You may not have noticed that the NHL season started last weekend. While two games between two California teams in London may not have captured your interest, the three local teams that begin play tomorrow and the next few nights will all be fascinating stories throughout the season.

Islanders 6, Capitals 2: Ryan Smyth scored on the power play in his Islanders debut, as his new team warmed up for two critical games against the Rangers this week with a convincing win. Unlike their rivals, the Islanders did not rest the starting goalkeeper. Rick DiPietro has now started 14 straight games.
Devils 1, Penguins 0: Martin Brodeur made good use of his day off and recorded a shutout -- his 12th this season -- on a day where the Devils decided to stay put at the trading deadline. With their talent, who would feel the need to make a move?

In a flash the Rangers remade their team on the first day of free agency, adding Chris Drury and Scott Gomez. Drury, grew up in Trumbull, Connecticut as a Rangers’ fan and has been one of the top centers in the game since breaking into the league with Colorado in 1998 (not to mention a Little League World Series champion). Gomez has been with the Devils since joining the league in 1999 winning two Stanley Cups and is a very good player at both ends of the ice.

- Yankees 5 White Sox 1:If the Yankees are going to get off the deck and get back into playoff contention, they will need a lot more nights like this. Chien-Ming Wang was brilliant, going the distance while allowing only one run and six baserunners. Wang also struck out four as he cruised to an easy win, his fifth of the season.
