The big sports news of the day isn't the Super Bowl. It's the probable Johan Santana trade that the Mets and Twins agreed to yesterday. And from the reaction of the local papers and sportswriters, it seems like the Mets pulled a fast one on the rubes from Minnesota. If the Mets can sign Santana to a contract extension, it's likely that he will become the highest paid pitcher in baseball, surpassing Barry Zito of the San Francisco Giants. It's believed that Santana and his agent Peter Greenberg are looking for a 6 or 7-year deal in the range of $20-25 million per year.

Mets fans are tired this morning, but they are happy. Four late nights watching the Mets play Arizona paid off as the Mets swept the four games and scored thirty-nine runs in the process. Thursday night the bats took a break, but the pitching was great in the Mets’ 3-1 victory.

In the first inning, Barry Bonds, the aforementioned huge-headed slugger hit a two run homer to put the Giants on top. The Giants and Mets could have saved everyone about two hours and called it a game. The Mets went on to only score one run despite getting eight hits, one more than the Giants had.

The Mets won their season-high fourth straight game last night, defeating the San Francisco Giants, 2-1 in 11 innings (box score). It was their first series sweep of the season and moved them to 13-15, two games below .500 and - shh...don't tell them - three games out of first in the sorry NL East. The victory came on a game-winning home run by Mike Piazza, who just set the home run record for catchers on Wednesday. Before Piazza's dramatics in the bottom of the 11th, ultra-slugger Barry Bonds was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs, but David Weathers pitched himself out of the situation.

Last night, Mike Piazza hit his 352nd home run as a catcher, breaking the all-time record for the position, previously held by Carlton Fisk. The 405-foot shot to right-center came on a 3-1 pitch in the first inning off of Jerome Williams of the San Francisco Giants. Many in attendance at Shea thought they would see Barry Bonds at the plate, but they got a record setting performance by the greatest offensive catcher in baseball. Piazza tied the record last week against the Dodgers and has five home runs this season. After the game, Piazza was rightfully proud of his accomplishment:
"It's something I'm very proud of. The only reason it holds a little more significance is because of the physical demands of the position. To do that, to hit that many home runs, number one, you have to be healthy and somewhat consistent. There's been some great catchers that have played this game … and I think that's the reason why I think it's a little more heralded."
Gothamist tips our cap to Mike Piazza, who has accomplished quite a feat. He might not be the best defensive catcher in the game, but there is little doubt that he is an offensive force. The Mets went on to win the game, 8-2 (box score), their 3rd straight. In Oakland, the Yankees won their 8th straight game, defeating the A's, 4-3 (box score).
