Yesterday, Dimitri Sheinman, a former Inwood resident, was convicted of assaulting a man - and his dog - while in Inwood Hill Park. Usually a story like this wouldn't be newsworthy, but Sheinman has actually been the "number 1" suspect in the May 2004 murder of Juilliard student Sarah Fox since December 2004. Fox's body was found in the Inwood Hill Park after she had been jogging, and her death sparked an massive police search of the area that came up short. The NY Times has a more in-depth look at the two cases. During the 2005 assault, Sheinman claims that Rene Perez's dog jumped on his wife's pregnant belly and his young daughter's stroller; Perez says that Sheinman the kicked the dog away. Sheinman then proceeded to punch Perez when Perez called him a criminal. That's a good move - to be publicly known as the number one suspect in a murder and to beat people up. Then again the DA's office never charged him, because there wasn't enough evidence.

A woman was attacked in Inwood Park as she jogged on Sunday morning. The Post reports that the attack occured "not far" from where the body of 21 year old student Sarah Fox was found in May 2004. The woman had been jogging at 8:30AM, at 217th and Seaman Avenue, when a man "grabbed her around the neck from behind and rubbed something that smelled like Vicks Vap-o-Rub into her eyes." After a struggle, the woman cried and another jogger came by, which made the attacker run away. The Post points out this runner was wearing headphones, as Fox had, and neighborhood women say they never go into the park alone. If you jog, have a jogging buddy or jog where there are others around. It is hard when you live a little further out, but be safe - here's a Google search of "jogging safety tips."

Morales raped a woman in the park in a tunnel around West 115th Street in 1986 and was sent to jail for 16 years, emerging in 2003 having finished two-thirds of his sentence. Police are investigating whether or not Morales may be connected to other crimes in the area, including being questioned about the murder of Juilliard student Sarah Fox (the police doubt he was involved the Fox murder).

Meanwhile, doctors at Bellevue are calling Meadows the "miracle model" because the bullet narrowly missed internal organs, when it entered her left shoulder, near the armpit. The shooting has also sparked the interest of different theater companies in the city, who are interested in offering Meadows work. Really? Oh, dear, Gothamist worries that other would-be starlets don't stage stunts like this (we just hope that they stick to embarrassing themselves on reality shows). But other actors are worried about their safety, given this shooting and the murder of Sarah Fox. Hey, thesps, join the crowd! Terrible things can happen to anyone. But, the notion of self-centered actors does make us think Gawker might be onto something, when suggesting that Meadows gets a shout-out on Tony night.

The Daily News also mentions that Inwood area residents are planning to meet about safety issues tonight, at Church of the Good Shepherd on Isham Street, 7PM.

The Daily News speaks with a woman who had been attacked in Inwood Park last year. Both the Daily News and Times paint a picture of the park area near the Henry Hudson bridge, where Fox's body was found (one young woman tells the DN, "My roommate's buying some Mace for me today. This is making me think a lot harder about coming in here alone."; a 57 year-old woman tells the Times, "I put it this way: I don't let my husband up there by himself.").

The medical Examiner's office confirmed that the body found in Inwood Park was Sarah Fox's, the 21 year-old drama student who had been missing since last Wednesday. The ME's office also ruled that it was a strangulation, and the police are treating it as a homicide. Police are not sure if Fox knew her attacker or not, but remarked that the body was found with leaves and branches from a tulip poplar tree, leading them to consider that it was a ritualistic killing. They are also reviewing video surveillance cameras from area stores and checking local sexual offenders, as well as reinterviewing friends and family. Today, many newspapers focus on how Fox was beloved by those who knew her and seemed poised for a promising career on stage. While the circumstances are different, it sadly reminds Gothamist another young, aspiring actress whose life was cut short: Lyric Benson, whose ex-boyfriend killed her in a murder-suicide.

The body was found by one of the hundred volunteers, friends and family members of Fox's, some who traveled from New Jersey to try to help find her. Fox's neighbor called the wooded area where the body was found somewhere "[n]o one would go...at least not of their own volition."
