Security Guard OK After Thrown From Shoplifter's Car

Yesterday afternoon, a security guard at Staten Island chased a woman suspected of shoplifting—and tried to stop her getaway by jumping onto her Volkswagen Beetle. The Staten Island Advance reports that Tyrone Brown, 27, was "clinging to the driver's side door of her VW bug as she lurched out of the busy Forest Plaza parking lot, into oncoming traffic and was hit by another vehicle." Brown was thrown to the ground but not seriously injured, while the suspect was ejected from the car; the driver and passengers of the Mercury sedan that hit the suspect's car also suffered minor injuries. Brown said that the alleged shoplifter, who was arrested, had taken a number of $2.99 nightgowns that were displayed outside the store.

If the the tanking economy or decline in Santas and Christmas trees isn't enough to take the yuletide spirit out of your holiday shopping this year, a mall in Staten Island has found a new way to spruce itself up for the season: putting up mug shots of shoplifters. The Staten Island Mall is giving everyone a look at thieves who were caught stealing there by placing the crooks' photographs up on advertising boards throughout it. DA Daniel Donovan has developed a program that digitally mixes the images of shoplifters in with ads for shops within the mall.

Victoria's Secret bras online. George Tutaya, 41, set up eBay usernames and PayPal accounts to sell the bras, which retail between $40-80, for just $25 a pop. It's believed he got the bras from a shoplifting ring and he sold over 2,000. When police went to his home, they found another 650 bras. He is being held on $7,500 bail; a neighbor described the Tutayas as a quiet family. And Queens DA Richard Brown said, "Trafficking in stolen goods on the Internet will no more be tolerated than fencing stolen property would be anywhere else."

A Brooklyn teen was bludgeoned last night by a bodega owner who accused him of stealing from his East New York Ave. store. The 15-year-old, Bunkless Bovian, got into a confrontation that turned physical with Ahmed Solaf, the store's owner, after he was accused of shoplifting. As the two fought, Solaf picked up a hammer and struck the teen in the skull.
