Bed Bugs Reported at Sheepshead Bay Multiplex

The New York City Health Department received an anonymous report last week about bed bugs at the UA Sheepshead Bay 14 movie theater in Brooklyn. According to the Health Department, managers have hired a pest-control company to investigate. But a spokesperson for Regal Cinemas issued a statement saying, "At Regal, the welfare of our guests and staff is of utmost importance. We have taken all reasonable measures to assure their health and safety and been advised by the environmental professionals that there exists no current health or safety risk for our guests or staff." Feel reassured?

Fisherman Meets Family He Saved From Submerged Car

Yesterday, a Sheepshead Bay fisherman was reunited with the family he saved from a sinking car. On October 10, after hearing the screams of two teen girls, Gorman jumped into the bay's cold waters to rescue their mother Alla Yelizarov, who couldn't get out of her seat belt. At the meeting, Yelizarov managed to joke, "I was just trying to park."

Fisherman Saves Three From Sinking Car In Sheepshead Bay

Last night, a woman trying to park her car somehow ended jumping a curb and sending her car—which also carried her two teen daughters—through a railing, off the pier and into Sheepshead Bay. Luckily, a fisherman and some others heard their cries and jumped into the water to save them. Keith Gorman, a deckhand at the Sea Queen 7, told the Daily News, "I heard a car smash. I ran through the crowd and I realized that a car went on the sidewalk and into the water... I took my boots off and my jacket and jumped over the rail and into the water."

DUI Driver Slams Into Brooklyn Woman Walking Home from Work

A young Brooklyn woman is in critical condition after being slammed into by a van driven by a drunk driver while she was walking out of work Thursday night. 22-year-old Ukranian immigrant Olga Skibina suffered severe brain, facial and lung injuries after being struck by the van while walking from the medical office she works as a receptionist at in Sheepshead Bay, walking along Avenue Z to her home in Gerritsen Beach.

'Low-Key' Brooklyn Marina Shooting Leaves 1 Dead, 1 Critical

What appeared to be a calm exchange among a group of four men on a boat at the Brooklyn Marina Saturday afternoon turned deadly when one of them took a gun out of his backpack and opened fire. The Post says that the men were fighting over a jet ski while standing along the Venice Marina in Sheepshead Bay, but witnesses say none of the men had even raised their voices before the shots rang out. A police source told the News, "It was low-key, like they were just shooting the breeze." The gunman first shot and wounded 37-year-old Michael Mazzara, an ex-con who has been nabbed on weapons and robbery charges. The shooter then waited out 33-year-old Paul Moghab, who dove in the water when he saw the gun. When Moghab came up for air, the gunman fatally shot hit him in the chest. Mazzara remains in critical condition after being shot in the face. The fourth man apparently hid on the boat during the incident and was unharmed. Police are looking for the shooter, who fled across the Belt Parkway, and is described as a white man in his 30s, wearing a light-colored shirt and camouflage shorts.

19-Year-Old Arrested For Killing 13-Year-Old

Yesterday, police arrested Juan Reyes, 19, in the killing of 13-year-old Miguel Saavedra. Miguel (pictured) was fatally stabbed with a screwdriver on Wednesday night in Sheepshead Bay around 7:30 p.m. According to police, "Mr. Reyes and two of his friends had argued with Miguel at a park earlier Wednesday... Mr. Reyes and Miguel, who both lived nearby, had also argued two days earlier." The nature of the dispute was not disclosed, but the Daily News reports "it apparently stemmed from a beef between the suspects and Miguel's brother." Witnesses tell the NY Times they saw a man on a bike chasing Miguel and another boy: "They initially thought that the bicyclist was punching Miguel. By the time [Vernon] Wade realized there was a long screwdriver in the attacker’s hand, he said, it was too late." Another witness who ran to help Miguel and started to call for help says the boy told him, "No police, no police. They were chasing us. They stabbed me. I have to go," before managing to walk half a block and collapsing. Reyes has a 2006 arrest for cocaine and knife possession.

