  • We got ourselves a note in the inbox from the folks who run the Big Apple BBQ to let us know that Bubba FastPasses are currently on sale from now till May 25 for the June 9 & 10 event. Gothamist was all over this event last year; look for more great coverage and photos coming up soon. This year should provide a bit of a pre-show glimpse of what local pitmaster Robbie Richter has in store for his new spot Hill Country - a place that should have you very excited. Hit the site to review other pitmasters participating as well as the impressive panelists for seminar series.
  • Reading on Grub Street about Cones ice cream and one patron's fight to get Dulce de Leche con Brownie stocked as a regular flavor prompted a pop-in. After spotting the flavor and knowing we needed to order it to see what it was all about, we blew our test tries on corn (not good, very different from Claudia Fleming's seminal version) and pistachio (have you had Ronnybrook ?). Walking home we reflected back that this was probably not the best ice cream we have had and was not even up to snuff with Peanut Butter Ripple the ole' Shake Shack had earlier in the weekend.
  • Congratulations to Ganda, who recently grabbed Ed Levine for her “You Are What You Eat” column, on her inclusion on a food blogging panel this Fall for the Gourmet Institute. With a wide variety of panels full of heavy hitter chefs and food personalities, this is a great opportunity for a fantastic food blogger.

CBS 2 News did a bit of an unexpected midweek transition to HD news yesterday becoming the third station in the city and the second CBS owned and operated station in the country to do so after KYW in Philadelphia went HD last week.

It's time go over this weekend's NY Times Weddings Announcements!

Yesterday we mentioned that Governor Pataki was having, er, difficulties after his appendectomy last week. We just wanted to share with the Governor's staff a new study from the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California. Apparently chewing gum after intestinal surgery can help get one's bowels moving and can get them home from the hospital sooner. After any abdominal surgery, especially one in which the bowels are disturbed, the intestines can slow down or simply stop moving, a condition known as paralytic ileus. The study, published in the Archives of Surgery, shows that chewing gum three times a day could stimulate nerves and release hormones that can get the pipes moving again. Maybe the Governor can get some gum and then get back to work.

For such a long and storied crosstown street, it is odd that Bleecker Street on has only one subway stop. That stop on the 6 train will drop you square into NoHo, providing easy access to that neighborhood as well as the East Village and NoLita.

When [Cold Mountain producer Albert] Berger referred to Paramount's distribution of ELECTION, which Berger and six others produced (or exec produced), Bart said ELECTION was one of the worst marketed films ever. "But Paramount did produce it," Berger said, to which Bart replied, "Accidents happen."

The whole Michael Jackson insanity is neverending. Who would have thought that the day would come when Jackson's lawyers would be working with the police to arrange for his surrender? Sadly, the multiple counts of child molestation are not so much a surprise as the request for $3 million bail. Fox News' Roger Friedman has sources who tell him the accuser is a cancer patient, whose apparent "last wish" was to meet Jackson: "Jackson paid the familys medical bills and assisted them financially, even buying them a car and, according to sources, possibly a new house." This is where there backlash against the molestation claims emerges - many people are confused and aghast that parents could knowingly let their children near Michael Jackson, and therefore the accusations seem more like a shakedown for a settlement. However, the lack of a civil suit that angle somewhat less likely, and it would seem that Santa Barbara authorities have a case, and The Sun implies that District Attorney Thomas Sneddon has a vendetta against Jackson, ever since the 1993 accusations by another young boy who later settled.
Of course Gawker revealed the ABC News memo that signaled a shift in news focus from world issues to Michael Jackson Watch, and Variety confirmed that the news divisions are scampering for viewers with Michael-centric shows, from NBC's Friday Dateline about MJ to whatever VH1 has cooked up. And the Hollywood Reporter profiles Court TV's Diane Dimond who managed broke the story first; she says she's been "covering this story for 10 years."
