- Rangers 3, Islanders 1: Not only did the Rangers win, but they never trailed. They're in the worst swoon of their season, but that doesn't mean the Islanders could beat them. This was just the second win in regulation in their past 10 games. Scott Gomez's power-play goal gave the Rangers the lead for good in the second period. Nigel Dawes scored in the first and Fredrik Sjostrom added an empty-netter; Chris Drury also had three assists. Mark Streit gave the Islanders their only flash of brilliance in the first period.
- Mavericks 113 , Nets 98: How not to end an eight-game losing streak in Dallas. Get outscored 40-15 in the third quarter. The Nets may have gotten the better of the Mavs in trades (See Harris, Devin), but they can't win in Texas. Jason Kidd lit up his former team for 23 points and 10 assists. Antoine Wright, a forgotten part of that deal, had 20 points. They return home to face Washington on Friday.
Everything is perfectly setup. Sean Avery is back on the ice in Hartford, mixing it up from the moment he stepped on the ice last night. It seems inevitable that he will be back on Broadway soon, trying to revive the Rangers’ season.
Markus Naslund got things going with a power play goal in the first and after Anaheim tied it, Freddy Sjostrum put them ahead again with a shorthanded goal. Anaheim tied it again at the end of the second, but Scott Gomez scored his first power play goal of the season to put them in front for good.
- Rangers 4, Penguins 0: Most things that didn't work during a recent slump clicked Monday at the Garden. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 27 shots, got his first shutout of the season and became the fifth NHL goalie to start a career with four seasons of 20 or more wins. The Rangers converted on two power-play opportunities -- they went 1-for-17 during their 1-3-1 stretch entering this game -- and came up with a big win. Goals from Nigel Dawes, Paul Mara, Chris Drury and Scott Gomez helped the Rangers regain first place, but they have played more games than the Flyers and the Devils.
- Nets 98, Kings 90: Yep, that's what an 8-27 team looks like. The Nets have to be worried about Devin Harris, who sat out the second half after aggravating an injury. But at least they can smile at Vince Carter's 29 and Yi Jianlian's 22. The Kings led at the 5:21 mark of the fourth quarter, but the Nets woke up in time. Harris, who missed Saturday's game against Miami, will need to feel better if his team is going to be competitive against teams better than the Kings.
- Oilers 3, Islanders 2: This quote from Andrew Cogliano, who scored the go-ahead goal for the Oilers, sums up the Islanders' state of affairs. “We just couldn’t lose this game. When a team comes in the way they did, you have to win it.” The Islanders held a 2-0 lead at one point, but that vanished into the wind.
It’s been a long wait for Chris Drury. Eleven games into the season, Drury didn’t have any goals. That changed Monday night as Drury found the net twice in the Rangers 4-2 win over the Islanders at the Nassau Coliseum. Drury scored just 56 seconds into the game to give the Rangers the lead, but the Islanders tied things up as time was expiring in the first period on a wrist shot by Kyle Okposo.
Rangers 1, Maple Leafs 0: Tom Renney mixed up his lines tonight and while it didn’t produce any points, the effort was encouraging. Chris Drury is back as a center and Scott Gomez has a couple of new wingers and both lines showed some promise Friday. But, despite 32 shots, the Rangers couldn’t crack the Toronto net.
Sabres 3, Rangers 1: The Rangers still have never started a season 6-0. They came close in 1983, and they came close again in 2008. But two Buffalo power-play goals propelled the visitors to the win on Madison Square Garden ice. Scott Gomez scored the lone Rangers goal. They had 20 shots.
- Giants 44 Seattle 6: New York took control of the game with their opening series and never looked back as they destroyed Seattle on Sunday. Starting with the ball on their own nine, it took only four plays for the Giants to lead 7-0 after Eli Manning connected with Domenik Hixon on a 32-yard strike. The Giants scored on their first six drives of the game, not even punting until about 10 minutes remained in the third quarter.

Yes, Jagr has been wonderful in a Rangers’ uniform since the lockout ended. His 54-goal season in 2004-05 revitalized a dead franchise and brought hope back to MSG. Without Jagr, the Rangers would not have advanced to the second round of the playoffs the past two years and probably would not have attracted two of the top centers in the NHL, Scott Gomez and Chris Drury to sign with the club last July.
It remained that way as the Rangers failed to convert on two abbreviated 5-on-3 advantages and Pittsburgh kept killing the clock. But, a beautiful pass from Scott Gomez to Ryan Callahan at 12:07 of the second brought the Rangers to within 1 and Jaromir Jagr tied things up less than a minute later. Suddenly, it was 3-3 and the Garden was rocking and the Rangers were a deflection off the goalpost away from taking the lead. And that is where Hollweg committed an asinine penalty, taking a boarding call in the offensive zone. Pittsburgh converted on the ensuing power play and added another goal early in the third period to put away the game and leave the Rangers’ season on life support.
You have to pick your poison when playing the Penguins. Do you try and stop Pittsburgh’s top line, anchored by Sidney Crosby, or do you focus on shutting down the equally talented, Evegni Malkin and his line? And, don’t forget about the defensemen, Sergei Gonchar and Ryan Whitney are both threats to score when they touch the puck. Clearly, keeping the Penguins off the scoreboard will be a monumental task.
