Mystery Teen With Amnesia Searching For Her Family

A teenage girl has been taken in by the Administration for Children's Services after she was found wandering Times Square with near-total amnesia around midnight on October 9th. The girl, who is probably between 14 and 17, is 5-foot-6, medium build, light complexion, short, with straight blonde hair and blue eyes. She has pretty much zero recollection of her past, and has said, "I just want to know who I am. I want to know who I am, and what happened to me." But there are only a couple obscure clues to her identity.

Why Are Goats Roaming the Hutchinson Parkway?

Another goat has been found wandering around near the Hutchinson River Parkway in the Bronx, the third such incident this summer. City Room reports that the goat, a brown male Nubian believed to be about a month old, was at death's door with pneumonia when it was discovered on Tuesday wandering around a nursing home near where the parkway intersects with Interstate 95. Employees corralled the goat, and it was taken in by Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, N.Y., where it's still quite ill, but expected to survive. The location where the goat was found is not far from where two other goats were found wandering in late July. Richard Gentles at Animal Care & Control tells the Daily News that he doesn't know why the area is so popular with goats, but speculates that "someone owns them and are keeping them in their backyards." (That's illegal in New York City.) And Farm Sanctuary's director believes the Hutchinson River Parkway "has become something of an 'underground railroad' for goats looking to escape New York City's live markets with their lives."

Runaway Truck Miraculously Kills No One in Midtown

Yesterday morning a driver for an appliance company got out of his truck on East 50th Street without locking the air brake, sending the 24-foot box truck rolling east across Lexington Avenue. Fortunately, it crossed the avenue just as the traffic light turned green, then crashed into some construction scaffolding without injuring a single soul. Kirk, the 25-year-old driver who would only give the Daily News his first name, explalins, "I thought someone stole it. I was shocked to see no one in it when I opened the door." Bystander Tony Wood says the truck narrowly missed "a lady trying to cross the street but she stepped back." And subcontractor Alan Cheung tells the News, "I'm still shocked. This is my seventh cigarette this morning. I haven't been able to get in work mode since." (We'll have to remember that excuse.) Police did not charge Kirk, who insists he put the vehicle in park before jumping out. Regardless, it's hard to read about this harrowing incident without recalling the horrible crash in Chinatown in January, when a minivan jumped a curb, killing two children and injuring 17.

Missing St. John's Student Found

A 19-year-old St. John's student who had been missing since January 20 was reunited with her family yesterday. Erica Desai was last seen by a cousin who dropped her off at a dorm, and her family worried that something might have happened to her. A surveillance tape seemed to show a woman of Indian descent using her ATM card, raising questions whether she was missing or AWOL. Now, NY1 reports that Desai "called police late last night after seeing herself on television...Police say she was embarrassed about being expelled from school" for using someone else's credit card "...They also say she's been riding the trains for days." Desai initially told police she was abducted, but then admitted to running away.

In a desperate bid for freedom and to avoid a date with a butcher's knife, a goat made a break for it in the Bronx. The 25 pound pygmy goat was spotted yesterday afternoon on 141st St. near St. Ann Ave. in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx and police quickly captured it. A worker with Animal Care & Control believes that the animal probably escaped from a neighborhood slaughterhouse.

Georgia's been on a lot of people's minds since news of her disappearance became public in January, but she is now safe at home. The black cat escaped owner Ashley Phillips' pet carrier while they were waiting on the platform at 59th St. for a 6 train, on their way home from the Humane Society where Georgia had just been spayed. She survived 25 days in the subway tunnels before being found and rescued.

Queens DA Richard Brown announced an off-duty NYPD detective and his girlfriend were charged with promoting the prostitution of a 13-year-old Brooklyn runaway. Brown said, “This case is every parent and every child’s worst nightmare – made even more frightening by the fact that one of the defendants is a police officer who swore to uphold the law and protect the community he serves.”
