Everybdoy Loves Schadenfreude

Everybdoy Loves Schadenfreude

slow news day yesterday, or the Times gave a very generous gift to Six Editor Richard Johnson on his wedding day today, devoting more than a fifth of its front page to the story, including a super classy photo of Johnson with Sharon Stone (Who doesn't like free publicity, right?). Not to mention the Gray Lady's brief history of the the gossip sheet and its lingo ("the labels it pins on the people it covers can be zingers, as the actor Alec Baldwin and the actress Cheryl Tiegs learned when Page Six dubbed him a 'bloviator' and her a 'superannuated supermodel.'") and a look at Ron Burkle the California billionaire who opened this Pandora's box. more ›

The Cinecultist's Weekly Movie Picks: Neo-Noir Edition

The Cinecultist's Weekly Movie Picks: Neo-Noir Edition

This week the multiplexes seem practically flooded with new releases, in addition to the good things already out, so much so that Gothamist is starting to fall behind on our movie consumption. But never fear, we shall surely rally. Here's a few suggestions to guide your own weekend viewing. more ›

Mackie at Christie's

Mackie at Christie's

Incase you woke up this morning thinking you'd like to buy something totally impractical with your rent money, then have we got good news for you. Designer Bob Mackie joins up with Christie's to auction off his "scene-stealing" fashions. They've been draped over stars like Sharon Stone, Carol Burnett, Cher, Brooke Shields, Sir Elton John and Diana Ross, and his costumes have been in some of the most popular Broadway shows. Now you can own a piece of it all, and of course if you're free at 2pm on a Tuesday afternoon, we're sure you can afford it as well. So loosen up the purse strings, make funny hand gestures and bid away on a dress that Cher once sweat in as Christie's and Julien's present . . .Costume & Couture [from the Private Archives of Bob Mackie]. more ›

Court's Courthouse Plea

Court's Courthouse Plea

Last time Courtney was in a NYC court, she re-did the courtroom sketch of herself. And she was admitted to Bellevue during the summer, though not to their psych ward. Of course, her marriage to Kurt Cobain was Law & Ordered...and her issues with custody of daughter Frances Bean Cobain were Kevin Hill-ed. more ›

Police Academy Is Back

Police Academy Is Back

IMDB's listing on the Police Academy and its sequels; Sharon Stone was in the fourth one. And Gothamist must say G.W. Bailey is one of the archetypes for movie villains with his great 80s performances in Police Academy movies and Mannequin. more ›

Casting Corner: Catwoman & Shopgirl

Casting Corner: Catwoman & Shopgirl

Steve Martin's novella, Shopgirl, will start filming in mid-October, with Martin playing Ray, Claire Danes as glove salesgirl Mirabelle, and Jason Schwartzman as her feckless but like-aged suitor, Jeremy. Originally Jimmy Fallon was mentioned as a possible candidate for the role of Jeremy, but may have had to drop out, due to his Saturday Night Live commitments as well as filming Taxi with Queen Latifah and Gisele Bundchen here in NY. In this case, Gothamist is pleased with the casting Schwartzman, because it means that Max Fischer meets Angela Chase. [Via Variety]

Sharon Stone: Dame for Our Time

Sharon Stone: Dame for Our Time

You have to hand it to Sharon Stone. She might be crazy, she might be annoying, she might make really stupid movie decisions, she might be emasculating, but she is a dame through and through. Like wearing a dress to throw out the first pitch for a Dodgers game. She knows how to work the press, and for that, we applaud her. When Gothamist worked on a press junket with her, where various press outlets interview stars, averaging at least 50 five minute interviews a day, she came with a different outfit for every single interview, so she could give the interviews a more personalized touch. more ›

Bad Movie Sex

Bad Movie Sex

As the natural, expected follow-up to yesterday's post about Best Movie Sex Scenes, Gothamist looks bad movie sex scenes. Using The Guardian's list based on reader opinion as a starting point, of course Gothamist agrees that the love scene between Neo and Trinity in The Matrix: Reloaded is ridiculous, but the very worst scene ever? Come on, at least these two leads are sexy and appealing, even if the context and Zion is stupid. Number 2, Showgirls - that's too easy and at least it's funny. Gothamist would offer that number 4 choice The Specialist, starring Sylvester Stallone and Sharon Stone, takes the cake. They were so sculpted and oiled up in an overchoreographed shower sex scene that we thought we were watching statues flex. Not hot at all. Other films mentioned, like Color of Night and Disclosure (pretty much anything with Michael Douglas post-Romancing the Stone) are definitely up there. more ›

New York Times Roundup

New York Times Roundup

The Post says that New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, Jr. denies that his family made him ask Howell Raines and Gerald Boyd to resign. He had, famously, right after the Jayson Blair scandal emerged, said that he would not accept Raines' and Boyd's resignations. "Towards the end of last week, and even more towards the beginning of this week, it became clear to them, and in turn to me, that the best thing for this paper would be for them to resign," Sulzberger tells Newsweek. more ›
