Oh, so you thought the Harlem Papa John's that rang up a customer as "Lady Chinky Eyes" was unique, a rare bird? How wrong you are, you sweet, naive thing. Take a moment to recall the cases of "Ching and Chong" and "Phone," then prepare to be awed by the receipt that Gawker dug up for none other than "Cassady Nippleson."
"Lady Chinky Eyes" Isn't The Only Fast Food Receipt Victim: Meet "Cassady Nippleson"
PETA Is Launching A Porn Site
PETA has dipped their toes in the porn business before, getting Sasha Grey to strip down for kittens and puppies or whatever. And now the animal rights organization wants to launch a porn website (www.PETA.xxx) to promote veganism... which sounds like maybe you'd be seeing a bunch of cute guys and gals enjoying a naked tickle fight in a pool of tofu cubes, right? Think again! PETA plans to mix pornography with graphic footage of animal suffering.
Supreme Court Rules Women's Class Action Suit Against Wal-Mart Cannot Proceed
In a unanimous opinion, the Supreme Court tossed out a massive sex-discrimination suit against Wal-Mart, stating that the 1.5 million women who would have been affected by the case may not proceed as a class. The Court ruled that the plaintiff's lawyers, who would have succeeded in trying the largest class action suit in the country's history, "improperly sued under a part of the class action rules that was not primarily concerned with monetary claims, the Times reports. In the related claim of whether or not the plaintiffs proved that "there are questions of law or fact common to the class," the court split along ideological lines 5-4, with Scalia's opinion [pdf] for the majority stating that the plaintiffs failed to prove "a common answer to the crucial question why was I disfavored." Lawmaker Demands Ben Stein's Apology For Strauss-Kahn Comments
We liked Ben Stein a lot more when he was in those Clear Eyes commercials and made money being an adorable nerd in movies and TV shows, but we should have known better of a former Nixon staffer. After a few merely idiotic missteps recently, Stein shat the bed with his ignorant, sexist comments about the Dominique Strauss-Kahn affair in American Spectator. And New York state assemblywoman Deborah Glick thinks Stein should publicly apologize.
Did Markowitz "Forget" Alleged Sexual Harassment?
[UPDATE BELOW] Strange things are afoot at Brooklyn BP Marty Markowitz's office. According to some female staffers, Markowitz's office is run like a "frat house," with male workers favored over females and Markowitz nicknaming one female staffer "Tinkerbell." Former communications director Regina Weiss filed a sexual-discrimination suit, which included testimony by former staffer Bridget Geary. However, when asked if he knew of complaints from Geary, Markowitz replied "no." Which is funny, because apparently he told former chief of staff Gregory Atkins that he did.
Is Donald Trump Sexist?
Mahsa Saeidi-Azcuy, a "fired" candidate from Donald Trump's show "The Apprentice," is accusing the business mogul of making sexually inappropriate comments toward women and favoring those female contestants he found more attractive. The accusations are really nothing new, but Saeidi-Azucy has been making a lot of noise since she got "fired" on last week's episode, and is threatening "to pull the curtains back on the cover-up." So what is she talking about?
Citibank Wants Female Employees To Act More Like Men
According to blogger David Xia, a friend of his grabbed this absolutely ridiculous card from the Citibank HR offices after interviewing there. People have been passing it around the classroom internet today, with a mixture of rage, laughter and disbelief. Because of some of the spelling errors, some think it may be a hoax, although the book it is cited from, and its author Dr. Lois P. Frankel, are very real (also: Frankel is Einhorn!).
Paladino on Emails: "I'm Not a Racist"
After it was revealed yesterday that governor hopeful Carl Paladino had sent or forwarded a series of emails containing hardcore porn, racial slurs and videos of bestiality, he attempted to explain his actions to the press. However, he didn't seem too apologetic. YNN has a video of the conference, where he starts off saying, "I confess to being human and imperfect, as are all of God's children. I'm not a racist and I say that even in some of the e-mails they have hacked from my computer."
Does Markowitz Sprinkle Sexism All Over Borough Hall?
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz is embroiled in a sex-discrimination suit filed by a former staffer, Regina Weiss. In the suit, the ex-communications director takes issue with being called "Tinkerbell" by the BBP.
If You Worked for NY Post, Shouldn't You Be Suing By Now?
Yet another former employee of the NY Post has filed a lawsuit against the tabloid, making this the billionth staffer to add his or her brushstroke to a work-in-progress portrait of the Post as a racist, sexist, alpha male locker room. The latest salvo comes from former Post photographer Mary McLoughlin, who claims she was pushed out of her job because the fratastic editors only want sexy young ladies toddling around the office. One editor, David Boyle, even referred to his young female assistants as "David's Harem," and hired a make-up artist to do them up for the holiday parties, the suit alleges. Then they dirty danced the night away, with Boyle allegedly grabbing their pelvises and "bumping" and "grinding" in an obscene way that was "unprofessional and offensive to those who had to watch this spectacle." Still, we'd like to see some photos. (tips@gothamist.com!)
Potential New Fire Commish Upsets Smoke Eaters
Controversy has kicked up around last week's reports that the city was considering Mylan Denerstein to replace Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta, who resigns at the end of the year. Denerstein, 42, a former federal prosecutor, would be the first female head commissioner, as well as one of the first African-Americans to hold the job. However, firefighters and department sources interviewed by the Post about her possible hiring yielded a tinderbox of negative reactions.
Lawsuit Accuses DEP Of Sexism
Two female employees with the city's Department of Environmental Protection are suing the department on federal discrimination charges. The Daily News reports, "Lillian Padilla and Magda Rodriguez say they get the hardest and dirtiest jobs, are routinely threatened and insulted, and are denied showers or changing rooms after working in sewage." The pair say they've had pornography put in their trucks, been called "bitches" and "dykes" (they are lesbians) and been threatened when they've complained. They also claim that other female employees have left due to the atmosphere—out of the 426 DEP laborers, five are women—with Padilla adding, "I once had a supervisor telling me that he would never have a woman telling a man what to do." The DEP said it is investigating the complaint, which has been filed with the EEOC. Rodriguez said, "I just want the policies changed so that women have equal rights. I have no shower. She has no shower. We work in sewage. That's what we do all day."
