Last Night's Action: One Away From History

  • Devils 5, Coyotes 2: With Wayne Gretzky watching from the opposing bench, Martin Brodeur moved to within one win of Patrick Roy's all-time wins mark. Win No. 550 came on a 26-save performance and set up a chance to tie the record in Montreal -- Roy's former stomping grounds and Brodeur's hometown. Brodeur's chase of history is a nice distraction for the Devils, who have the division under control as the season starts to wind down.
  • Syracuse 127, Connecticut 117 (6OT): That's right, six overtimes. That means the the two teams played 1.75 games in the final Big East quarterfinal. Syracuse blew a seven-point lead at the end of regulation and had what would have been a game-winning Eric Devendorf 3-pointer waved off at the final buzzer. The teams then finished tied five more times before Connecticut ran out of gas. Jonny Flynn had 34 -- including 16-of-16 from the line -- to lead the Orange, which gets West Virginia next. Thanks to foul trouble, Syracuse walkon Justin Thomas picked up his first rebound of the season. Flynn played 67 out of 70 minutes. Unreal.
  • Rangers 4, Predators 2: Maybe the Rangers do want to make the playoffs. Sean Avery scored the first goal. Scott Gomez, Marc Staal and Fredrik Sjostrom added later strikes as the Rangers picked up a road win .At one point, the team was down 2-1, but three unanswered too care of that.

Last Night's Action: Panic in the Streets of New York

Hurricanes 3, Rangers 0: If the playoffs started today, the Rangers would not be in them. For the first time all season, the Rangers are in ninth place. They had 28 shots on goal but couldn't light the lamp. How crowded is the playoff chase? Carolina went from ninth place to fifth. The Rangers have time to get things in gear, but adding Sean Avery won't lead to a perfect finish. They had been 2-0 with the controversial winger back in tow.

Last Night's Action: Nets Knock Off Knicks

Devin Harris had 35 points for New Jersey while Vince Carter added 25. David Lee had another double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds to lead New York.

The Grate One Returns: Rangers Claim Avery

In a move that will surprise no one, the Rangers claimed Sean Avery on re-entry waivers today. The move means that Avery will be back with the Rangers for the remainder of this season and the next three. It will be interesting to see how Avery and his new coach get along. John Tortorella issued a scathing critique of Avery after his infamous comments saying:

''Enough is enough. He's embarrassed himself, he's embarrassed the [Dallas] organization, he's embarrassed the league and he's embarrassed his teammates, who have to look out for him. Send him home. He doesn't belong in the league.''
In addition, the move further restricts the Rangers in relation to the salary cap and they will have to make some tough choices after this season with some of their younger players who will be restricted free agents.

With their season at a crossroads, the Rangers are trying to bring back an old friend. Get ready for the return of Sean Avery to Broadway. Avery, who is currently in a treatment program for talking about how Dion Phaenuf was dating his “sloppy seconds”, has started skating again and could be back in the NHL shortly. The thing is the Dallas Stars, who coincidentally play the Rangers tonight, don’t want him back and are trying to rid themselves of his contract.

Former NY Rangers player Sean Avery met with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman today to discuss further fallout of his remarks disparaging fellow hockey players and ex-girlfriends. Slapshots says it seems that the Dallas Stars, which signed him after the Rangers decided to let him go, are looking to get rid of him and "dispose of his four-year, $15.5 million contract." Last night, Avery released an apology to The Sporting News--"I would like to sincerely apologize for my off-color remarks to the press yesterday from Calgary. I should not have made those comments and I recognize that they were inappropriate. It was a bad attempt to build excitement for the game, but I am now acutely aware of how hurtful my actions were." -- apparently because the Dallas Stars refused to release it! Former Rangers and Islanders goalie Glenn Healy who now works for the players' association said, "He knows he said something he shouldn't have. He's a good kid who used the wrong words in the wrong forum." As for a decision, a statement could be released later today or tomorrow; currently Avery is suspended indefinitely.

Sure, Sean Avery was traded to the Dallas Stars, but he left his mark as Ranger, what with the Sean Avery/Nitwit Rule for this move in April. But for all his antics, he was never suspended before--until now.

Did Sean Avery win a Stanley Cup with the Rangers when we weren’t looking? Sorry for asking, but with all the ovations for Avery Sunday and Monday it seemed like we had forgotten something. Avery certainly meant a lot to the Rangers in his 18 months with the team, but he was hardly the second coming of Mark Messier.

