Hillary Clinton Doesn't Want Supreme Court Spot

Despite rumors to the contrary, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says she's staying put where she is. She said on "Meet the Press," "I do not and have never wanted to be a judge, ever. I mean, that has never been anything that I even let cross my mind because it's just not my personality." But is the former New York senator getting burned out at her current position? more ›

North Korea Calls Clinton A "Schoolgirl," Old Lady "Shopping"

Earlier this week, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton discussed North Korea on Good Morning America, saying, "What we've seen is this constant demand for attention... And maybe it's the mother in me or the experience that I've had with small children and unruly teenagers and people who are demanding attention -- don't give it to them, they don't deserve it, they are acting out." Well, North Korea didn't like that too much—and made a new bid for attention by slamming the Secretary of State calling her vulgar and unintelligent and saying she looks either like a schoolgirl or retiree. Wow, it's almost like primary season 2008 again! more ›

Hillary Clinton Raises Money to Retire Campaign Debt

Hillary Clinton Raises Money to Retire Campaign Debt

While President-elect Barack Obama raised nearly a billion dollars and still has $30 million left, his Secretary of State pick Hillary Clinton still has $7.5 million in campaign debt. According to the Daily News, Ugly Betty star America Ferrera is helping Clinton, whom Ferrera supported during the presidential campaign, by "hosting a 'conversation' in support of Hillary Clinton for President Debt Relief.'" Also expected at the conversation: Bill Clinton. Vice President-elect Joe Biden sent an email to Obama-Biden supporters, asking them to also help with Clinton's debt relief, "Our campaign pledged to help Sen. Hillary Clinton...retire her campaign debt... I saw your generosity and commitment to this team throughout the election, and I know we can do it. Will you make a contribution of $100 or more now to retire Hillary's campaign debt?” The money Clinton owes is mostly for vendors--and $3.5 million is for pollster Mark Penn! more ›

Taking Bets: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Vs. Constitution

Taking Bets: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Vs. Constitution

According to some annoying clause in the Constitution, Hillary Clinton (pictured) cannot be secretary of state because she was a member of the Senate during a time when the salary for secretary of state was increased. It's called the "Emoluments Clause," and previous administrations, starting with Nixon, have gotten around it by simply passing a bill reducing the salary to its previous level. Senate Democrats are working on that, but according to the Times, it's unclear whether they can pass it during a lame-duck session next week. Judicial Watch insists Obama should drop Clinton like a bag of dirt and "select someone who is eligible for the position." But let's face it, one pesky Constitutional clause has about as much of a shot at surviving the Clintons as David Gest had in court against Liza Minelli. Thank you! more ›

State Department Staffers "Excited" About Clinton

State Department Staffers "Excited" About Clinton

With Hillary Clinton getting ready to move into the executive branch as Secretary of State under President-elect Barack Obama, her future staffers are looking forward to meeting her. The NY Post reports they were "hovered around TV sets at the State Department yesterday to get a glimpse of [the] new boss... and most of them - even Republicans - said they were thrilled about the chance to work for such a high-profile figure." One staffer said, "We've all been excited since last week...The State Department is very positive about Hillary." And a Republican staffer offered, "I don't think she's inexperienced... I never imagined Hillary Clinton as taking the wingman role in foreign policy." Dude, wingwoman role! more ›

Clinton Was Offered Appropriations Committee Chair

Clinton Was Offered Appropriations Committee Chair

With Hillary Clinton poised join President-elect Obama's cabinet, the Daily News reports that Clinton "passed on becoming boss of the superpowerful Senate Appropriations Committee" for the Secretary of State gig. Which might sting to NYers, because "as chairwoman of the panel that controls the nation's purse strings, Clinton could have pumped billions in federal dollars into the Empire State." The News claims Clinton really wanted to join the health care task force, but Senator Kennedy didn't want her on board (after her presidential campaign tactics against Obama); also, she didn't have the seniority. A source says, "I don't think [Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid] wanted to take on that fight with Kennedy. So they were going to give her Appropriations." And remember when Clinton told Fox News in October, "I am not seeking any other position than to be the best senator from New York that I can be"? more ›

Bill Clinton Gets Involved in Secretary of State Talks

Bill Clinton Gets Involved in Secretary of State Talks

Politico, which cast some doubts on whether Hillary Clinton would even want to be President-elect Obama's Secretary of State yesterday, now reports, "Negotiations between the Clintons and President-elect Obama’s transition team are rapidly moving toward a formal offer of secretary of State" for Clinton, with an announcement expected within the next seven days. And "a key part of satisfying Obama’s vetting team, former President Bill Clinton is open to giving up foreign sources of income if she becomes secretary of State, according to a close friend." Bill Clinton has made a lot after leaving office (their joint tax returns showed income of $107 million between 2000 and 2007). The NY Times adds he "has agreed to release the names of some major donors to his charitable foundation and...would subject future foundation activities and paid speeches to an ethics review," and if his wife serves, "He would also cede day-to-day responsibility for his foundation... and would alert the State Department to his speaking plans and any new income sources." more ›

Does Clinton Even Want Secretary of State Gig?

Does Clinton Even Want Secretary of State Gig?

A little cold water on the excited reports that Hillary Clinton will be--or is close to being--the next Secretary of State: Politico suggests that Clinton might not even want the job. A Clinton insider says, "A lot of the speculation and reporting is out ahead of the facts here. She is still weighing this, independent of President Clinton's work." Apparently NY's junior senator is "torn" between being a member of Obama's "Team of Rivals" and her Senate work, like helping "pass health care and work on a broad range of domestic issues," which Politico says "jibes with what others close to Clinton have been saying since the Secretary of State chatter began last week: that Clinton is conflicted and the deal far from done, despite screaming headlines in outlets including the U.K.’s Guardian newspaper claiming the offer was made and accepted." Still, Bill Clinton thinks his wife would be "really great as secretary of state"--that is, if Obama "decided to ask her." more ›

British Paper: Hillary Clinton to be Obama's Secretary of State

British Paper: Hillary Clinton to be Obama's Secretary of State

British newspaper the Guardian reports, "Hillary Clinton plans to accept the job of secretary of state offered by Barack Obama, who is reaching out to former rivals to build a broad coalition administration," according to its sources. However, there are concerns regarding the vetting of former President Bill Clinton, not to mention possible conflicts--Politico points out, "it could prove problematic for Obama if the former president continues to arrange donations from foreign countries at the same time that his wife, as secretary of state, is asking them for diplomatic concessions." Clinton friend James Carville told the Washington Post, "There's a lot of momentum in the direction of this happening," but acknowledged the Bubba factor: "She's not married to Todd Palin." more ›
