Miranda And Sean Avery Go To Albany For Gay Marriage

Miranda And Sean Avery Go To Albany For Gay Marriage

Marriage equality is thisclose to coming to a vote in Albany (and only two votes shy of assured success) but don't start planning those Fire Island nuptials just yet. Though Governor Cuomo yesterday announced three democrats had come to the light, and an announcement quickly followed up by an additional Republican switching teams, the measure still needs to make it to a vote before the end of the session on Monday, and once there it still needs to pass. Which is why activists are going overboard trying, in the words of the National Organization for Marriage's Brian Brown, to "create a myth of inevitability." Luckily Miranda is on it. more ›

Video: Chicago Bulls' Joakim Noah Hurls Gay Slur At Fan

During a televised sporting event that was watched by literally millions of people last night, Chicago Bulls center Joakim Noah was caught on one of the dozens of cameras which are constantly trained on him calling a fan a "f**king faggot." Clearly upset over being called for his second foul in the first quarter of the game, you can hear Joakim shout the slur around 0:19: more ›

Sean Avery Kinda Gets Canadian TV Sports Host Fired

Sean Avery Kinda Gets Canadian TV Sports Host Fired

Rangers left wing Sean Avery may be a nitwit. He may also be a horrible ex-boyfriend. But Avery stands up for what he believes in, as shown by his support for gay marriage in New York. The Human Rights Campaign released a public service announcement from the controversial player last week, prompting sport industry figures to praise and criticize him, notably sports agent Todd Reynolds chiding on Twitter, "Very sad to read Sean Avery's misguided support of same-gender "marriage". Legal or not, it will always be wrong." Now, a Canadian TV host has found himself without a job after saying on Twitter, "I completely and whole-heartedly support Todd Reynolds and his support for the traditional and TRUE meaning of marriage." more ›

Sean Avery's Marriage Equality Video Gets Love, Some Hate

Sean Avery's Marriage Equality Video Gets Love, Some Hate

Over the weekend Sean Avery, the former Vogue intern and left wing for the Rangers, released a Human Rights Campaign video in support of marriage equality. The video, the first of its kind from a professional New York athlete, was met with the expected mix reactions, including an unfortunate series of tweets by Uptown Sports agent Todd Reynolds ("Very sad to read Sean Avery's misguided support of same-gender "marriage". Legal or not, it will always be wrong"). But then something interesting happened. Instead of agreeing with Reynolds, the notoriously homophobic sports community seems to be taking the just plain notorious Avery's side. more ›

Sean Avery Records PSA In Support Of Gay Marriage

Rangers' left wing Sean Avery has drawn ire from the starlets he's insulted, the players he's assaulted, and just about everyone else. But with the release of a PSA for the Human Rights Campaign in support of gay marriage in New York, the former Vogue intern is seeking to unite voters in the issue, telling the Times "I certainly have been surrounded by the gay community. And living in New York and when you live in LA, you certainly have a lot of gay friends." more ›

Video: Sean Avery Shows Off Classy Playing Style Once Again

Here's a word to the wise: If you're going to confront Sean Avery, don't skate away with your hands down. After Avery hit Colin Fraser during last night's 8-2 rout of the Oilers at MSG, Edmonton defender Ladislav Smid exchanged a few words with Avery and skated off when he was apparently rebuffed. But the Rangers left wing soon had a change of heart, apparently, and decided to sucker punch Smid when he had his defenses down. The benches-clearing brawl that ensued resulted in penalties for eight players adding up to 126 minutes. more ›

With Lindsay Lohan In NYC, No Party Is Safe

Maybe Lindsay Lohan really is a Mean Girl—Page Six claims that "multiple witnesses" say the troubled star picked a fight with NY Rangers teammates Aaron Voros and Sean Avery at 1OAK on Thursday night: "Lindsay threw a fit. There was total drama for absolutely no reason." Did NYC nightlife impresarios not get the warning that she was in town? more ›

