[UPDATE BELOW: The driver's neighbor writes us in his defense.] A delivery worker, described by police as a 41-year-old Asian man, was killed last night in Greenpoint when a driver in a Buick struck him from behind as he waited at a stop sign. The accident occurred around 7 p.m. at the sleepy intersection of Leonard Street and Meserole Avenue, and witness Sheryl Yvette tells us the driver also hit a livery cab minivan at the intersection. In an email, she describes the horrible scene:

Opera Singer Salvatore Licitra Dies After Scooter Accident
Tenor singer Salvatore Licitra, who made a splash at the Metropolitan Opera by filling in for Luciano Pavarotti, has died in Italy following a severe motorscooter accident last month. The death was announced on Licitra's website, which said that Licitra has been in a coma since sustaining severe head and chest injuries during an August 27th accident in Sicily. He was 43.
Cop Rides Subway Scooter On Subway Shuttle
Did you think that the NYPD would keep those T3 electric standup scooters' roaming restricted to subway stations alone? A subway rider saw one on the shuttle train between Times Square and Grand Central, prompting a reaction that surely spanned the range from "What the!" to "Well, at least he's not parked in the bike lane."
NYPD Keeps Adding Silly Subway Scooters
If you've been in one of our major train stations in the past few months you've probably seen them and thought "WTF?" Y'know what we're talking about: police officers in bike helmets riding souped-up three-wheeled scooters in circles. Does it it help that nobody really seems to have a good argument for the mall cop-style transports, called T3 electric standup vehicles? No? Oh well. The NYPD is now the proud owner of 29 of them.
Crime Solved! Police Return Scooter To Octogenarian
Yesterday, it was reported that dastardly thieves stole a handicapped octogenarian's scooter outside a church on the Upper East Side. However, unlike just about every other theft story we hear about, this one has a happy ending: police were able to track down and return the mechanized wheelchair. And it may have all been a big mix-up!
Thieves Steal Octogenarian's Scooter Outside Church
If you're going to hell, you might as well steal an 86-year-old woman's motorized wheelchair that's parked outside a church, right? Because that's what happened on the Upper East Side yesterday morning. Ellie Krach only got her $1,000 red scooter a week ago and while she was visiting her minister at the Jan Hus Presbyterian Church on E. 74th St, the thieves swooped in and took the scooter.
NYPD Transit Cops Get New Wheels—T3 Scooters!
The NYPD is rolling out new electric scooters for the Transit Bureau. Some of you may have already seen some transit cops on the T3 elective standup vehicle—the Daily News reports that the transit bureau now has four of the scooters "at major underground subway complexes.... Previously [the scooters have only been] used primarily to patrol parks, boardwalks and stadiums." Why bring them to subway stations? Well, cops will be perched higher than the crowds—not quite a 10-foot cop, but maybe a 7-foot-cop?
Couple on Vespa Chase Down Crook
A Carroll Gardens woman said a couple on a motorized scooter saved her cell phone from the hands of a thief last week. The victim said she was walking her dog while talking on her cell phone on the evening of August 10th. As she bent to pick up her dog's "business," a 13-year-old and his accomplice rushed up and snatched the phone from her hand. But like lightning, a couple on a Vespa swooped in and chased the kids to Union Street, where the woman jumped off, grabbed the phone, and jumped back on to ride away. Cops arrested the teen and the phone was returned. All in a day's work for the Brooklyn Vespers!
Fort Greene Woman's Vespa Was "Pride and Joy"
Police have identified the victim of yesterday's deadly collision as Aileen McKay-Dalton, 40, mother of three. One neighbor said her powder blue Vespa was her "pride and joy, after her children, " and her husband, Michael Dalton, said, "She was everything. It's just so horrible, I can't even talk." Both McKay-Dalton and the SUV driver were taken to Woodhill Hospital following the crash, where McKay-Dalton was pronounced dead and the SUV driver was treated for chest pains. Though witnesses say it was the SUV that ran the red light, a Police investigation has yet to officially confirm that. However, they have determined that the SUV is registered with the Treasury Department.
Deliveryman Remains In Critical Condition After Friday Crash
On Friday night, at the 7th Avenue and 51st Street intersection in Sunset Park, a Chinese restaurant deliveryman on a scooter collided head-on with an FDNY cruiser—a witness said Lin Chen, 36, was bleeding so much he looked dead (the photo is dramatic). Today, the Daily News reports that Chen remains in the ICU at Lutheran Medical Center. According to News and Post, FDNY EMS Deputy Chief Brian Milzoff will not be charged. Milzoff, whose lights and sirens were on (according to EMS sources that spoke to the News) had been responding to a call about a stabbing which later turned out to be false. The Post adds, "Witnesses wondered why Milzoff didn't get out to help the victim, but EMS sources said he was actually pinned in his car," and tests showed Milzoff was not drunk. Meanwhile, relatives are hoping the best for Lin, the married father of two young children; his nephew said, "Everyone feels bad, like sick. It's very hard."
