Friday night, Perez pitched seven shutout innings and out-pitched one of the best in the NL, Brad Penny. David Wright had a home run and Mike DiFelice went 3-for-3 as the Mets won the series opener.

  • Angels 18, Yankees 9: Do not adjust your monitors, that football-looking score is right. Perhaps it was the hangover from Monday's heartbreaking loss that caused this ugly performance by the Yankees. Or maybe it was how the Yankees pitchers were very hitable. Or maybe it was Garret Anderson as a one-man team. Anderson's line for Tuesday? 4-6, 2 runs, 10 RBI. Mike Mussina was awful, allowing 7 earned runs in only 1.2 innings, but it seemed like everyone that pitched for the Yankees (except Luis Vizcaino) was just as bad. Ron Villone - 4 runs in 1/3 innings; Edwar Ramirez - 2 runs in 2 innings; Sean Henn - 5 runs in 3 innings. It was almost like watching a bad Little League game as the Angels batted around in the 2nd and 3rd innings.

    • Angels 7 Yankees 6 (10 innings):Extr Up and down, up and down, this game kept spinning. Alex Rodriguez hit a two-run homer to put New York ahead, but the Angels came back. Jorge Posada hit a homer to tie things up in the eighth, but the Angels wouldn’t relent. They made things very interesting in the bottom of the ninth, but Mariano escaped a huge jam.

It was apparent early that Chien-Ming Wang didn’t have it. He was giving up flyballs, always a sign of trouble for him, and missing his spots. Despite that, he could have escaped the initial damage if his defense had helped him out. Bobby Abreu made two bad plays in the outfield and Jorge Posada and Alex Rodriguez couldn’t complete a rundown. Suddenly, it was 4-1 and things got worse after that.

-Blue Jays 3 Yankees 2: Sean Henn on the mound, Posada, Damon, Jeter and Giambi in the dugout; it’s hard to say the Yankees really wanted to win this game. Then again, that’s the luxury you have when you only need one more win (or Red Sox loss) to clinch the division. While New York couldn’t get the win, the Twins took care of Boston and the Yankees won their ninth-consecutive AL East crown.

Two hundred million dollars can buy a lot of things, but apparently it cannot buy a baseball team with heart. The day after being stymied by Pedro Martinez, the Yankee bats took another game off, this time against Tom Glavine who came into his start on Saturday with an ERA over 5. When the dust had settled, the Mets had won the contest 10-3 and chants of “Let’s Go Mets!” had filled Yankee Stadium.

The runs for the Mets came in an odd fashion last night. In the 2nd inning, the Mets had three sacrifice flies, becoming the first team in the National League to have three sac flies in an inning. How did they get three? A fly ball to Bernie Williams would have allowed a run to score but Williams misplayed the ball and didn't catch it. The inning was extended with the error and the play was still scored a sacrifice.

The Mets head to Yankee Stadium having rebounded from a disastrous start to their current road trip. After dropping five of six, the Mets took two out of three from the Phillies and have to be feeling pretty good about themselves as they head to the Bronx. Pedro Martinez will get the series started for the Mets. Martinez has exceeded the Mets’ expectations going 7-2 with a 2.76ERA, but has struggled against the Yankees in the past. Tom Glavine and Kris Benson will pitch Saturday and Sunday.

Sean Henn can’t seem to beat the Devil Rays. Summoned from AAA to make a second start against the Rays, Henn produced the same results as the first and the Yankees lost to Tampa 5-4. Henn had been an emergency starter in May and claimed that nervousness led to his poor performance. This time around he had flown into New York on Sunday to prepare, but it made no difference as he walked seven batters in just over four innings and left with the Yankees losing 4-0.

The Yankee offense did manage ten hits, but could never get the big one, stranding twelve runners on the basepaths and allowing the Devil Rays’ pitchers to escape several jams. The lone bright spot was Tino Martinez who homered for the second consecutive game. Jason Giambi was hit in the head with a pitch and had to leave the game for tests. The extent of his injury and that of Bernie Williams, who will have an MRI on Friday, have not yet been determined.
