Scarlett Johansson to Star in A View From the Bridge

Scarlett Johansson will make her Broadway debut in Arthur Miller's classic tragedy A View from the Bridge—not in Neil Simon's musical Promises, Promises (as previously rumored). Her co-star will be kick-ass actor Liev Schreiber, who'll play Eddie Carbone, a Brooklyn longshoreman obsessed with his 17-year-old niece Catherine, played by Scar-Jo. We can't foresee Schreiber having any trouble making that role convincing, but will the smoldering, soft-spoken starlet be able to translate her cinematic heat to the stage? More importantly, what will she be wearing? And if she's playing a 17-year-old, is it wrong to drool during the performance? (If so, we're in big trouble over Ghost World.)

Last week's season premiere of Saturday Night Live may have had America's Most Overhyped Sexpot Megan Fox as host, but this week's second episode ended up being the true Ladies Night, with divas in full force. Host Ryan Reynolds did that thing you do when your spouse is an even bigger star than you and brought along his wife (and soon-to-be Broadway actress) Scarlett Johansson, who reprised her role as a local saleswoman pitching "Chandeliers!" for dad Fred Armisen's Long Island business, that has now apparently expanded to porcelain fountains.

Will ScarJo Leave Her Mark on Broadway?

Actress, singer and Mrs. Ryan Reynolds, Scarlett Johansson has somehow made her way to Broadway. Nylon has the scoop, saying she’ll star opposite Sean Hayes (from Will & Grace) in the Neil Simon musical “Promises Promises.” They note "The play tells the story of an ambitious ’60s office guy who rents out his apartment to company bigwigs who want to have quickie affairs during the day. It’s kinda like Mad Men with a pop vocal score." Or, you know, The Apartment with a pop vocal score.

Last night was the star-studded, couture-clad Costume Institute Gala at the Met; the theme was "superheroes," to accompany the museum's latest Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy exhibit. J. Lo commented on her own superhero ensemble, saying, "the only thing I could think of was Wonder Woman with my cuffs."

The New York Rangers Sean Avery was released from the hospital yesterday, just in time to attend the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute Gala tonight! He'll be there as a guest of Vogue, where he is set to begin an editorial internship this week.

Another Will Ferrell sports flick will inflate this weekend, capping off a nationwide “Funny or Die” promotional tour that brought him to Radio City Music Hall Sunday night. The movie is Semi-Pro, which stars Ferrell as Jackie Moon, owner of the 1976 Flint Michigan Tropics, a team in the maverick ABA basketball league. To keep his career alive against all odds, Moon initiates off a series of increasingly desperate publicity stunts to attract fans – behavior that does sound awfully familiar.

Hallmark isn't the only one capitalizing on the L-word today, Hollywood has a stake in your heart as well -- invading the big screen with yet another Valentine's Day release. This time Little Miss Sunshine, Abigail Breslin, and soon-to-be Mr. Scarlett Johansson (?), Ryan Reynolds, team up for a tour de force of l-o-v-e in Definitely, Maybe (a nod to Oasis's debut album?).

Just in time for Super Tuesday, a bunch of big and small names have banded together in support of Barack Obama. The below video was directed by Jesse (son of Bob) Dylan and features the Black Eyed Peas will.i.am, Scarlett Johansson, "Micheal" from Lost, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Herbie Hancock, and many more putting a musical spin of one of Obama's speeches.

ART: The Bronx Museum of Art is getting on board the First Friday bandwagon. They'll be opening their doors every first Friday of the month for free, and add a little something extra each time. Tonight their theme is “Say it Loud! I’m Black & I’m Proud” in celebration of Black History Month. There will be a tribute to the late James Brown, and a showcase of independent artists paying tribute to black music.

Stars of stage and screen will be rearing their boldface names on April 9th to blow out 443 candles for the boldest face of all: Billy Shakespeare. Broadway’s Michael Cerveris (Sweeney Todd), Debra Messing (Will & Grace), the esteemed Philip Bosco (Copenhagen) and other notables will perform scenes from the Bard’s plays at The Shakespeare Birthday Marathon at Hunter College’s Kaye Playhouse. But perhaps the most anticipated star at this free event is TV’s Rainn Wilson – who embodies the obsessive Dwight Schrute in The Office – as he unleashes of his Shakespearean side. (Safety goggles recommended.) Details.

Fashion and music sometimes go hand in hand (for better or worse), and under the tents at Bryant Park, this doesn't change. Two years ago we found ourselves sitting front row at Cynthia Rowley's show, and as the models started to filter out - The Secret Machines "Nowhere Again" blasted in the air. It fit.

Dear lord, it's only mid-September but already the amount of new releases flooding theaters is getting a bit overwhelming.

Can you think of a better way to spend part of the potentially crazy-humid next couple of days than with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in sweaty Miami? Michael Mann brings his '80s TV staple into the present with , the newest installment in the ever popular teensploitation genre.

Looks like Senor Swanky's is trying to fool some tourists into checking out their restaurant. If you search for La Esquina on Citysearch (the taco bar on Lafayette with the secret basement room frequented by Scarlett Johansson and Josh Harnett), Senor Swanky's ad comes up on the bottom of the page. Swanky's is known for many things (drunken frat boys propositioning ladies on Laguardia Street, for instance), but celebrity sightings definitely isn't one of them.

Gothamist thinks a lot about what Brooklyn still needs- a really great grocery store, better dry cleaners, a safer G train. But we never knew Williamsburg was craving a piano bar.

The Hollywood Reporter is running a series of articles about how great New York is for film and TV production. One of them, Location report: New York, gives us some interesting information: "The original "L&O" has contributed more than $650 million to the city during 672 weeks of regular production spanning nearly 15 years." Wow! And that's just ONE of the Law & Order shows. Katherine Oliver, the Film, Theatre and Broadcasting Commissioner, says that L&O is a "repeat customer" coming into for permits "every single day." Commissioner Oliver will also help out films that are shooting entirely in the city: "[Stay, an Ewan MacGregor-Naomi Watts film] was a $50 million-budgeted film, and they shot the entire film in New York City," New York film commissioner Katherine Oliver says. "We diverted Manhattan-bound traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge for 10 nights; this is not something easy to do, but the message was that if you're going to spend that kind of money, do the entire project here and employ New Yorkers, we will give you the Brooklyn Bridge." There are you go: You get the Brooklyn Bridge for 10 nights, at a cost of $50 million.

In an effort to thwart the still-in-development gay cable channel, Bravo continues to make stridest to be the gayest network on TV. No, not by airing America's Top Model or Sex and the City or Melrose Place in syndication - by signing Ross Matthews, Tonight Show intern, to his own show, "The Ross Show!," silly! Gothamist loves how Ross says "THE ROSS SHOW! is going to be the most fun ever. Are you ready? I am!" and lets you write into him to see if he can make your dreams come true. The show will made up of bits like his Tonight Show work (which is hysterical - see him call Scarlett Johansson a bitch) and out-of-the-ordinary situations. He's like a nicer Cojo, who is just male Joan Rivers. Expect to see Ross on the Today show stat.
