The public relations executive accused of brutally stabbing his girlfriend in their Lower East Side apartment last month was arraigned on murder charges yesterday. According to court papers, Raul Barrera, 33, told the police, "We were fighting over a butcher knife. I hit her in the back. There's a lot of blood... She is bad and that's why I'm here to turn myself in."

In the wake of the death of Sarah Coit, three New York State legislators are again pushing forward with a bill that would create a Domestic Violence Offender Database. Though the idea of creating a domestic abuse registry similar to the one already extant for child abusers has been around for a while, the death of 23-year-old Coit allegedly at the hands of Raul Barrera (who had multiple previous instances of abuse on the record), is being used by State Senator Eric Adams (D-Brooklyn), Assemblywoman Vanessa Gibson (D-Bronx), and Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries (D-Brooklyn) to help move the law forward. A similar bill didn't cut it in the Ledge last year.

As family and friends mourned Sarah Coit, the 23-year-old who was stabbed to death over the weekend, more people came forward with stories about Raul Barrera, the man who allegedly confessed to killing Coit in their Lower East Side apartment. Barrera's father, who convinced him to turn himself in, gave his sympathy to the Coit family and spoke about his son: "He's a good person. I'm sure it was the passion in the moment...If I could see [the Coit's] in person, I'd tell them my heart goes out to them," Raul Barrera Sr. told the Post.

Early Sunday morning, police found a 23-year-old woman who suffered numerous stab wounds—her head was allegedly nearly decapitated—in her Lower East Side apartment at 63 Clinton Street. Police say that Sarah Coit's boyfriend, Raul Barrera, confessed to the brutal crime, and a person who heard Coit's screams told the Post, "My friend who lives here told me this has been going on for a while. They've been fighting like that for months."
Boyfriend Allegedly Confesses To Nearly Decapitating Woman
Police have arrested a LES man who allegedly confessed to stabbing his girlfriend to death this morning. Raul Barrera was charged with the murder of Sarah Coit early this morning in their apartment at 63 Clinton Street. Coit was allegedly trying to break up with him at the time. And neighbors say they could hear Coit screaming for help. "She was yelling ‘No, no, stop, stop, don’t hurt me!’...The cops were yelling, ‘Don’t look, don’t look!’ Her head was almost off, her neck was wide open," said Brianna Andalore, who was staying with a friend in the building.
