- Mets 7, Pirates 6: The Mets managed a come from behind victory against the Pirates, scoring 3 runs in the 8th inning. Billy Wagner, who has struggled at times this season, picked up his 16th save of the season and his 300th career save despite allowing a two-out hit in the 9th inning. Cliff Floyd, who only recently returned to the lineup after a stint on the DL, left the game with a concussion in the 5th after a collision with Jose Reyes.
Was that a big hit? Can we think of A-Rod as a “real Yankee” now? Maybe this will spare him from being booed in the first inning of tonight’s game. Nah, it probably won’t, but let’s give A-Rod credit for hitting a big home run last night that propelled the Yankees to a 7-3 victory.
The Yankees acquired Mike Myers to get out lefty batters. He has made a career of doing that and through twenty-three games had not allowed a run this season. Unfortunately, he had not faced the best lefty in the American League and when he did, David Ortiz hit a three-run homer to propel Boston to a 7-3 victory.
After dropping the season series to the Devil Rays in 2005, it was important for the Yankees to get off to a good start against them in 2006. Tampa didn’t field their usual lineup and Mike Mussina shut them down giving up one run over six plus innings in the Yankees 9-1 victory.
The Yankees biggest question mark heading into the season was the quality of their starting pitching and the first eight games have done nothing to change that. Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina have been very good, while Chien-Ming Wang and Shawn Chacon have not. Yesterday Chacon was shaky against the Royals, but the Yankees offense bailed him out for a 12-5 win.
The Yankees used timely hitting and solid pitching to beat the Angels 3-2 Sunday night knotting their series at two games apiece. The decisive Game Five will be played tonight at 8pm.
With their 2-1 win at Baltimore and Boston's 7-2 loss at home to Toronto, the Yankees are back alone in first place with just four to play. Wednesday's hero was Shawn Chacon, a midseason pickup off Colorado's scrap heap who has, for the most part, proven to be an asset in the rotation. With the win, the Yankees will start the three-game set in Boston no worse than tied with their rivals. Even given that advantage, the AL East still looks like a toss up from this point.
As far as their lineup goes, Joe Torre moved Jason Giambi into the fifth spot just in time. He added two more home runs in Monday's win, just a day after he hit two against Kansas City in New York. Few lineups have a more fearsome middle than the Yankees', and that includes the Boston Red Sox. The rivals are nearly mirror images of each other, setting the stage for a September race that will be decided by which milks more out of their pitching staff while letting its blistering offense do the work.
Most baseball teams would love to be tied for the wild card lead and three and a half games out on August 24th. The Yankees found themselves in that position before Wednesday’s 9-2 loss to Toronto, but of course, the Yankees are not most baseball teams. They have played inconsistently all season, and given the status of their pitching staff, there is no reason to think the season’s last five weeks will see the Yankees cruise into the playoffs like years past.
He walked off the Yankee Stadium mound on April 23rd with an injured shoulder and a 9.15ERA. At the time, most Yankees’ fans weren’t sorry to see him go. Fast-forward four months later and fans are glad Jaret Wright is back. Monday night he shut down the Blue Jays for seven innings leading the Yankees to a 7-0 victory.
