Originally there was going to be quite a bit of subway work this weekend. But then the weather forecast came in predicting actual cold (and snow!) and whatdayaknow, the MTA went and canceled most of it. Though if you live past Lorimer on the L, this is still an L Hell weekend.
Scared Of Cold, Snow MTA Cancels Non-L Train Subway Work
Delayed East River Ferry Already Annoying Commuters
Perhaps this shouldn't come as a surprise, but the brand-new East River Ferry, which hasn't even been running for a full week, is already having service issues, issuing a special advisory today warning weekend passengers that there are rough seas ahead:
[UPDATE] Person Fatally Struck By R Train, Service Resumed
An MTA spokesman tells us that at 5:20 a.m., a northbound R train "struck a person on the roadbed" at the 4th Avenue and 77th Street R train stop in Brooklyn. The victim is deceased. Currently the MTA says there is "no train service between the Bay Ridge-95th Street Station and the 59th Street Station in both directions." We'll update as we know more.
Brace for MORE F 'n' G Train Pain This Weekend
You might want to extend "Bike to Work Day" into "Bike All Weekend" if you live along certain parts of the F and G lines. Once again, from 11:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, there is no G service in two sections of the line: between Forest Hills-71st Avenue and Bedford-Nostrand Avenues, and between Hoyt-Schermerhorn Streets and Church Avenue. Free shuttle buses will run between Queens Plaza and Bedford-Nostrand Avenue, and between Jay Street and Church Avenue. PLEASE BE PATIENT!
Brace for F and G Train Pain This Weekend
With rehab work on the Culver Viaduct continuing until the end of time, F and G train riders should just get used to headaches like this: From 11:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, shuttle buses will replace the F train between Jay Street and Church Avenue. According to the MTA, the service suspension will also allow for work on the Jay Street station and the construction of an "underground connector" at Lawrence Street station. And then there's the good old G train.
7 Train Down Between LIC and Times Square, Both Directions
[UPDATE: It's back.] Good morning, we hope this reaches you in time to reroute your commute if you're traveling between Long Island City and Manhattan! Due to mechanical problems at the Grand Central-42nd Street Station, there is currently no 7 train service between the Hunters Point Avenue Station and the Times Square-42nd Street Station in both directions. And earlier this morning there were big problems with the L train; service was disrupted due to "signal problems in Canarsie Tube." The MTA says the L train is now back its mobbed, normal self. You can stay up to speed by following the NYC Transit Twitter, or check the MTA website for updates.
G Train Down Now, Will Be Down All Weekend
[UPDATE BELOW] Oh why even bother anymore? It looks like this weekend's G train suspension is starting the weekend early (does this mean we can start the drinking early?). A tipster writes: "My girlfriend just informed me via text that there's a broken track somewhere on the G line and they just got let out at the Bedford-Nostrand stop with no signs of shuttle-buses or other replacement-service options. Looks like the G will never run again at this rate." And the MTA website confirms:
Service Advisory: We Hear Walking Is Good For You Too
Pity the poor tourist who comes upon this ad hoc weekend subway service advisory message scribbled on a series of dry erase boards at the Fulton St. station in Manhattan. Actually, pity any subway rider who pauses at great length to try to determine the meaning behind this advisory and then comprehends what it ultimately means for them to get to where they need to go.
This Weekend's F Train Headache
If you were planning on taking the F train anywhere this weekend, better put on your reading glasses -- Gowanus Lounge spotted commuters stalled in front of the following sign. The 9-year-old should attempt this for his next subway challenge:
