Blind New Jersey Man Fights For His Right To Bear Arms

Blind New Jersey Man Fights For His Right To Bear Arms

Should a man who is legally blind and has accidentally shot himself in the shin be able to own firearms? Prosecutors in Morris County New Jersey are moving to revoke the gun rights of Steven Holper, who has been blind for most of his adult life. But they can't legally take away his weapons because he can't see, so according to the Times, authorities are attempting to use a 2003 disorderly conduct conviction to prove that Holper is an alcoholic, and therefore shouldn't be permitted to possess a firearm. Justice may be blind, but is she also a little tipsy? more ›

Bloomberg Really Wants Congress To Fix Gun Background Checks

Bloomberg Really Wants Congress To Fix Gun Background Checks

Earlier this month, Mayor Bloomberg blasted current gun laws that allowed Jared Lee Loughner, the man accused of attempting to assassinate Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, to buy a gun. Now, with his Mayors Against Illegal Guns group, he has started a new crusade to reform the background checks on gun purchases. According to the campaign, Bloomberg, other lawmakers, and victims of gun violence want Congress to do two things: "1) fulfill the letter of the historic 1968 gun law and ensure that all names of people prohibited from buying a gun are in the background check system; and 2) fulfill the intent of the historic 1968 gun law by subjecting every gun sale to a background check." more ›

City Offers Tickets To The (Illegal) Gun Show

City Offers Tickets To The (Illegal) Gun Show

Gun Show Undercover is not a new Dick Wolf crime procedural—it's actually NYC's report on the city's investigation into illegal gun sales. According to the city's press release, "The investigation, which covered seven gun shows in three states, proves on video how easy it is for criminals to buy firearms at gun shows. 35 of 47 gun sellers sold to people who said either they probably could not pass a background check or to apparent 'straw purchasers.'" And there are videos! more ›

Huge Arsenal in Staten Island Man's Home Was "Just for Hunting"

Huge Arsenal in Staten Island Man's Home Was "Just for Hunting"

President Obama's been in office just eight months, and already the government is moving in to disarm the citizenry. Why, just the other day they raided Anthony Cortese's house over in Midland Beach, Staten Island, confiscating his weapons and dragging him off in handcuffs, all because he hadn't registered some of his firearms with Obama's thought police! Cortese says he's a big game hunter (he owns property up in the Catskills) and tells the Staten Island Advance, "I think it's absolutely horrible that in America, they would take away a man's hunting rifles. I have to fight to get them back." more ›

Fred Thompson Complains About Rudy Giuliani

Fred Thompson Complains About Rudy Giuliani

Who knew thousands, if not millions, of New Yorkers would agree with presidential hopeful Fred Thompson on something? In this case, the former Senator and former Law & Order District Attorney was talking about Rudy Giuliani's reliance on touting his New York City credentials during a campaign stop in New Hampshire today. Thompson told a crowd at a gun store, Giuliani "relates everything to New York City. Well, New York City is not emblematic of... more ›

Mayor B Hates Another Republican Congressman!

Mayor B Hates Another Republican Congressman!

This is getting good: Mayor Bloomberg is pissed off by another Republican Congressman! This time it's Todd Tiahrt of Kansas, whose bill would "deny local investigators access to a federal database that traces guns," as in NYPD would not be able to trace guns. The Mayor said, "It is an outrage. It would take away the city's ability to look at the list of who has guns that may very well be used to kill people...This is an end-run by the NRA to take away the police department's ability to get guns off the street and for us to hold gun manufacturers liable." Tiahrt is a member of the NRA and his spokesperson gives the usual lip service about the Second Amendment. Good gracious, spokesperson of Tiahrt, do you not realize that civil liberties mean NOTHING to our mayor? In this case, Gothamist supports Bloomberg's attempted gun control, because it's a no-brainer. And why shouldn't the NYPD try to crack down on criminals and possible gun rings? more ›
