Rescuers Pull 19 People From Water

Rescuers Pull 19 People From Water

In two separate incidents, police and Coast Guard personnel pulled 19 individuals--including children--from the water after their boats swamped. Sixteen people were pulled from a 40-foot Sea Ray boat approximately a mile from shore and submerged so that its passengers were ankle-deep in the Long Island Sound Friday. Seven of the rescued were children. The boat began foundering when an exhaust hose broke, causing water to fill the boat. Separately, three Staten Islanders were rescued from the Hudson River near Peekskill when their sinking boat was in the path of a fuel barge. more ›

Rockin' Brooklyn

Rockin' Brooklyn

A documentary on the music scene in Brooklyn was bound to happen sooner or later. Luckily, Rockin' Brooklyn (despite the name) sounds like it will be a good one. It will delve in to the whole migration from downtown New York to Brooklyn, as high rent in Manhattan has forced artists out. Yes, Williamsburg is expensive these days too - however there is much more space provided for the money. Plus, artists don't really live in "Williamsburg proper", they all live a bit further to the east. Unless they have a trust fund. more ›

Sea Ray in...

Sea Ray in...

New York's Sea Ray have been around since the late nineties, becoming increasingly popular in recent years, finding success by complimenting layers of lush guitar with rich cello. This chamber-pop sextet have shared the stage with a wide range of great bands, including a North American tour with indie godfathers, The Church. Sea Ray are Anne Brewster (cello), Colin Brooks (drums), I-Huei Go (bass), Jeff Sheinkopf (keyboards), Jordan Warner (vocals, guitar) and Greg Zinman (guitar). Gothamist has a few questions for keyboardist - and mini-brass section - Sheinkopf and captivating cellist Brewster. more ›

Coolfer's Music Picks

Coolfer's Music Picks

For New Yorkers, this week's concert calendar should be focused on Saturday's Siren Music Festival down at Coney Island. (Hopefully the weather will hang in there. As of today the forecast is for isolated thunderstorms, which I suppose is better than intense heat and humidity.) This year's line-up is a dream come true for the fan of indie rock. Death Cab For Cutie, Blonde Redhead, TV on the Radio, the Fiery Furnaces, Har Mar Superstar, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, Electric Six, Mission of Burma and lots more.
