Spotted in Williamsburg: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law

It doesn't take much detective work to find out that the cast and crew of Sherlock Holmes have landed in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The film stars Robert Downey Jr., Rachel McAdams, and Jude Law, and they're all readying for their close-ups at the Marcy Avenue Armory at 355 Marcy Avenue, according to Filming in Brooklyn who notes the location is the same "where the interiors of Neville’s house were shot for I Am Legend." The NY Post even has some photographic evidence of the two male leads, and report back that "the Hollywood heavyweights were dressed in 19th-century period wear yesterday...Law sporting a distinguished mustache." The movie, which is actually set in London, is being directed by Guy Ritchie, but at least he's got the Williamsburg Bridge to separate him from his ex and A-Rod.

Walter Pertyk, the Leon Goldstein High School junior who caused a fuhrer furor when he dressed as Hitler for Halloween, held a press conference - in costume - to explain himself. The Post has the details:

"I'm not a Nazi. It's a Halloween costume," he declared. "People have taken it too seriously . . . I'm not going to go around and kill Jews or anything."

In Harlem, the guide explained that black people’s hair was different and that they all went to church in their good clothes, whereas everyone else in the city was too busy to be religious, especially the Jews. Back in midtown, she pointed out two famous “Jewish delicatessens,” the Carnegie and the Stage. “Lots of remarks about Jews and blacks,” Willard observed, “yet we haven’t even mentioned Pearl Harbor.”Sadly, there were no bloodhounds on the scene, so he could not suggest that they wear a Sherlock Holmes hat and smoke a pipe. And now Gothamist must watch Best in Show tonight.

Now that we're into November, awards season kicks off in earnest with big new releases such as

Like many others, one of Gothamist's favorite books about turn-of-the-century New York City is The Alienist by Caleb Carr. A novel about finding a cruel serial killer, The Alienist also had wall-to-wall details about what life was like in the city, with a particular grittiness that escaped film depictions. And we always liked how Carr would discuss in interviews that while people fret and worry about New York being crime-ridden, the kinds of horrors happening during the turn-of-the-cenutry were even more depraved; of course, this started our Carr mini-obsession. So we were excited to see the NYT Home and Garden feature about Carr and his upstate NY house which had more details of Carr's youth in Manhattan:

He talks about his block, 14th Street between Second and Third.

While this graffiti stencil caught by callalillie captures the mystique of Detectives Goren and Eames of Law & Order: Criminal Intent, it turns out that there needs to be an addition. Chris Noth, aka Detective Mike Logan from Law & Order's first five seasons, will be a permanent cast member of Criminal Intent this fall. He and Vincent D'Onofrio will be splitting the episode load as lead detectives on the case (D'Onofrio has had some exhaustion-related absences). Gothamist is excited about Noth's return; our only request: Lose the alcohol bloat and put cucumbers on your eyes. But we're also curious if the Mike Logan character will lend itself to be as Sherlock Holmes-ish, as Goren is supposed to be. Anyway, we'll get our chance to see how Noth fares on Criminal Intent, as his guest appearance will air this weekend. Now, where's the Jerry Orbach stencil?

Law & Order
In the lives of New Yorkers, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups: the makers of Law & Order, who consistently churn out topical, interesting, and entertaining programming; and the Law & Order fans, who eagerly watch the show and its offshoots on NBC, TNT, USA, and wherever else possible. These are their stories.
