Let's cut to the chase here: if this cat isn't adopted by December 26th, the current owners are going to euthanize her, making it the saddest Boxing Day ever. So let's save her!
Let's Save Sumi The Cat This Christmas!
Yankees' Mariano Rivera Makes Record-Breaking 602nd Save
Mariano Rivera was always going to go down in history as one of baseball's best closers, but now he has the most saves ever after ensuring the Yankees' 6-4 win over the Twins today. The Daily News' Anthony McCarron said after the last out, the team went to the field, "Mo is hugging everyone. then they are gone and Mo is left on the mound and crowd goes wild." Aww!
To Do: Save This Puppy!
This winter the Brooklyn Animal Foster Network was overwhelmed after rescuing more dogs than normal during the season (Penelope wasn't the only one left in the snow), including six puppies pulled from "a damp, cramped, feces-covered cellar." Bryn (pictured) is a 4-month-old pup that they rescued, but she's now on life support with double pneumonia, racking up more unexpected expenses for the shelter. They write:
One Puppy Gets Home, Many More Need Saving
After her mug made the rounds on the internet yesterday, a lot of homes were offered to the half-frozen dog found tied to the Williamsburg Bridge (she's like the Ted Williams of canines!). Now one of the people responsible for saving him, Nick at Scouting NY, reports that he dropped the little lady off to her new home last night.
NYPD Saves Dog In The Ice-Cold Hudson
Some of New York's Finest took their own polar bear plunge in the Hudson River today in an effort to save a dog that had fallen in. The 4-year-old German Shepherd jumped from its home, a three-bedroom catamaran docked at Chelsea Piers, where it lives with its humans and another dog. According to the NY Post, Chloe the dog was stuck under the dock at Chelsea Piers Marina, near the driving range, at around 10:30 this morning. Turns out Chloe had jumped ship and was in the water for 30 minutes before her owner Mark Stoss spotted her (he was at court beating a dog-walking ticket!). He told the paper, "[I thought] that sounds like my dog. I looked everywhere and I couldn’t see her, finally I looked in the water and she was stuck under the dock. I started screaming ‘Call 911! Call 911!’"
Army Medic Saves Choking Lady At Yankees Game
At yesterday's Yankees game, a "prominent Bronx rabbi's wife [was] choking on a piece of kosher London broil," according to the Daily News. Army medic John Stone, 15 rows away, went over when he saw the commotion and performed the Heimlich maneuver, "I stepped behind her, gave her about five or six abdominal thrusts and eventually she coughed up whatever she was choking on." Just in time—a police source said that Toby Weiss was "panicking" and about to "pass out." Stone, who served in Iraq and got high fives from fellow spectators, got a seat upgrade to right behind home plate when the Yankees heard about his save, "It was incredible. They have the utmost class." And here's how to do the Heimlich.
Wall Street Brokers Hold Political Rally to Save Status Quo
An outraged group of Wall Street brokers are finally fed up with feeling the government's oppressive boot on their necks, and they're getting organized to fight for their rights. Yesterday over two dozen brokers and traders held a rally to announce their new organization, Restore Wall Street, which is devoted to "bringing the pride back into Wall Street." You've got it all, Wall! Can a Fun Run be far behind? The rally/publicity stunt was held during lunch on the 23rd floor of 14 Wall Street, because, as one executive simply put it, "It’s cold out."
Outrage Mounts Over TGI Friday's Coming To Union Square
Yesterday we got a press release announcing the imminent arrival of TGI Friday's in Union Square and thought, ho-hum, so it goes. Others were less complacent, and have vowed to thwart the militantly upbeat chain's plan to push Jalapeño Poppers by the historic old potter's field. These dissidents are fighting by any means necessary, including Twitter. The group Save Union Square says "follow us and help send a loud and clear message to The Riese Organization that we don't want their TGI Friday's. SAVE THE SQUARE!" Because if a corporate chain opens across the street from Union Square, it will be ruined—just like it is every morning when Babies R Us, Staples, Starbucks, Petco, DSW, Best Buy and Barnes & Noble fling open their doors. But if the Twitter account proves unable stop this suburban abomination, the Friday's will open in the space formerly occupied by Zen Palate, at a time of their choosing. And just to piss off everyone even more, the Riese Organization will also include a Tim Hortons in the same building, so opponents can wash down their rage with some weak Canadian coffee. But hey, at least TGI Friday got its start in NYC.
With Rivera's Save, American League Wins 13th All Star Game In A Row
Last night in St. Louis, the American League won its 13th MLB All Star game in a row, giving the AL team that makes it to the World Series home field advantage. Mariano Rivera closed the game (video); the Daily News reports this is his fourth All Star save, "moving him past Dennis Eckersley for the most in history," leading Rivera's teammate and fellow All Star Derek Jeter to say, "It's just another thing he can put on his Hall of Fame plaque, I guess."
Celebs and Locals Rally Around the NYPL
No one will shush you for trying to save the New York Public Library from drastic budget cuts. In fact, they're asking for you to Shout It Out on their behalf. Stand up and support your local branch—and if you need some convincing, here's Bette Midler, Jeff Daniels, Barbara Walters, Tim Gunn, Amy Tan, Malcolm Gladwell, Nora Ephron, Mike Nichols, Mario Batali and many more talking about why the library has been so important to them.
Global Warming and Bad Harvests Raise Cost of Beer
First devastating weather patterns and destroyed coral reefs, then lousy harvests and global food shortages, now this: soaring beer prices. In an increasingly warmer world, precious, life-sustaining beer is becoming a luxury item. The past year has seen a drought in Australia, flooding in Germany, hailstorms in the Pacific Northwest, and lower crop yields throughout Europe – all resulting in a dramatic spike in the cost of grains and hops.