13-Year-Old Fatally Stabbed, Cops Look For "Young Suspects"

On Wednesday evening, 13-year-old Miguel Saavedra was fatally stabbed with a screwdriver near his Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn home. According to WCBS 2, "The incident happened on East 15th at Avenue X. Investigators believe the screwdriver stabbing may have been the result of a weekend argument. Police say after the stabbing, the assailant hopped on a bicycle, and at least two other boys ran off." And a girl who attends I.S. 14 told the Daily News, "Some kids messed with his older brother, and the next day he went to the park alone. And that's when some kids stabbed him." The police are looking for "at least three young suspects."

Should Holocaust Memorial Park Commemorate Non-Jews?

A group of politicians and activists gathered at the city-owned Holocaust Memorial Park in Sheepshead Bay to protest the Parks Department's plans to make additions to the memorial to more prominently commemorate other groups killed under the Nazi regime on top of the Jewish victims currently being honored there now.

Teen Caught In Sheepshead Bay Crossfire

Yesterday afternoon, a Brooklyn teenager was shot while entering her Brooklyn apartment building. According to the Daily News, the 17-year-old was "shot once in the back by a gunman aiming for another man...The thug was trying to shoot a young man running inside 3023 Avenue X, part of the Nostrand Houses, when the .22-caliber bullet struck the 17-year-old girl outside her first-floor apartment door." Friends say she was returning home from the store and that she is a student at Sheepshead Bay High School (which is across the street). Her injuries are not life-threatening. And, early on Sunday morning, a man fired into a crowd on a Bronx street; one person was injured and the shooter is still at large.

Stop Work Order at Lundy’s Site Halts ‘Cherry Hill’

Part of the floor plan devoted to a new, 400-seat restaurant inside the historic Lundy’s space in Sheepshead Bay is what developers are calling an “ancillary use” gourmet foods market. The controversial Cherry Hill Market, the Buildings Department contends, is actually just a grocery store by another name.

Historic Lundy's Moves From Clams to 'Cherry Hill'

Historic restaurant Lundy’s—whose home is a sprawling stucco building in Sheepshead Bay—will reopen as a 19,000 square foot gourmet market called Cherry Hill. The building’s owner David Isaev, who has been met with measures of opposition and support during the renovation process, previewed the property to the community on Tuesday. Blogger Gerristen Beach has photos, and Sheepshead Bites has a recap, including this bit of intel about an accompanying restaurant: building manager Anthony Kelley “mentioned that the market will also have a restaurant. Although he did not mention the names of the chefs, he said that two who worked in New York restaurants had been hired to work at Cherry Hill—pointing to the menus they have already developed.”

Back from Israel, Bloomberg Orders Blitz on Potholes

One day he's posing for photo-ops with Middle East war as his backdrop, the next he's filling potholes for photographers in Sheepshead Bay—but according to Mayor Bloomberg, it's all part of the same gig: "That's the mayor's job, filling potholes and showing the flag and trying to support those that help us keep a safer world." Running for re-election happens to be another job requirement, and with a controversial third term within his grasp, we can expect to see Hizzoner doing more press highlighting kitchen table issues like these.

Those seeking a Brooklyn abode on a budget are doing so in the borough's far south and east corners, The Observer is reporting. "In the second quarter of 2008, the median home sales price for Brooklyn was $525,000 ... of the 3,766 homes sold under $525,000 in Brooklyn so far this year nearly half are within the 10 neighborhoods of Sheepshead Bay, Kensington, Flatbush, Gravesend, East New York, Clinton Hill, Bay Ridge, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Williamsburg and Park Slope." Sheepshead Bay is noted as seeing a dramatic increase amongst first-time home buyers. Another area, which recently got the Times treatment, is Kensington--where one couple in their 30s purchased a 3-bdrm postwar co-op for $313,000 in 2004. Today it would likely go for around $500K. With the economy as it is now, however, one broker noted that it's unlikely you'll see a boom with property values rising in places like Flatbush and East New York any time soon. A tragic scene unfolded in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn yesterday morning. A man fatally stabbed his wife and then a friend in their apartment. The Daily News points out these are the 9th and 10th murders "in southern Brooklyn since March 20."

