points in 22 seconds. That pretty much sums up the Nets' night in a 90-86 loss to the Pacers on Wednesday. 39 year-old Reggie Miller continued his 2nd half surge with 22 points and some heroic shots (including a 4-point play) to clinch a playoff spot for Indiana and push the Nets 1.5 games out of the Eastern Conference race with just 5 games to play.

Forget for a second that Isiah just added another $20 million in salaries after this year with the addition of Taylor and Rose. By trading away his only true center, and helping the Spurs beef up their frontline, the Knicks roster now consists of one point guard (two if you count Jamal Crawford), three shooting guards, two small forwards, five power forwards and Bruno Sundov. In fact, the little used Sundov is the only player on the roster taller than Tim Thomas. As Peter Vescey rightfully opined today, remember when Isiah said that getting Mohammed was they key to the three way trade that sent Keith Van Horn out and also brought in Tim Thomas. And how does this affect the playing time of Mike Sweetney?

The art of the heartbreaking defeat is reaching new heights this year in New York. And no, I'm not talking about the Yankees. Allen Iverson capped a stellar 38-point night by dishing the winning assist in a 106-105 win for the 76ers against the Knicks on Monday night. Marc Jackson added 22 for Philly, who now have a share of the Atlantic Division lead.
