Of all of the many, many foods representative of New York City, perhaps none have remained so deeply tied to tradition than appetizings. Not appetizers, mind you—appetizings (noun), from an appetizing shop—things like smoked salmon, cream cheese spreads, and salads; or, as Wikipedia puts it, "the foods one eats with bagels." They arrived in New York with the huge wave of Jewish immigrants in the early 20th century, and owe their strange name to a kosher dietary law stating that meat and dairy can't be eaten or sold together. As a result, two different types of food stores cropped up: delicatessens (delis), which serve pickled, cured and smoked meats, and appetizings (appys), which handled the fish and dairy goods.

There Could Soon Be Two Russ & Daughters To Love!
Well, this could be a game changer for one developing neighborhood! Though a deal isn't finalized yet, the Wall Street Journal today reports that, after almost 100 years as a stand-alone store on the Lower East Side, appetizing legend Russ & Daughters may soon open a second location in the neighborhood north of Madison Square that developers keep insisting we call "NoMad." First that area gets Eataly (and the original Shake Shack), now this?

Spring Herringpalooza Coming Soon Enough
Herring are about to stage their own version of Spring Awakening. Schools of tiny fish (seen here) congregate this time every year in the slowly warming Nordic and Dutch waters, chill, and essentially OD on plankton. According to Edible Manhattan, it’s at this point herring undergo a major change akin to the freshman fifteen, with “their little oily bodies becoming up to 16 percent fat.” It’s also at this moment the fishing industries of several dozen countries go into maximum overdrive and start netting the hell out of the fish. In Holland, Flag Day is called Vlaggetjesdag; the holiday is celebrated by a lot of raw herring eating in the streets.
Seriously Eating New York
The folks at Serious Eats have launched the first of their city guides today, focusing on -- where else -- New York City. The guide is designed to highlight NYC's "essential eating experiences," and doesn't contain many surprises. You'll find quintessential New York icons like Russ & Daughters and Katz's Deli for "Best Old-School New York Landmark," Blue Ribbon for "Best Late Night Eats," and Blue Smoke, Hill Country and Daisy May's for "Best Barbecue," along with a list that should fill the bellies of many tourists. Visitors should take particular note of the list of eats under the category "Must Eat Before Leaving City," which includes the holy trinity -- a hot dog from Gray's Papaya, a slice of pizza from Di Fara, and a burger from the Shake Shack. Anything they missed? Not a whole lot of love for the outer boroughs, particularly Queens. . .
