New York University has decided to relocate its proposed 38-story tower from the controversial location in the middle of the landmarked Silver Towers complex and will instead attempt to build the tower in the Morton Williams supermarket space on Laguardia Place. Did the intense community opposition change the school's mind? Not so much—but famed architect I.M. Pei, who designed Silver Towers, seemed to!
NYU To Move Controversial Tower Per I.M. Pei's Suggestion
Is NYU President John Sexton The New Robert Moses?
It's trite to call NYU's 2031 expansion plans "ambitious" at this point, given that the school wants to add 3 million square feet in the Village alone. The school is feeling the full opposition of Village locals and the executive director of the Greenwich Village Society of Historic Preservation says that the plan is “a little like BP saying they show respect for the environment.” We don't know if that's completely apt, but in a New York Magazine feature, there is a NYU President John Sexton/Robert Moses parallel to mull over. The center of this controversy lies at the proposed 400 foot tower on Bleecker Street, which would be lodged alongside the I.M Pei designed Silver Towers.
NYU Called A "Bully" During Meeting About Proposed Tower
As expected, NYU's neighbors did not seem very receptive to the university's plan for a 38-story tower right on Bleecker Street, near the Silver Towers during a standing room-only presentation. Residents gave measured, sometimes subjective opinions: "The biggest concern, I think, is the overbuilding in our area. We've seen the loss of greenspace, we're concerned about the height of these buildings" and "NYU is the bully in the neighborhood, NYU disregards everything the neighbors say at these meetings."
NYU's New Tower Proposal Seems "Greedy" To Neighbors
Ahead of NYU's presentation to Greenwich Village neighbors tonight, the Wall Street Journal got a hold of renderings of the 38-story tower that the school wants to build on Bleecker Street. The building, which would include housing for faculty and a hotel for visiting faculty, is part of NYU's ambitious expansion plan, NYU 2031, to increase its physical size by 40%. But critics say it'll interfere with I.M. Pei's landmarked Silver Towers.
Silver Towers Amongst Lucky 7 Landmarked Today
NYU owns the land under the complex and two of the three towers (the third is a moderate-income housing complex for neighborhood residents NYU was required to build). [The University] wished to build a 40-story tower on the soon-to-be-landmarked open space north of the Picasso sculpture, blocking the public view of the art work. GVSHP adamantly opposed the plan, saying it violated the entire notion of landmarking the complex, and urged the LPC to protect the open space as part of its designation.
Crane Rigger's Fatal Fall Investigated
Yesterday, a construction worker fell 50 stories to his death at a building site at 600 West 42nd Street. The victim was identified as Anthony Esposito, 48; authorities say he was wearing a safety harness but it was not attached to anything.