According to new NYPD statistics, graffiti complaints in Brooklyn rose 96% last year, with arrests in the borough increasing by 33%. Citywide, complaints almost doubled from 4,886 in 2006 to 8,866 in 2007, and total arrests rose from 2,962 to 3,786. Williamsburg leads the tagging trend with a total of 186 complaints.

Sure, getting dumped hurts, but does that mean you need to deface an entire neighborhood? A Brooklyn man was arrested after police discovered he was behind a number of swastikas found in Brooklyn, apparently acting out after being left for another (possibly more stable) man.

Two hit and run drivers were arrested late this week; one through the actions of a horrified but brave bystander and the other through a successful effort by the Brooklyn Accident Investigation squad. Cops arrived at Sergey Satyr's Mill Basin home Thursday to arrest the 20-year-old for the hit-and-run death of 71-year-old Grace Smith of Sheepshead Bay. The Brooklyn Accident Investigation squad used debris from Satyr's Nissan and a partial license plate number to track the suspect down. Satyr allegedly ran down Smith December 21st on Ocean Parkway near Avenue X.

Famed New York realtor Barbara Corcoran chimed in on a matter of public aesthetics and the nature of our city by advising that homeowners would be best served by tearing up their lawns and gardens and paving them over as a suitable place to park their cars. We'll let her speak directly on the subject, as it seems too insane to try to rephrase ourselves. From Friday's Daily News:Q. My wife and I have...

A year after Michael Sandy was lured to a parking lot at Plumb Beach in Brooklyn under the pretense of a sexual encounter and then killed in an attempted robbery, the spot on Sheepshead Bay continues to be a place where men congregate for furtive homosexual encounters. John Fox and Anthony Fortunato were both convicted last week of manslaughter as a hate crime in the death of Sandy, who was struck by a car on the Belt Parkway, where Fox and Ilya Shurov chased him. The violent crime doesn't seem to be deterring the men who still sit by themselves in their cars, smoking and waiting––for what isn't entirely clear. The New York Times sent a reporter to observe the scene in the parking lot Friday night. He approached one of the cars and the driver said he had heard of Sandy's death and the parking lot's reputation, but that wasn't why he was there. Nonetheless, the older gentleman drove off with a younger man who approached his car soon thereafter. A perfunctory search of gay cruising sites indicates that Plumb Beach is still a popular site for meetings. One site rated the rest stop parking lot as 3 ("Average") out of 5 for safety and 5 ("Hot!") out of 5 for action [Warning: site page contains graphic images].

2007_09_fortunato.jpgThe claim that Anthony Foturnato, one of three men on trial for hate crime murder of a gay man, was gay himself was not only strange to most everyone - it was apparently mysterious to the judge as well! Fortunato, Ilya Shurov John Fox, and Michael Timmins had lured Michael Sandy to meet them at a secluded location in Sheepshead Bay, via a gay chatroom, in 2006. Once there, they robbed and beat Sandy, who ran into the Belt Parkway and was hit by a car. Fortunato, Shurov and Fox were charged with murder as a hate crime; Timmins agreed to a plea deal in return for testifying against the others.

One of the defendants accused of murdering Michael Sandy as part of a hate crime a year ago is now claiming that he is innocent because he himself is a gay man. Michael Fortunato is on trial for the murder of Michael Sandy after he and three friends arranged to meet him in a secluded spot in Sheepshead Bay for a gay tryst. Instead, they ambushed the 29-year-old Williamsburg man who, fleeing his attackers, ran onto the Belt Parkway and was struck by a car and died five days later. The youngest of the four men involved in the attack, Michael Timmins, is 17 years old and pleaded guilty in exchange for his testimony against the other three men, Fortunato, Ilya Shurov and John Fox.

