Did you happen to read the NY Times City Section essay, Under the Scaffold, a No-Fight Club? The author Allan Ripp writes about a confrontation between some youngsters hanging out under the scaffolding of a building near Columbus Circle. Apparently the teens have been loitering around there regularly during the day, and one day, one of the kids gets shoved into Ripp's way while he's walking. Ripp decides to say something:
“You guys are always here, standing around, bumping into people and fooling around,” I scolded. “It’s not the place, and someone’s going to get hurt.” I’m certain I cursed as well.Continue reading "Cruising For a Bruising"
Passionate men cook great food. And Ali is one of the most passionate men you’ll ever meet. That’s all you need to know before you go to Ali’s Kabab Café in Astoria.
In all my years as a yellow cabbie, not once have I taken a fare to City Island in The Bronx. But I can’t say I’m surprised by this fact. Exactly 4,634 people live on that tiny island in Pelham Bay, so in a city of eight million it would be statistically unlikely to find one of these “clamdiggers” as they call themselves. Consequently, I had no idea which of the wall-to-wall seafood restaurants along City Island Avenue were tourist traps and which were frequented by the natives.
Since I’ve dubbed myself The Hungry Cabbie, I thought my first post as Gothamist’s outer borough food correspondent should be about a classic eating institution that absolutely every cabbie should know: New Park Pizzeria.
Last summer we were in Tokyo, and we got addicted to Japanese desserts. Most of it is made from sweet red bean paste wrapped in various kinds of dough. When we got back, we were majorly fiending for it-- total case of the dessert DTs. Luckily, we noticed that the Sunrise Market on Broome Street stocks plenty of simple wagashi-- and fairly reasonably priced at $1-$3/piece, depending on the size. If you are looking for something a little more sophisticated, check out the wagashi made by Toraya-- they've been making candy in Japan since the 1600s, and you can buy their stuff at two locations in New York.

Since I started working in technology, I've become an early adopter- digital cameras, TiVo, surround sound, WiFi, LCD screens, PDAs, robotic butlers, brain chip implants. I'm down for all that stuff. That's why it's particularly gratifying to see Amazon.com putting up an Early Adopter page to track and sell this kind of hairbrain technology to geeks like me with too much time and money on their hands.
