  • In the U.S. Open, Ashe Stadium saw Venus Williams and Roger Federer win under the lights. Richard Gasquet and Daniela Hantuchova were upset victims.
  • Blue Jays 2, Yankees 1: The Johnny Damon-in-center experiment didn't go well Tuesday. He misplayed a ball by Marco Scutaro -- he's a Yankees-killer -- that turned into the go-ahead double as the Yankees wasted a rare strong start from Darrell Rasner in the opener in Canada. After Bobby Abreu's double scored Damon in the first, the Yankees didn't get anything going. Rasner went 6 2/3 innings against a mostly impotent Blue Jays offense, but he'll take it. The Yankees cannot take losses like this, though.
  • Pirates 7, Mets 5: Blowing a lead is one thing. But doing it against the Pirates, who had Luis Rivas hitting second, Doug Mientkiewicz hitting third (!) and Chris Gomez hitting eighth just makes it more embarrassing. Pedro Martinez realized he was facing the Bucs and only allowed one run in six innings. But Joe Smith, Pedro Feliciano, Aaron Heilman (of course) and Scott Schoeneweis all pitched in to blow it. The good news? Robinson Cancel hit his first career homer. Now the Mets hit the road to Washington and Pittsburgh. They are two games out of first place.
  • Angels 11, Yankees 4: Dan Giese did his part, but the bullpen where he used to reside didn't help him out. He hung around six innings, long enough for him to leave with his team leading, 2-1, after Alex Rodriguez and Jason Giambi hit back-to-back homers in the top of his last inning of work. The Yankees then extended that lead to 3-1 but saw Edwar Ramirez and the rest of the bullpen implode. Yes, the Yankees have been playing the Angels for a good portion of this recent stretch of poor play, but they still are killing themselves. And how are things going to get better with Ian Kennedy, Giese (he will be exposed) and Sidney Ponson still drawing three starts out of five? Phil Hughes can't come back soon enough.
  • Mets 5, Padres 3: Sooner or later, this Mets bullpen is going to break some hearts and really trash the Mets' season. On Thursday, it just gave David Wright the chance to hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth. Johan Santana has only nine wins this year, but that's not his fault. He has a 2.85 ERA and has pitched about as well as can be expected. The same cannot be said for Duaner Sanchez and Scott Schoeneweis. The Mets host National League East rival Marlins this weekend.
  • Orioles 13, Yankees 4: That 10-game home winning streak for the Yankees is history. Mike Mussina didn't have it. Orioles starter Jeremy Guthrie did. That added up to a long night. Johnny Damon had a homer, as did Xavier Nady in his first home game, but those came way too late. The Yankees trailed 11-0 at one point. Darrell Rasner will try to stop a two-game skid Tuesday.
  • Jozy Altidore is out the door. The talented Red Bulls striker -- so young he missed a game last year for his high school prom -- will be playing games for the Spanish club Villareal. At 18, he will get valuable experience for the United States' national team. Major League Soccer, meanwhile, gets some extra coin in the ole coffer. Thanks to Juan Pablo Angel's goal in the 75th minute, the Red Bulls didn't need Altidore in a 1-0 win over Chivas USA .

    • Red Sox 7, Yankees 5: Mike Mussina will be seeing Manny Ramirez in his sleep. The Stanford graduate gave up two home runs to the George Washington High School product as part of a distressing performance. The righty allowed five runs in three innings, and, unlike Wednesday, the Yankees could not put up 15 runs.

  • Knicks 98, Pistons 94: Isiah Thomas was honored before the game in Auburn Hills, Mich., as part of the all-time Pistons team. There is no question about his place on that mythical squad. As far as his place as coach of the Knicks, this won't hurt his cause. Wilson Chandler -- maybe he should have seen some more time earlier this season? -- scored 19 points, all in the first half, as the Knicks hurt their draft-lottery position.