The three men accused of murdering Michael Sandy as part of a hate crime last year appeared in a Brooklyn courthouse yesterday. According to The New York Times, they struck humble poses––wearing ill-fitting suits and displaying good manners to courtroom personnel––that belie the joking manner they treated the alleged murder of a man chased onto the Belt Parkway, where he was struck by a car. The youngest of the four men accused in the crime, 17-year-old Gary Timmins, already pleaded guilty to attempted robbery as a hate crime and agreed to testify against Anthony Fortunato, Ilya Shurov and John Fox, who are now charged with murder as a hate crime, which carries a relatively stiffer penalty than simply murder.

Hollaback! A man was arrested for menacing, stalking and exposing himself to a woman on the B and Q trains on Monday. The Post reports that the police caught 24-year-old Jay Arungah after the victim showed them a camera phone picture of a naked Arungah.

On the Gothamist Newsmap, there are a few incidents that are not mapped but simply listed as "Unusual Rescue," with the time and place, and occasionally we learn what was so unusual about them.

The police department has launched a citywide dragnet to find suspects who fired at two police officers during a Brooklyn traffic stop early yesterday morning. 23-year-old police officer Russel Timoshenko was shot twice in the head while 26-year-old police officer Herman Yan was shot in the arm and chest. A surveillance video showed that the cops were shot before they had reached the driver and passengers in the car. The Daily News' Michael Daly describes:

Footage from the surveillance camera mounted outside the Little Red Riding Hood preschool shows the green BMW SUV pulling over.

The five men who identified themselves as police before bursting into a Cypress Hills, Brooklyn home demanding to know "Where are the drugs?" were actually just thieves. WABC's Eyewitness News is reporting that the five men were dressed in police-type clothing, with one actually wearing a bulletproof vest and wielding a gun. They tied up two female residents and pistol whipped a man as they ransacked the home. An infant lying in a crib was not disturbed by the intruders.

We know July 4th is around the corner when we hear about the police seizing caches of illegal fireworks. Yesterday, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly announced "one of the largest fireworks seizures" in city history: 9,000 pounds of fireworks were found in Sheepshead Bay. Newsday reports that the fireworks included "mortar shells typically used in professional displays, as well as something called the 800-Shot Grand Finale Saturn Missile Battery, which is as big as a small table."

After scaring residents of two boroughs when a woman discovered a pipe bomb on her Jeep Cherokee, police arrested Baudelio Rodriguez for making a pipe bomb and placing it on a car. What makes the story more strange is that it was Rodriguez's daughter who discovered the bomb - the Jeep belongs to his daughter and his wife! He was reportedly angry at his wife for leaving their Brooklyn home and staying with their daughter in Staten Island.

The story: a man walks into a clam bar and orders a plate of fried clams, and the confusion begins. “Fried clams” can refer either to squiggly strips a la HoJo’s (RIP), or clam bellies. Otherwise known as Ipswich clams, bellies refer to the shucked ball-and-chain shaped whole bivalve, minus the clam’s soft shell. In its fried form, Ipswich clams are harder to find. Regardless, there are few restaurants that serve fried clams in either form; those that do include the array of boutique oyster bars in Manhattan, and Brooklyn Fish Camp. Also in Brooklyn is the passable but nonetheless iconic Randazzo’s of Sheepshead Bay. For summer, in season clams are starting to appear on special menus: this week, Country is doing an upscale take on clam shack food, serving fried Ipswich bellies with local flounder, sauce gribiche, and frisee salad. And starting July 6th, Savoy will once again offer its special fixed-price summer clambake menu ($60, with clams on the half shell). Meanwhile, up north, the blenders and kitchens at Johnny’s Famous Reef and the rest of City Island’s fish houses are about to go into deep fried overtime. Summer is your best chance to get some real fried clams.
