It's the first day of the Lunar New Year and, for the third year in a row, two lawmakers have asked Mayor Bloomberg to make Lunar New Year a school holiday. State Senator Daniel Squadron and Assemblywoman Grace Meng are behind the push, and Squadron says, "One out of every six New York City school students is Asian American, and today they have to choose between observing it with their families and community or going to school."

Should Lunar New Year Be A NYC School Holiday?
For a third year in a row, NY State Assemblywoman Grace Meng (D-Queens) held a rally to make the Lunar New Year a school holiday in NYC and other parts of NY State. According to the Daily News, "Meng has introduced bills calling for schools to observe the holiday in all cities in the state with more than 1 million residents, at least 7.5% of them Asian. She has also written to the mayor's office and the city Education Department."

The Sun reports Mayor Bloomberg doesn't think Muslim holy days should become school holidays. His reason? "The truth of the matter is we need more children in school. More, not less."