Last Night's Action: Nets Win Eighth Game

Last Night's Action: Nets Win Eighth Game

Nets 93 Sacramento Kings 79: While a win would be good news for any other team, it's remarkable news for the New Jersey Nets. For those keeping track, this means that if the Nets can win one more game in their remaining 11, they'll tie the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers' for the most losses in a season (the Nets have lost 63 so far). more ›

Last Night's Action: The Grate One Returns

Rangers 5 Dallas 2: You know Sean Avery had this one circled on the calendar. Ever since some of his Dallas teammates took shots at him on his way out the door, Avery had to want a chance at revenge. He got it Wednesday, playing with the passion and grittiness that has been missing far too often from his game this year. Avery ended up with four points, having a hand in every Rangers’ goal except the empty-netter at the end and he spent 12 minutes in the sin bin. Henrik Lundqvist made 25 saves, some of them very tough ones to earn the victory. The Rangers can only hope that this sparks Avery to return to his old ways. more ›

Last Night's Action: 58 Saves!

  • Islanders 4 Toronto 3 (OT): Dwayne Roloson made an amazing 58 saves as he carried the Islanders to victory. Despite Roloson’s heroics, he did surrender a 3-0 lead as the Maple Leafs were rewarded for all their tenacity in the offensive end. But, Josh Bailey scored the game-winner in overtime, rewarding Roloson with a well-deserved win.

Last Night's Action: One Away From History

Last Night's Action: One Away From History

  • Devils 5, Coyotes 2: With Wayne Gretzky watching from the opposing bench, Martin Brodeur moved to within one win of Patrick Roy's all-time wins mark. Win No. 550 came on a 26-save performance and set up a chance to tie the record in Montreal -- Roy's former stomping grounds and Brodeur's hometown. Brodeur's chase of history is a nice distraction for the Devils, who have the division under control as the season starts to wind down.
  • Syracuse 127, Connecticut 117 (6OT): That's right, six overtimes. That means the the two teams played 1.75 games in the final Big East quarterfinal. Syracuse blew a seven-point lead at the end of regulation and had what would have been a game-winning Eric Devendorf 3-pointer waved off at the final buzzer. The teams then finished tied five more times before Connecticut ran out of gas. Jonny Flynn had 34 -- including 16-of-16 from the line -- to lead the Orange, which gets West Virginia next. Thanks to foul trouble, Syracuse walkon Justin Thomas picked up his first rebound of the season. Flynn played 67 out of 70 minutes. Unreal.
  • Rangers 4, Predators 2: Maybe the Rangers do want to make the playoffs. Sean Avery scored the first goal. Scott Gomez, Marc Staal and Fredrik Sjostrom added later strikes as the Rangers picked up a road win .At one point, the team was down 2-1, but three unanswered too care of that.

Last Night's Action: Panic in the Streets of New York

Hurricanes 3, Rangers 0: If the playoffs started today, the Rangers would not be in them. For the first time all season, the Rangers are in ninth place. They had 28 shots on goal but couldn't light the lamp. How crowded is the playoff chase? Carolina went from ninth place to fifth. The Rangers have time to get things in gear, but adding Sean Avery won't lead to a perfect finish. They had been 2-0 with the controversial winger back in tow. more ›

The Grate One Returns: Rangers Claim Avery

The Grate One Returns: Rangers Claim Avery

In a move that will surprise no one, the Rangers claimed Sean Avery on re-entry waivers today. The move means that Avery will be back with the Rangers for the remainder of this season and the next three. It will be interesting to see how Avery and his new coach get along. John Tortorella issued a scathing critique of Avery after his infamous comments saying:

''Enough is enough. He's embarrassed himself, he's embarrassed the [Dallas] organization, he's embarrassed the league and he's embarrassed his teammates, who have to look out for him. Send him home. He doesn't belong in the league.''
In addition, the move further restricts the Rangers in relation to the salary cap and they will have to make some tough choices after this season with some of their younger players who will be restricted free agents. more ›

Could Sean Avery Return To Broadway?

Could Sean Avery Return To Broadway?