Whether he's being a pest on the ice or a fashionista at a glossy magazine, Sean Avery makes his presence known. And now the city of Dallas will be seeing a lot more of him as the Dallas Stars have agreed to give Avery $15.5 million over four years. Stars co-manager Bret Hull said of the notorious player, "He goes against the stream, which I kind of like. He reminds me of myself in a way. I think every team needs that."

The New York Rangers Sean Avery was released from the hospital yesterday, just in time to attend the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute Gala tonight! He'll be there as a guest of Vogue, where he is set to begin an editorial internship this week.

The New York Rangers are on the brink of elimination in their 7-game series against the Pittsburgh Penguins, but Rangers forward and "enforcer" Sean Avery is on a much more serious brink. Avery was hospitalized at St. Vincent's Hospital early this morning around 3 a.m. for a lacerated spleen and he remains there this afternoon. Which means Avery will be out for the rest of the season.

  • Braves 6, Mets 3: The Mets still aren't hitting. All three of their runs came on consecutive bases-loaded walks in the third inning by Atlanta starter Jair Jurrgens. Winning becomes tough when the only hits come from the No. 7 and 8 hitters -- in this case Marlon Anderson and Raul Cassanova. Jose Reyes' on-base percentage after an 0-for-4 night? .289. Mike Pelfrey took the loss because he allowed Kelly Johnson's go-ahead homer in the sixth. Four walks in 5 1/3 innings also hurt him.
  • Sean Avery is a punk, but now he has made the NHL change its rules in the middle of the playoffs. His antics in front of Devils goalie triggered the league to say that will be called unsportsmanlike conduct. The series continues Wednesday with the Rangers up, 2-1.
  • Yankees 4 Boston 1: If Bobby Abreu didn’t have a fear of outfield walls, Chien-Ming Wang would have pitched a one-hit shutout against the Red Sox. “Nancy” Drew’s flyball to right was the only blot on Wang’s ledger as he went the distance. The Yankees got a home run from Giambi and some big hits from Matsui and Molina to take home the win.
  • Pittsburgh 2 Devils 0: New Jersey has picked the absolute worst time to head into a tailspin. Tuesday night, the Penguins sent the Devils to their fourth-straight game without a win, thanks to goals from Ryan Malone and Marion Hossa. With the win, the Penguins now have a four-point lead over New Jersey, but the Devils do have a game in hand.

  • Bulls 112, Nets 96: The Nets did a great Knicks impression in this one. Fall behind big early. Then make a token run but still lose handily in the fourth quarter. The worst news? Devin Harris sprained his ankle. X-rays were negative, but he'll be evaluated Wednesday.

  • Rangers 4, Islanders 1: Two days after having their dramatic rally ruined in a shootout, the Rangers crushed the Islanders, 4-1, and continued their surge at the season's most critical times. They drew Wade Dubielewicz in goal -- Rick DiPietro had missed too much time following the death of his grandmother -- but most goalies would have had trouble Thursday. The Rangers led this one 89 seconds into the game on a Brendan Shanahan goal. Sean Avery may have broken off contract negotiations. but he's also breaking off great slapshots from the slot. Scott Gomez also scored, and Avery enjoyed the stat-padder of all stat-padders, an empty-netter in a game already decided. Sean Bergenheim had the Islanders' only goal.

    • Rangers 4 Carolina 2: It was the perfect blend of the old and the new for New York on Thursday. Brandon Dubinsky got things started for the Rangers with a great backhand off of the pretty feed from Jaromir Jagr. Sean Avery came off the bench at the right time to grab the puck and score a goal right before the first period ended to make it 2-0. It was 3-2 in the third when Nigel Dawes fed Brendan Shanahan with a perfect cross-ice pass to make it 4-2 and clinch the win.

Five different Rangers scored goals and ten different Rangers had points in the win. Brandon Dubinsky showed his versatility when he pulled Sean Avery away from a fight, only to step into the action on his own. Dubinsky fought to a draw which was about the only thing the Rangers didn’t win Sunday.

