The juvenile humpback whale, caught in lobster netting and gear near the Ambrose Channel, off Sandy Hook, NJ, was freed yesterday by a rescue team (another photograph of the rescue is after the jump). However, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Teri Frady said, "It does have serious injuries, but it is much better off than being anchored in the shipping lane." The U.S. Coast Guard says that a 500-yard safety zone is being enforced around a humpback whale, which is "entangled in a lobster pot [and netting] and netting eight miles east of Sandy Hook near the approach to Ambrose Channel." The whale, which Newsday says is "a juvenile humpback, about 25 to 30 feet long," was seen on the surface and breathing.

Jeffrey's Hook Lighthouse, better known to many as the Little Red Lighthouse, is located right under the George Washington Bridge, in Fort Washington Park. And the Parks Department is having the 15th Annual Little Red Lighthouse Festival today between 12PM and 5PM, with hayrides, face painting, the antics of a stiltwalker, live music, and tours of Manhattan's only lighthouse.

The fuel tanker, the White Sea, that ran aground near the Ambrose Channel off Coney Island and Sandy Hook, NJ, yesterday morning, is still stuck in the waters. An attempt to dislodge the 800-foot ship carrying over half a million barrels of "low-sulfur fuel oil" failed last night, so the Coast Guard began plans to "lighten" (remove) 110,000 barrels of fuel after the ship couldn't be moved. Coast Guard officials are hopeful that it can be dislodged during tonight's high tide around 8PM.

WCBS 880 reports that an oil tanker, the White Sea, has run aground in the Ambrose Channel, which is a shipping channel south of Lower New York Bay, off Staten Island, Coney Island, Breezy Point and NJ's Sandy Hook. The Coast Guard says that there are no reports of injuries.

• City Councilman Charles Barron's chief of staff, Viola Plummer, was suspended for six weeks from the City Council and by Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who she's also heckled, with a promise of reinstatment if she promises to behave herself. Plummer is in her 70s, but threatened another Councilman with assassination on a contentious vote.
• A grand jury in a federal court case voted to indict four alleged plotters that wanted to blow up JFK airport, kill thousands, and cripple the U.S. economy with a harebrained scheme to take out a pipeline that runs towards the airport.
• "...the red, white and blue leader of the Avengers was felled by an assassin's bullet on the steps of a New York federal courthouse." Captain America got capped, by Marvel Comics no less.
• A 21-year-old White Plains worker at the Rye Playland Amusement Park was killed when thrown from a gyrating ride. Gabriela Garin had changed shifts with another ride operator and then got on the ride to make sure visitors were properly secured, when her replacement started the ride.
• The new rules against noise and trans-fats go into effect tomorrow. Somehow we feel that NYers will remain louder, skinnier, and better looking than the rest of the country, regardless of what laws are passed.
• The City has a list of all the designated grilling areas around the five boroughs. The Parks Dept. says "Designated Barbecuing Areas," but frankly, we don't want to get into all that right now.
• We've pretty much given up on listening to radio, but this blog may point us to something it's possible we'll want to hear. Thank you New York Radio Guide.
• The Staten Island Advance points out that Mayor Bloomberg's ambitious plan to make all yellow cabs hybrid in a few years overlooks the livery cabs that service the outer boroughs. Car service owners and drivers would prefer to keep it that way.

The Gateway National Recreation Area is a dual-state and tri-borough national park meant to showcase the Greater New York Harbor for all area residents. It includes the Sandy Hook peninsula of New Jersey that is the outer boundary of New York's Harbor, Long Island's Jamaica Bay that is a wildlife refuge, and Staten Island's parks that offer opportunities to visit historic forts and wildlife nature areas. All together, the group of parks is known as the Gateway National Recreation Area. A conservation organization is holding a public design competition for Gateway National Park.

Ooh, take a look at this pretty satellite image. It was taken last Monday by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer onboard the Terra satellite. You can see the sharp snow line from Sandy Hook, across the Rockaways, and out to Sunken Meadows State Park, left by the Valentine's Day storm. Central Park shows up as a snow covered playground, while four days after the storm the snow has disappeared from Midtown. Well, Gateway National Recreation Area is right in our neck of the woods, extending in three New York City boroughs and into northern New Jersey. It is a good place to start your quest for the perfect patch of sand and cooling waters.

Recently, everytime Gothamist says it is going to rain it hasn't rained. So it is with great trepidation that we say it is going to rain tonight. The rain has already made it to Sandy Hook, so maybe we'll get this one right. A classic nor'easter is coming up the coast this week. The rain should start soon and will be heavy overnight. You may hear some thunder. It is going to take a while for the cold air to arrive, so we won't see any snow in the city. When the cold air gets here tomorrow night it will do so on the back of a fierce wind. Get out the wind chill charts!
