- The experiment to have subway riders use their cell phones to pay for fares is ramping up. amNew York reports that one of the trial's sponsors, Citigroup, is looking for willing guinea pigs (suckers?) to participate. Here's how it works:

The three-to-six-month trial is limited to people who are both existing Citi MasterCard holders and Cingular Wireless subscribers. Interested riders need to sign-up at www.nyctrial.com by Dec. 21, Semenchuk said.

In Chelsea, the former home of Suede--which we always thought was pretty gay-- is going all the way with Release. Aaron Turner, who some of you may remember from such films you won't find on IMDB as Delicious, Small Town Girls and Coed Fever, has turned to promotion with the renovated space. And with him with be high-end djs, theme nights and probably a velevet rope or two.

Until we were twenty-three or so, New Year's Eve meant one thing: getting out-of-control drunk, vomiting in the streets, and passing out face-down on a table at some diner at 3am. Paaaaaaarty! If only we had access to this amazing post from Russian Blog, explaining how Russians manage to put away a couple of litres of Vodka and maintain verticality:

With the strike over and New Yorkers and out-of-towners in New York more mobile, we hear that stores are having some crazy sales today and tomrorow, in order to make up for strike days. Stores had to open later and close early, if they were able to open at all. The city projects a loss of $1 billion in revenue; according to Bloomberg (the news site, not the mayor, but on that topic, it's weird when Bloomberg LLP reports on Bloomberg the Mayor), losses included "$10 million a day because of overtime costs and $12 million in daily sales tax revenue." So, you may have tripped to shop during the strike - are you checking out great post-strike deals?

Everyone is trying to get to the bottom of David Gest's claims that Liza got stronger when she liquored up. Times reporter Michael Brick takes his assignment seriously and asks the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, a bartender at Russian Samovar, and a country singer in Brooklyn if vodka really can make someone super strong. Bartender Joseph Volovnik says, "It can make you fearless, not stronger. Why not stronger? Well, I'm just a bartender. I would say crazier." Gothamist loves this kind of journalism! And we must get back to the Russian Samovar soon.
