Mayor Bloomberg's high-profile support for Israel's actions against Hamas—from press conferences to actually traveling to Israel—has not gone unnoticed. Yesterday, a group of protesters gathered outside City Hall to throw shoes at Bloomberg (okay, a picture of him).

After a public hearing which was full of passion and anger, the MTA's board approved its 2009 budget, which includes service cuts and a 23% increase in revenue from fare and tolls hikes. The MTA is facing a $1.2 billion budget deficit next year, and it's expected a monthly unlimited Metrocard could cost more than $100 while bus lines and subway stops are limited.

Naturally the double shoe-throwing attack that put President Bush under siege during a press conference in Iraq is a gold mine for the tabloids. The Daily News explains that when Muntather al-Zaidi threw the first shoe, he yelled, "This is a gift from the Iraqis. This is the farewell kiss, you dog!" And, casting the second shoe, Zaidi said, "This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq."

    

In the twilight of his presidency, President Bush made a surprise trip to Iraq today--and he had to deal with a journalist who threw shoes at him. Seriously. During a press conference of Iraqi Prime Minister Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Al Baghadadia reporter Muntadar al-Zaidi, seated 12 feet away, threw both his shoes--one right after the other--at President Bush while yelling "This is the end!" A shoe boutique on Long Island is causing some controversy with their Sex and the City signage. Newsday reports that Steven Dann, owner of the shop in Great Neck Plaza, is offering items seen in the movie -- shoes, belts and bags with hefty price tags reaching the $4,000 range.
