That huge ramp in East River Park is finally being put into use. Tonight, 16 professional snowboarders including Shaun White, Pat Moore, and Travis Rice will head down the 9-story ramp before launching into the air onto a "double-sided pyramid landing" in the Red Bull Snowscrapers competition. The snowboarders are competing for a piece of a $100,000 purse. In addition to White, who is coming off 2009 X Games golds in Slopestyle and Superpipe, and other snowboarders, Anthrax is scheduled to perform during tonight's competition.

It's the end of an Olympic era as an emotional Michelle Kwan has pulled out of the 2006 Winter Olympics because of injury. Kwan's withdrawal means that Long Island native (and sister of 2002 Gold Medal winner Sarah Hughes) Emily Hughes, will be heading to Italy as the alternate for the team. Doubting her ability to compete at 100%, Kwan said, "I respect the Olympics too much to compete and I don't feel I can be at my best.'' While some may question whether Kwan should have been there in the first place, Gothamist feels that withdrawing like this is a classy act by the two-time Olympic medalist.
Way out in Vernon, NJ today, the U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix Series is taking place at Mountain Creek (fondly remembered by Gothamist as Vernon Valley/Great Gorge). The Grand Prix halfpipe competition takes place from 4-6:10 p.m. and will feature some of the country's best including Shaun White and Ross Powers. If that's not enough fun, Jersey's own Fountains of Wayne will be performing at 7:20. Following their performance, the 2006 U.S. Olympic team will be announced (full schedule here). It almost sounds like a perfect day. Head out to Mountain Creek, ski or ride some, watch a competition, listen to music, and find out who will represent the USA in Italy.
