Lots of spring weather coming up this week. As expected, Friday's cold front has gone stationary south of Long Island. Low pressure systems prefer to travel along boundaries like stationary fronts. We can expect rain from two such lows today and tomorrow. Measurable rain has fallen in Central Park every hour since midnight and should continue for much of the rest of the day.
May Rain Forever
Light April Showers
The clouds are rolling in and the sky has a threatening look to it this afternoon, but looks can be deceiving. We're very likely to see light rain beginning around 4:00 p.m and lasting until midnight at the latest. Don't worry if you forgot to bring an umbrella to work. With little wind, the cheap umbrellas that magically appear for sale on the street on days like today should last throughout the evening.
Rainy Start to the Weekend
Dear New York Times, We love your new look. Really, the re-design is visually appealing and easy to navigate. But. Gothamist also loves the weather, and when we took a look at the weather page yesterday we saw that it hasn't changed! What's the story? Is the weather not worthy of the new look? To paraphrase someone this makes us angrier than a rattlesnake at a Thai wedding. Come on, Times, get your weather page up-to-date.
A Little Rain, A Little Green
With 0.12 inches of rain falling early this morning Central Park has already had more rain in April (0.84 inches) than all of March (0.80). Because of the rain, and much to Gothamist's delight, Morningside Park was green this morning. As the rain disappears the operative word for the rest of the day is brisk. Brisk as in highs in the mid-to-upper-40s and wind gusts up to 30 mph this afternoon. Spring lovers do not despair, tomorrow will be ten degrees warmer and sunny. Rain returns Friday and Saturday because it is April and we live in the northeastern U.S.
Dry March, Wet April
Quick March re-cap: Dry. Last month was the driest March on record, with only 0.8 inches of precipitation. The wettest March occurred in 1983, when 10.54 inches of wet stuff fell. A nice smooth distribution over the years don't you think?
Three Warm Days
What was the name of that band that did the "Three Strange Days" song in the early-90s? Didn't they have "fish" in their name? The song came to Gothamist's mind as we were walking across town this morning thinking that New York is in for three days of beautiful weather. If you like sunny, warm spring days the rest of the week is for you. Depending on who you trust, today will be sunny and near 60 or sunny, with a high near 65. Tomorrow and Friday: Sunny, high in the mid-60s.
