Whether or not New York City gets hit with snow on Sunday and Monday is still up in the air (pun intended). As of now it looks like the snow is more likely to affect eastern New England, but there is still much uncertainty as to where the storm may form. What does seem certain is that it is going to get cold early next week. If you're like Gothamist and plan to travel to traditional lake effect snow areas like upstate New York or eastern Ohio the cold air is going to ensure a white Christmas.
Still Don't Know About the Snow
Things may get Interesting
That was a nice little cold spell, don't you think? Gothamist enjoyed having an amuse-bouche before winter's entrée is served. We'll get a brief respite today and tomorrow, when it should be sunny and slightly warmer than normal before cooling off for the weekend.
Stormy Vacillation
You know a cold front has passed by when your high temperature for the day is reached at 7:35 in the morning and the minimum is reached at midnight as was the case yesterday. We peaked at 38 degrees early yesterday morning and colder and colder air swept over us pretty much continuously until this morning. It will remain chilly and gloriously sunny today. Warm weather will return tomorrow and remain for a few days. The weather early next week could get interesting. We will most likely get more Arctic air. There's a good chance that a significant low pressure system will form over the Atlantic. Exactly where that storm will form, and whether we get snow, rain, or nothing, is unknown at this time. The Weather Service and AccuWeather are both hedging their bets, balancing dispassionate, responsible and professional forecasts with a weather geek's desire for a crapload of snow.
A Day of Sun
Sunshine! It is nice to see the sun today even if it heralds much colder air. An Arctic High will be exerting its meteorological hegemony over our weather for the rest of the week. The dominance will express itself with cold air and clear skies for the rest of today through Wednesday. It should get down to around 20 tonight. Gothamist began to feel solipsistically put upon by such cold weather until we realized it will be almost as cold as far south as Mobile, Alabama. Much warmer later in the week and maybe, just maybe in the sense that it is too early to tell, we may have a decent snowstorm early next week.
A Chill is in the Air
For your enjoyment Gothamist is warming up our forecasts this week with a return visit of artist and photographer Samarra Khaja's marvelous illustragraphs. You may remember Samarra's artwork from her contributions last May.