  • Nets 102, Pacers 91: Richard Jefferson doesn't appear to miss Jason Kidd. He dropped 36 points, made 12 of his 21 field goals -- and eight of his 10 free throws -- as the Nets avenged Friday's loss at Indiana. Don't look past Josh Boone, either. He had 19 points, 13 rebounds and made all five of his free throw attempts.
    • Rangers 5, Sabres 1: Five days off, but only 10 seconds to score. Sean Avery got the Blueshirts off to a great start and they finally got the taste of Sunday's overtime loss to Washington out of their mouths. "I don't think we expected that great of a start," said Brendan Shanahan. He has to be telling the truth. Who sits at his locker lacing up his skates and says, "I think we'll score within nine seconds"? No one, that's who.
    • Islanders 4, Thrashers 1: The Rangers took 10 seconds to score, but the Islanders denied the Thrashers a goal until 77 seconds remained in this one. Miroslav Satan, Ruslan Fedotenko, Marc-Andre Bergeron and Sean Bergenheim all scored for the Islanders. Don't look now -- actually, it's safe to look -- they've won three straight. Up next: San Jose on Monday. It's at home, so the team won't get lost.
    • Devils 3, Senators 2: Jason Kidd was in the NBA's skills challenge, but, even if his trade has fallen through, he still doesn't feel like a true local player. With him as the only such representative in Saturday's NBA festivities -- if not playing defense were a skill, Eddy Curry would have been there -- the Devils had to show off their talent. Arron Asham had as many goals as he has R's in his first name, and Martin Brodeur had 37 times as many saves as he has B's in his last. The Devils won despite finishing a 10-round shootout the night before.

Vince Carter put forth one of his best efforts of the season -- a 29-point, nine-rebound performance. And that was after a nasty elbow sent him to the locker room. But the Nets' defense -- or the Mavericks' poor shooting -- was the story in this one. Dallas made only 36.5 percent of its shots.

  • Captials 3, Rangers 2 (OT): Ryan Hollweg will have five full days to think about the tripping penalty he took in the final minute of regulation. Just 23 seconds after the teams took the ice in overtime, the Capitals finally converted on a power play and took the two points. Steve Valiquette, who had shutouts in his last two starts, played on consecutive nights for the first time in his career. That didn't go over so well, but the goal in overtime wasn't his fault. He had 21 saves. Sean Avery and Chris Drury lit the lamp for the Rangers.
  • Sean Avery, placed on the top line with Gomez and Jagr got things started with a goal at 12:12 of the first period. Brandon Dubinsky scored a few minutes later and the Rangers never looked back. Jaromir Jagr capped the scoring in the third period with some hard work and a nice assist from Martin Straka who handed Jagr a replacement stick after he broke his original one.

Jamal Crawford led the way with 35 points and eight assists, including a huge three-pointer when the game was tied at 102. Zach Randolph had 24 points and 11 rebounds Vince Carter had 26 and Richard Jefferson 22 in the loss.

Unfortunately for New York, Ryan Hollweg took a stupid boarding penalty and his five-minute major penalty combined with Martin Staraka’s holding penalty resulted in a 5-on-3 advantage for the Oilers. Edmonton converted and their second power-play goal of the game looked like it would hold up. But, Sean Avery drew a big penalty late in the third and with the goaltender pulled, the Rangers converted with six second left in the game, thanks to Chris Drury and after overtime, things headed to a shootout.

The Lakers cruised to a 70-45 lead and then had to hang on against a Knicks’ rally that happened with the unit of Nate Robinson, David Lee, Malik Rose, Jared Jeffries and Jamal Crawford playing most of the minutes. What changes are coming? It’s hard to say, but a good start would be splitting Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph up. Let’s just hope Isiah doesn’t start making trades.

The New York Rangers have hit a speed bump, coming out flat in two-straight games, getting some bad goaltending and losing badly at home. Thursday night’s 6-2 loss was even more disappointing than Tuesday’s because the Rangers rallied in this game and then fell apart. Down 2-0 in the first the Rangers came back with two goals off of the power play to even things up heading into the second. But, Toronto took the...

Rangers 2 Tampa 1: New York got back on track quickly, coming out in the first period with intensity and jumping to a 1-0 lead thanks to Fedor Tyutin. Henrik Lundqvist wss his usually brilliant self, making 32 saves including several huge ones while the Rangers clung to a one-goal lead. It wasn’t until Colton Orr hit a knuckleball off the stick of a Lightning defenseman at 2:05 of the third period, that the...

Rangers 4 Philadelphia 3 (Shootout): The Rangers have overcome their slow start and moved into a tie for first place. Brendan Shanahan had a goal in regulation and the game-winner in the shootout to power New York. Henrik Lundqvist kept the Flyers off the board in the shootout, stopping all three shots he faced. Marc Staal played another solid game paired with Rozsival and Marek Malik has to be worried about regaining his starting spot....
