When you're out at the ballpark this baseball season, keep in mind that it's not all fun and games when you're watching in the stands. That's what Ellen Massey found out during Opening Day at Shea Stadium on Monday. It wasn't a bat or ball that caused her injuries, but a man that fell on top of her while she was sitting in her upper deck seats. It happened between innings of the game as Massey and her nephews were discussing Ryan Howard's home run. They felt beer land on them and then Massey had the unfortunate luck of having the unidentified man land on her head and neck. One of Massey's nephews thinks that the man was drunk. There were no apologies by the other fan, as he just scurried away. For her troubles, Massey has a cracked vertebrae and is scheduled for surgery on Friday.

With their future stadium as the backdrop, the Mets took on the "team to beat in the NL East." Those were the words of Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins in January, words that he would eat in the Mets 11-5 win Monday afternoon. John Maine lacked control in his second start of the season, loading the bases in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings. Maine was removed after 4 2/3 innings of work. The Phillies left 9 runners on base in the game, but in the 6th inning Ryan Howard, the reigning NL MVP, hit his first home run of the season. The two-out, three-run home run came off Ambiorix Burgos, giving the Phillies a 5-3 lead.

-Phillies 4, Mets 3: Philadelphia's Ryan Howard helped snap the Mets' 11-game winning streak at home and seven-game winning streak. Mets starter Brian Bannister had a rough start, but he settled down after allowing all four Philadelphia runs. With the Phillies playing for the wild card, the Mets can laugh these losses off, but Bannister knows he won't find himself on a postseason roster without catching manager Willie Randolph's eye.

-Ryan Howard wins the Home Run Derby: For once, David Wright’s enthusiasm got the best of him. Not that Mets’ fans will complain, but Wright attacked the Home Run Derby the way he does everything else: full bore. The problem was, he didn’t pace himself and after hitting 16 dingers in Round One, he could only muster another six while Howard hit 17 in the first two rounds and then slammed five in the final for the victory. Of course, some speculate that the winner of the contest is cursed, so it is probably ok that Wright lost.

-Yankees 9 Ryan Howard 7: New York broke a three-game losing streak, but almost lost to Philadelphia thanks to the electric performance of Ryan Howard. Howard had two home runs and a triple, knocking in all seven of the Phillies’ runs. Howard ended the game 3 for 4 and only Mariano Rivera was able to get him out.