With their season at a crossroads, the Rangers are trying to bring back an old friend. Get ready for the return of Sean Avery to Broadway. Avery, who is currently in a treatment program for talking about how Dion Phaenuf was dating his “sloppy seconds”, has started skating again and could be back in the NHL shortly. The thing is the Dallas Stars, who coincidentally play the Rangers tonight, don’t want him back and are trying to rid themselves of his contract. more ›

Sean Avery Meets with NHL in NYC

Sean Avery Meets with NHL in NYC

Former NY Rangers player Sean Avery met with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman today to discuss further fallout of his remarks disparaging fellow hockey players and ex-girlfriends. Slapshots says it seems that the Dallas Stars, which signed him after the Rangers decided to let him go, are looking to get rid of him and "dispose of his four-year, $15.5 million contract." Last night, Avery released an apology to The Sporting News--"I would like to sincerely apologize for my off-color remarks to the press yesterday from Calgary. I should not have made those comments and I recognize that they were inappropriate. It was a bad attempt to build excitement for the game, but I am now acutely aware of how hurtful my actions were." -- apparently because the Dallas Stars refused to release it! Former Rangers and Islanders goalie Glenn Healy who now works for the players' association said, "He knows he said something he shouldn't have. He's a good kid who used the wrong words in the wrong forum." As for a decision, a statement could be released later today or tomorrow; currently Avery is suspended indefinitely. more ›

Last Night's Action: The Grating One Returns

Last Night's Action: The Grating One Returns

Did Sean Avery win a Stanley Cup with the Rangers when we weren’t looking? Sorry for asking, but with all the ovations for Avery Sunday and Monday it seemed like we had forgotten something. Avery certainly meant a lot to the Rangers in his 18 months with the team, but he was hardly the second coming of Mark Messier. more ›

Last Night's Action: Not a Good Start

Last Night's Action: Not a Good Start

  • Braves 6, Mets 3: The Mets still aren't hitting. All three of their runs came on consecutive bases-loaded walks in the third inning by Atlanta starter Jair Jurrgens. Winning becomes tough when the only hits come from the No. 7 and 8 hitters -- in this case Marlon Anderson and Raul Cassanova. Jose Reyes' on-base percentage after an 0-for-4 night? .289. Mike Pelfrey took the loss because he allowed Kelly Johnson's go-ahead homer in the sixth. Four walks in 5 1/3 innings also hurt him.

Last Night's Action: Hanging On for Dear Life

Last Night's Action: Rangers Win Again, Yanks Beat Sox

  • Yankees 4 Boston 1: If Bobby Abreu didn’t have a fear of outfield walls, Chien-Ming Wang would have pitched a one-hit shutout against the Red Sox. “Nancy” Drew’s flyball to right was the only blot on Wang’s ledger as he went the distance. The Yankees got a home run from Giambi and some big hits from Matsui and Molina to take home the win.

Last Night's Action: Red-Hot Rangers Get Revenge

Rangers 4, Islanders 1: Two days after having their dramatic rally ruined in a shootout, the Rangers crushed the Islanders, 4-1, and continued their surge at the season's most critical times. They drew Wade Dubielewicz in goal -- Rick DiPietro had missed too much time following the death of his grandmother -- but most goalies would have had trouble Thursday. The Rangers led this one 89 seconds into the game on a Brendan Shanahan goal. Sean Avery may have broken off contract negotiations. but he's also breaking off great slapshots from the slot. Scott Gomez also scored, and Avery enjoyed the stat-padder of all stat-padders, an empty-netter in a game already decided. Sean Bergenheim had the Islanders' only goal. more ›

    • Rangers 4 Carolina 2: It was the perfect blend of the old and the new for New York on Thursday. Brandon Dubinsky got things started for the Rangers with a great backhand off of the pretty feed from Jaromir Jagr. Sean Avery came off the bench at the right time to grab the puck and score a goal right before the first period ended to make it 2-0. It was 3-2 in the third when Nigel Dawes fed Brendan Shanahan with a perfect cross-ice pass to make it 4-2 and clinch the win.
