A week and a half ago, three people, including two boys, were caught when a Bronx building's parapet collapsed on top of them. Hundreds of pounds of concrete fell from a building on Grand Concourse near 183rd Street; 10-year-old Damion Hope Rosa's left leg was partially severed, and doctors later amputated it below the knee.

Forget about the downtown hipsters, the real tastemakers (for the tourists, at least) are in Midtown. The concierges of the city make hundreds of recommendations a day, so it's only natural they get their own nights at restaurants like The Palm.

Bruni doubles up this week, visiting both Pera in midtown and Dennis Foy in Tribeca. Each restaurant receives one star and the summation that they're worth stopping by if you're in the neighborhood. At Pera, the grilled meats stand out, though Bruni warns, "Stray far from 'tradition' and you risk disappointment, or at least boredom." He likes Dennis Foy's "French-inflected" food, particularly the gnocchi and the crab tian. Calls the restaurant "a worthy but low-wattage addition to the New York dining scene."

- Restaurant Girl reports that Gary Robbins has jumped ship on the giant, long-listing cruse liner The Russian Tea Room.

  • Bruni had a busy day over at the Times today. He gave one star to omakase-only Sasabune, proclaiming that "with fish this fine," chef and owner Kenji Takahashi has every right to make his own rules. He also creates his perfect meal of 2006, comprised of dishes from various spots. It starts off with the grilled squid salad at Boqueria, winds its way through L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon and A Voce before landing at The Little Owl for the pork chop, and finishes at Blau Gans for dessert.
  • - Looks like the upcoming Whole Foods is not gonna let their proposed wine store go down without a fight. Gothamist ran into some petition signature collectors on the street in the EV over the weekend. Their pitch was for support of an all organic wine store on the same site as the new pricey grocery depot – separate entrance of course.

Bruni one-stars the recently reopened Russian Tea Room. He finds some of the food very appealing, some not so much. The kitchen is "bedeviled by inconsistency," he says. Also, he doesn’t love the caviar and hates the service.

Bruni joins the chorus of unenthusiastic reviews for Lonesome Dove Western Bistro, awarding it no stars. The best he has to say is that chef/owner Tim Love "seems dedicated to getting first-rate cuts of meat" (which the kitchen then overseasons).

Bruni three-stars L'Atelier Joel Robuchon. While "it hit the ground limping," he says, "it improved quickly and greatly, and your focus can now fall on its mostly exhilarating food." He also finds at L'Atelier a new contender for the city's best haute burger: made with Kobe beef, foie gras, caramelized peppers and brioche buns.