Staal’s goal was one of the many highlights for the Rangers, who played a superior game to New Jersey except for a stretch in the third period. Chris Drury had a very good game, getting big wins off the draw and adding a goal and an assist. Gomez had two goals, including a very creative empty-netter to clinch the win. Patrik Elias had two goals for New Jersey and a very big uncalled slash that setup the third Devils goal. New Jersey will head home and try and fight off elimination on Friday.
- Rangers 4 Devils 1: Don’t let the score fool you, this was a close game for about 57 minutes. New York got on the board first thanks to Brendan Shanahan, but New Jersey answered with a power play goal from Paul Martin. The game remained tied until the 7:23 mark of the third period when the Devils made a bad turnover off the power play and Brandon Dubinsky hammered home a rebound off a shot for Scott Gomez. It was one of three assists for Gomez who had a great game in his playoff debut for New York.
So, the Rangers headed to their third shootout in four games. Buffalo elected to shoot first and missed, but Brendan Shanahan punched home a shot to put New York up. Both teams missed their second shots, but the Sabres scored on their final attempt leaving it up to Scott Gomez to provide the win and he did. Gomez’s goal gave the Rangers another two points and put them into a tie with Ottawa for fifth place in the Eastern Conference.
Rangers 4, Islanders 1: Two days after having their dramatic rally ruined in a shootout, the Rangers crushed the Islanders, 4-1, and continued their surge at the season's most critical times. They drew Wade Dubielewicz in goal -- Rick DiPietro had missed too much time following the death of his grandmother -- but most goalies would have had trouble Thursday. The Rangers led this one 89 seconds into the game on a Brendan Shanahan goal. Sean Avery may have broken off contract negotiations. but he's also breaking off great slapshots from the slot. Scott Gomez also scored, and Avery enjoyed the stat-padder of all stat-padders, an empty-netter in a game already decided. Sean Bergenheim had the Islanders' only goal.
Nigel Dawes got the Rangers on the board near the end of the third period as he converted a power play chance. Scott Gomez who assisted on the first goal followed with a goal of his own, setup by a great screen from Chris Drury at 3:53 of the second. Then the fights started, a linesman took a skate to the face but the Rangers and Valiquette kept their focus and got the win.
- Rangers 5, Canadiens 3: Fans who tired of FOX's marathon Super Bowl pregame show may have migrated to NBC to catch this inspired effort by the Rangers. Playing in Montreal -- did any of them get to watch the Super Bowl, or even want to watch? -- the Blueshirts scored five unanswered goals after trailing, 3-0, early in the second period. Chris Drury had the go-ahead goal, and Scott Gomez, Michal Rozsival, Martin Straka and Brandon Dubinsky also scored. Coach Tom Renney, who has not had the most job security of late, described this as a character win. The Rangers sit at seventh place in the Eastern Conference, with 60 points. They trail the Flyers -- whom they dominated -- by only three points in their Atlantic Division.
But, it wasn’t just the top guys. Chris Drury had added two points and the defense held Pittsburgh to 18 shots. Henrik Lundqvist looked solid in net, coming up some big saves when he was finally tested in the third period.
Rangers 1 Devils 0 Overtime: This was one the Rangers needed to win and it showed. From the start of the game they played a smart, defensive style that gave New Jersey very few chances. It worked to perfection as the Devils only got 17 shots during the entire game, but the problem was the Rangers couldn’t score. Time and again Martin Brodeur stopped them and when the game went to overtime, it appeared likely...
Rangers 4 Philadelphia 3 (Shootout): The Rangers have overcome their slow start and moved into a tie for first place. Brendan Shanahan had a goal in regulation and the game-winner in the shootout to power New York. Henrik Lundqvist kept the Flyers off the board in the shootout, stopping all three shots he faced. Marc Staal played another solid game paired with Rozsival and Marek Malik has to be worried about regaining his starting spot....
Rangers 4, Devils 2: Given New Jersey's recent dominance over its cross-river rivals, Martin Brodeur's picking up his 500th win against Rangers would have seemed appropriate. Jaromir Jagr and Henrik Lunqvist had other ideas. Lundqvist stopped 22 shots and Jagr added a goal and an assist as the Rangers on the Prudential Center ice. Even defenseman Marc Staal got into the act. Jamie Langenbrunner had two goals for the home team, whose fans eagerly booed...
Rangers 4 Pittsburgh 2: That’s not a misprint, the Rangers really scored four goals tonight. Scott Gomez got things started for New York with a goal 7:35 into the game. But, Pittsburgh came right back and tied things on a Sergei Gonchar slap shot. But, Sean Avery did what he does best, get under opponents’ skin and he goaded Gary Roberts into a double minor. Roberts should know better and his mistake setup Michal Rozsival’s...
Rangers 2, Devils 1 (SO): Petr Prucha did enough to finally earn a second "E" for his name. He set up the only goal in regulation and scored the only goal in the shootout. Scott Gomez struck against his former club. The Rangers had other chances, including Chris Drury's breakaway in overtime, so this win helped them sleep better at night. Islands 3, Penguins 2: This could have been a Pyhrric victory. Rick DiPietro got...
Of course, the other story in this game was Scott Gomez's first appearance against the Devils. At least he got to play a home game. The Devils finished their nine-game season-opening road trip 3-5-1 and will open their new arena in Newark on Saturday.
Maybe it will take some time for this Rangers team to click. They have so many playmakers that they may need time to adjust to sharing the ice with such talent. That's a good problem to have, and given the lack of urgency directed toward the regular season, the Rangers have some time to figure it out.
